I finally bought into Dwarven Forge tiles. I've been thinking about buying them for a while now but their price was always intimidating. I've experimented with cheap alternatives to these Dungeons and Dragons tiles. However, the tactical map journey just leads me back to getting these for my DnD game.
Dwarven Forge Starter Set: amzn.to/38Oy76f
Dwarven Forge Website: dwarvenforge.com/
4-Pack Dry Erase Battle Maps with Tower Case: amzn.to/2T5d4We
D&D Dungeon Tiles Reincarnated
Wilderness: amzn.to/2SXh8Ig
City: amzn.to/2SZT3R2
Dungeon: amzn.to/2V91EDJ
If you are looking to start playing DnD I'd recommend this
Starter Set: amzn.to/2ZEQdE8
Don't forget dice: amzn.to/2SBaCZk
But if you are really serious I'd recommend you get these 3 books
Players Handbook: amzn.to/2SB0KPc
Monster Manual: amzn.to/37cmuEW
Dungeon Master's Guide: amzn.to/2SGmkl4
Or this bundle that comes with all 3: amzn.to/37jnB5W
If you wanna learn how to paint, I'd recommend this,
Reaper Mini Starter Paint Set: amzn.to/356H1JH

@@DwarvenForgeOfficial the problem is that, as good as they are, as much quality as you put into it, a starter set *literally* doesn't work for anything beyond a single room. Not all players are like the KZfaq guy here. People who can plunk down $500 to make a functional set. The wonder of D&D (or any TTRPG) is that there is a relatively low cost of entry. You hunt around on Amazon for a deal on a PHB/MM/DMG for around $75 then you get a battle mat and some markers for $30 and you're set for a few years. A lot of us are pretty poor. I've been trying to save money to have a surgery that I need to walk again for 3 years and that's only a few thousand dollars and after 3 years I can't afford it. Now imagine someone like me trying to justify $500 to make 3 rooms and a hallway. You've got to find a way to actually make these things reasonably priced unless you just want to market to the well-to-do crowd like this KZfaqr.

After years of 3D printing terrain for my game, I've found that impressiveness of variety outweighs the impressiveness of minute details on pieces. The number of quality 3D tiles available now is mind boggling. I have had to resort to keeping spread sheets of terrain. I'm not going to try to claim I know the cost comparison between dwarven forge and the scale of 3D printing that I do. I've spent enough on printers to have entire painted DF kickstarter complete sets. Factor in filament, paint, and man hours... But I have dozens of vastly different buildings, trees, scatter terrain, mountainous cliffs, caverns, dungeons, castle perimeter walls and draw bridge, roads, elven, dwarven, human, and demonic inspired architecture, sailing vessels that range from 2 ft long to row boats, and the capability to do anything I can imagine. Even with all my other pieces I have strongly considered buying select DF sets. Things like the waterfalls and trees are beautiful. I could never justify it to myself, though. As for the durability of prints, I've done similar tests to what I've seen from dwarven forge. From dropping them to throwing them at the ground to standing on them. They are difficult to destroy with tools. Delicate parts will definitely snap as they aren't as flexible as I imagine DF, however. At the end of the day, I think using both options is great if you supplement the shortcomings of one with the other.

I have an Elegoo Mars Pro 2 and just finished printing a bunch of minis. I'm debating about tiles / terrain though I've started getting my feet wet a bit. Would you consider sharing that spreadsheet you have? I'm on the hunt for tiles and such as I'm getting started with Lost Mines. Considering going and building all the terrain vs. getting the maps printed, but not sure yet...

Yeah, I'm sure the tiles are great if you have money, but I think a good 3D printer is a better investment. It's much more versatile and will be a LOT cheaper in the long run. Plus, 3D printed parts can be plenty strong. I've printed parts that didn't even have that much infill that could hold over 100 lbs.

I have a 3d printer with a dream to print terrain. Another advantage of dwarven forge over 3d printed aside from sturdiness is that you won't go insane trying to get to your printer to work!

I hear ya! I use a mix of both. Most set pieces I 3D print and paint, and I use tiles as the framework of the dungeon. Outdoor stuff and houses I just print as it's way cheaper than paying for DF landscapes. But for dungeon crawls and inside buildings? It's great!

I bought Dwarven Forge with my group way back in the early 2000s after playing with it in some games at Gencon. This was the classic resin stuff with the bow tie connectors and no magnets. I believe we bought the Room and Passage set and one of the Wicked Additions sets. The best thing was the whole group pitched in and split the cost of the sets and I recommend that to anyone who has a bunch of folks they play with on a regular basis. Sadly, we stopped using DF many years ago because it got to be too much of a pain for the DMs to set up and lug around to different houses. One of the DMs that had to stop playing has all the stuff at his place. We went back to just using battlemats and markers with tons and tons of minis right up until the health crisis.

