Are eBikes Sh*t For Good Mountain Bikers?

We've all had eMTB envy before - after putting all your effort into a climb, having an electric mountain bike pass you with ease can be extremely frustrating! Surely there must be a trade-off for the climbing ability, or does the extra weight help with descending as well? Neil Donoghue and Blake Samson are used to riding fast and jumping high, will a heavier bike affect their ability to perform or will it just enhance the fun?

Yep, I own Reign E+1 (170/160) - pretty capable ebike, nice for riding around my area when I have no access to the lifts. I used it as well in Saalbach due transportation over the top to the Leogang. I am regularly towing my little boy (7) so we can enjoy local trails together. Time to time I help some of the friends. In our group we already have 4 ebikes with 5th on the way :) Its perfect for local trails around the city. But I have to say I have another (DH) bike for bikeparks :) I used to have trail/enduro bike, but I found I used it purely in bikeparks since my buy of the ebike....so I switched to DH.

Yes Sir! At my age 46, and my background of Enduro (Moto) I never done or have a MTB. So I went for it and discovered very fast that this is a good way to keep in shape and just go out and ride with your friends. And Yes, I towed some people during some events. I think people o "boo" or dislike the ebikes never had the chance to really appreciate and just complain for nothing. Honestly is 2 different categories and for sure we get help, but if you want to push as hell you can. Just change the assist mode like I did and ride only on eco, profile 2 Stock, 25kg and eco mode on my Canyon Neuron on 7 is a good workout! Good Job!🔥

I think the real solution is to move where the limit is 20mph ;-P Seriously, I rarely bump off the 20mph limit on trail and if I do it is somewhere I'd be coasting anyway on any bike. Coming up on 1000 miles on my Giant Trance E+ - right at 1 year owning it. Still riding my other bikes too and getting better on those because of the eMTB repetition and after a much heavier/longer wheelbase/longer travel bike for much longer rides, some new skills along with upper body strength are showing up - at 56y/o!!!

Coming from a motocross background, I got into MTB in the late 1980’s. Always missed the ‘heft’ of a motocross bike when mtb’ing. Modern geometry Mtbs have certainly made this sensation reduce greatly for me, but one ride on an Orbea Rise felt like I’d finally come back home. It’s a real effect, one that most riders won’t ‘get’, but you guys did hit on that sensation very accurately. While emtb access lags greatly behind Europe, the 20 mph limit is a sweet spot. Michigan (where I live) is set to go fully legal regarding class-1 eebs in 2024, so I might finally justify getting an Orbea Rise….

A good honest review. I have owned an E-bike for the last 3 years and love the way they descend. My limiter is 32.0 k/hr and I think that makes a huge difference. I still feel there is still a place for normal MTB's. I am almost 59 and have just brought a new enduro bike as well.

Regarding the limiter. If Im riding a shallow downhill where I need to pedal a lot, I always put my bike in eco mode. That way you wont drop out of turbo and be in a too heavy gear just before a jump.

The EMTB has so many advantages, but one really stands out, compromise or lack of. You can run big suspension, brakes, tires, aggressive geo, etc, with NO climbing penalties. Traverse any terrain, any time, any conditions.

I really enjoy my Norco Sight VLT. We have big mountains to ride up in Vancouver area and it has actually brought back joy in climbing again. Downhill is not quite the same but pretty darn great! I still keep my regular bike for bike park or shuttle days. The ebike gets me more laps and leaves me less tired to enjoy the downhill and the downhill is why is the reason I ride.

The speed limit is a deal breaker for me, got rid of my e-bike because it is the single biggest restriction and ruins the bike, it’s heavy and you need that assisted power at any speed.
@cycologist7069
@cycologist7069 5 ай бұрын
Good or bad, the speed limit is what probably allowed them on trails that otherwise would not allowed any kind of motorized craft. It may or may not make sense that that's kind of how it is. Also the low speed in Europe IMO is why there's pretty much no contention between e-mountain bike riders and regular mountain bike riders.

I think e bikes are great, they bring the fun back into riding. Not only does it save time riding up hills but when your on the trails it makes it so much easier. But I’ve had 2 different e bikes because 1 of them were faulty from factory and the other one has broken on me once within 130 miles. Other then that great bikes, don’t even notice the weight difference

I bought my first E bike 3 months ago. Done about 100 mile on it far. Are they worth it? If youvdo alot of riding I will say yes. Don't buy one if you get out once in a blue moon as they are expensive and when I don't use mine for a week I feel guilty it's sat and I paid 5k for it! I've ridden hardtails and full sus for 20 years and I thought I'd give E a go. All I can say is they are amazing in every aspect IMO. Yes the climbing post a good downhill trail is a breeze and allows you to crack on and get a few more runs in. But I found the transition between fun sections mid trail is where it stands out. You can pedal are create so much more speed then you would on a regular bike. Allowing you to make most of the flat sections like a downhill! It makes the whole trial more fun! And it allows you to do trails more often without needing a breather. I love mine. The speed restriction can be annoying when it maxes out but I also think if I was derestricted I would of been in hospital a whole lot more! I find my self blasting into sections at max chat when the original design was to take X corner at the speed a mere mortal good generate, not a turbo mode e bike. I have had some near misses on sections yu shouldn't! When the warranty runs out and I can safely remove the restriction will I? Maybe but I end up breaking myself. Also I found myself riding I full turbo mode all the time. This week did 4 trails I normally scream down in turbo in trail and gave it big licks and the areas I sometime get a little sideways or close to trees and rocks I wa safe. My first thought was "wow I'm so much better now!" No the answer was no you are not! I proceded to do all thr trials in full turbo mode and the same areas ended up a problem as you simply carry so much more momentum the whole trails is obsurd! Am I pro rider? No? Does my ebike make me feel like one? Yes! Would anyone else think so? I doubt it!

