From the inspiration video for this, the earplugs they used were almost flush in the cartridge. That might influence both the accuracy, and the damage to the earplugs.

You could try it from relatively far away with no damage. Especially just with the primer. In a worst case scenario it would only leave a welt, probably not much of anything else.

I've heard that hot glue bullets work pretty well. You'd need a bullet mold of course (like a Lee four cavity one) to cast them.

We use these when teaching horses not to be scared of guns. But not in a semiautomatic we use revolvers because they are way more reliable when it comes to training bullets.

Tbf this makes sense on the amount of force being carried as force is still mass x acceleration and with the earplug being lighter than a standard bullet it still going at either the same speed, slower or faster makes sense on the force

In the cowboy fast draw association competitions they use specially modified casings so you can replace the primers with ease "they fall out if not in your revolver" and they use wax slugs with no powder. Pretty much the same thing as using ear plugs but they hit harder

As a correctional officer we used foam rounds in the 40mm and accuracy is not that great once you get beyond about 50 feet. Our rounds had a hard plastic piece between the foam and the propellent to keep the foam from being shredded by the blast.

Try twisting the casing in a thin layer of wax. That's how we used to do indoor shooting. Be sure to clean well after using.

Now it would be interesting to load a bullet to the casing without the gunpowder and see if it would leave the barrel and with what energy. Maybe a future experiment?

That actually happens once in awhile to bullet reloaders (and to me). Depending on the kind of loader you have, it's possible to end up with a bullet crimped onto a case without gunpowder, and what usually happens is that the bullet gets lodged in the barrel and has to be hammered out with a dowel. This is called a squib. What's especially dangerous is if the bullet gets lodged in the barrel and you don't realize it. Then the next round can impact the stuck bullet in the barrel and the whole gun can explode. It's no bueno. Brandon Lee was killed in an accidental firing of a squib that lodged in a blank gun on the set of The Crow.

Please.... don't attempt this, anybody. Unless you already are very familiar with squib loads and just want to educate people on what can happen, don't do it. Don't load your gun with anything besides bullets made for your gun. If you like making your own rounds, fine, but just know that's where a lot of gun accidents come from.

Juho Leiniö bullets are pretty tight into the shell casing, it would be difficult to get t to leave the barrel. Also taking into account the weight of the bullet as opposed to the earplug.

first nerf bullet. then follow up with nerf vs earplug against oobleck. that way we can see the impact force. and last and impact meter. like psi but either layered or sensor.

Cowboy fast draw(not cowboy action shooting) uses .45 long colt cartridges with the primer pocket drilled out to hold a shotgun primer, no powder, and wax bullets.

I don’t think adding powder in the casing increase the velocity of the projectile because the earplug being so lightweight, there is basically no compression behind it therefore the powder just burns instead of exploding...

Brewmaster C yeah maybe a little bit but he’s not even close to use all the potential power of the amount of powder he poured in otherwise the earplug will live the barrel at crazy speed. Maybe it would work better in a longer barrel...