In my opinion, Dwarvenforge has the most detailed, modular, and durable (dwarvenite) dungeon terrain money can buy. However, as the video states, they ARE expensive + if you have a lot of it then it can take up a lot of space, and set-up and take-down times can vary. I recommend looking into their kickstarters if you want to get them a little cheaper (I can't wait for Wildlands!). That being said, I personally agree with the video. They are highly worth it if you are looking into a long-term hobby of D&D. Bottom line: detailed/modular/durable vs $$/space/time. Is it a good investment for you? Only you can decide that.

Currently in process of etching out (just with a pen), cutting and painting some 5mm foam. It's easier then insulation foam. If you just buy the black sheets, you may even not want to paint !! The only problem I've encountered is what to back them onto, but that'll be either 3mm MDF which needs to be cut with a saw when I set up, or even cereal cardboard could be used double, triple layered !! Until one wins cross looootto or inherits a house. Can't justify the dollars no matter how good it looks !! I'd rather spend that money on a 32", or larger screen and play on a digital mat which can be customized and altered to any dungeon or landscape to suite the game, just the week or night before !!

Hey man I've recently got into D&D and started painting miniatures as well. And I find playing with minis and battle mats is great - cuz as you said playing only theatre of the mind especially during encounters is hard. Im eventually looking to invest in some dwarven forge soon myself. I needed some guidance in regards to playing with miniatures specifically. So I've managed to 3D print a few minis for PCs and painted them as well and they've turned out great. But I wanted to know when it comes to encounters do people use minis for monsters / enemies as well or do you'll use tokens or 2D minis? Because I found investing the money and time to make the minis for PCs was definitely worth it but to do the same for monsters that you might just probably end up using in a few encounters here and there wasn't worth the investment. So yea just wanted to know how others go about it.
@TonySticks

What I did was go on miniture market (the website) and ordered a bunch of the cheapest dnd minis. Like under a dollar each. And when I run an encounter I’m fairly lenient on the model. Like “hey players, I know this is a a giant turtle you are fighting, but I don’t have that, so this horse will represent the turtle” That was my start and I still do that to this day when I don’t have a very specific model

Dry erase / vinel battle maps are great butt!!! After 2-3 years they retain washable marker so ,"" solution "" if u get a peice of plexy glass at ur local hardware store or home depot or lowels ect...cut it to the size of ur table put the mat under this it never retains washable marker .. to cut it u use a skill saw a finish blade with lots of close carbide teeth wider about 1/8 inch wide carbide teeth for cutting wood . Wrap the spot u wanna cut with duck tape all the way around both sides of the plexy this prevents splintering or cracking, draw ur line that u wanna cut off at with a sharpie on the duck tape with a straight edge / ruler or a t squaure. After cutting the sheet remove excess duck tape off the plexy take some fine sand paper or a fine file and sand any light bur off the cut edge

Maybe when you stop belching throughout your video viewers will take you seriously.I was out after the second belch. Dwarven forge is great for people who have the extra 4 grand to purchase their full kickstarters but most adults in the real world cannot justify that sort of expense no matter how great they are. I REALLY like dwarven forge tiles but it's way too expensive. For half the price I can buy a top of the line 3d printer and make my own tiles in the exact quantity that I need for pennies a tile. Even at half the price Dwarven forge are too expensive.

i think getting it pre-painted is one of the main sellers. people spend time making money, and don't have time to paint, so might as well just buy the painted set. I did the math, and a single painted tile is like 4-5 bucks. So if you make around 9 bucks an hour, you probably consider your time more valuable than the time it takes to paint a tile.

In my opinion, no. They are too expensive which makes the buyer want to use them for every map, then all the maps look the same. I use paper maps. I find a good image in the internet, print it with a grid, then laminate. Our imagination does the rest.
@VegasDM
@VegasDM 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not following the logic of "all the maps look the same" and "i use paper maps". I would think all your maps look the same since they are paper while mine are 3-D since they are dwarven forge. Also doesn't printing and laminating cost money? that would get expensive over time. Either way I don't use my dwarven forge because they are expensive, I use them because they are 1.a joy to build with (this is an understatement) 2. fun to play D&D on and 3. look absolutely amazing on the table. I can relate to the video because I went down the rabbit hole of making tiles, buying the 2d tiles and the dry erase mess. My regret on this matter is that I did not get dwarven forge sooner

Regarding all the same: The tavern looks like gray stone with some building elements. The castle looks like gray stone with some castle elements. The forest looks like gray stone with some trees. The underdark looks like gray stones with some cave elements. Regarding paper and laminate expense: Our printer (not bought for role playing purposes) uses ink reservoirs, not cartridges, which makes color prints cheap. We also already had a laminater, and the sheets are not that expensive. Also, lamination is not necessary, its just what I do.

Any method is great as long as you are enjoying it. I prefer my DF tiles above all else, but I still use an occasional dry erase board and marker for lazy dungeon crawls. But the thing I love about the DF tiles is their flexibility. Dungeon cave crawl? Castle room? Tavern? Or just take the floor tiles and make a stone pathway on a green mat to represent grass. As long as you get creative, there are plenty of possibilities.

So you're not a builder. No, building doesn't take forever, once you know what you're doing.