I was very anti E-MTB for quite some time, and to some extent I still am. I picked up an S-Works Kenevo SL several months ago after taking one out for a weekend demo ride. (If you hate them don't demo one is all I have to say now) I can absolutely say the SL is a blast to ride. The speed limit doesn't bother me at all. I ride an Intense Tracer as my Enduro race bike and love to go fast as well. The Kenevo lets me go nearly as fast since its only a few pounds heavier. Its the perfect bike for having fun getting up the mountain and then blasting back down it again several times in a row. Its completely changed my opinion on E-MTB. I haven't been on a full fat, and dont plan on it any time soon, but I am sure they are a blast as well.

I you have a bit older frame, it's not much work to fix your own kit to it. tongshen makes some nice, cheap, torque sensor mid drives. Tsdz10 is designed for emtb usage, but I'm using a tsdz2b which is meant for e-city/e-touring but so far it's been steller anyway. Thing is, the spindle is rather weak due to it being small diamter and there are circ clip grooves in it. For me it's not that bad, I am a lightweight. But if you're not. jumps/drops will probably result eventually in a broken spindle. Which you can replace for not much cash... Or, if you got a little bit more cash to spend up front, TOSEVEN makes nice kits. Thing is, you can forget mounting any of these to a carbon frame, just never going to happen. And even newer bikes with >73mm bottom bracket can be a pain, there are kits with longer spindles though so that should be fixable. And both TOSEVEN and Tongshen make torque sensor mid drives at good prices, unlike BAFANG which is cadence based and not suited really for embt usage.

I think you hit it on the head. The 15.5mph limit really sucks on jumps that need a bit more speed and I find I'm either riding different trails or on some where pedalling is required putting in way more effort than I'd need to on my real bikes or mates who have chipped theirs. I ride 4-6 times a week and probably take the eMTB less than half but if anything I just ride more especially if I might otherwise lack motivation and that somehow overlaps with the speed limiter being a pain on some gaps. I tow people all the time, probably 1/2 the eMTB rides and swapped bikes yesterday just so I could tow someone who was having a bad day. As 'lighter than Neil ' the full fat MTB weight doesn't bother me at all except with the caveat of jumps I need to pedal past assist.

I ride a Rotwild RE375. It kinda sits between the light and the full e-bikes as it has a full 85nm ep8 alongside a small quick release 375wh battery. Riding downhill I rarely notice the resistance from the motor. On more flat trails where you are pushing into that 25km/h restriction I just drop the assist down to eco to make them legs work. But a 32km/h limit would be better.

I ride the Canyon Spectral:ON 9.0 with a 9ooW battery and yesturday I rode a 32 mile route around the Peaks taking in Win Hill then onto some down hills in the adjacent to the Hill then onto Edale then a hook around near Hayfield and a decent down Jacobs Ladder. The total climbs for the day was 5240 Feet, and a lot of the climbs you would struggle if not need to push up on a normal MTB. I had 4 miles of range left according to the computer. And yes the odd time I would super man my mate on his normal MTB, and that is where I extend my arm out and push his shoulder area. Really need a bit rope though.

I have the Wild 2 years now. Great bike...Bosch motor is really quiet, had no issues. Upgraded the brakes to Hope tech4 and they're perfect for handling the weight. Put a Halo Gravitas on the back with a rockstop insert. Ive a magic Mary on the front and a big Betty on the back, but i don't like the big Betty... It doesn't do lateral grip at all, so I'll put Mary on the back and an Assegai up front. 2 years riding; 5000 kilometres; I've had 3 mechs, 2 hangers and 4 chains. I'm on my second chainring.... Just bought a Santa Cruz Nomad V3 off a lad for 800 quid and I have to say it's a bit more fun downhill, and I need to pedal up properly a good bit or else I'll lose the power in my legs again. The Eeber is way better fun when you've the fitness level to ride a normal bike. Once you've had an emtb for a while, it kinda starts to make sense that you ride it less. One thing it is good for which nobody has seemed to mention, is session'ing .... The emtb is the ultimate session tool

I don’t normally ride my acoustic bike for more than 2 hrs at a time. So, I don’t anticipate needing a mega range system in an ebike. But, having that capability could allow me to actually do long 3+ hour rides, as I’ve never considered it as a regular option

my bet is both of you will only ride EMTB when you hit 70 years old!! Good video and I agree the assisted speed limit is just a little too low but on the downhill runs with jumps ( little ones!) that I ride there is only one that I notice it....the rest gravity does the work assisted by the weight of the bike and 29 front and back wheels....and some pumping.......so no pedalling required! You mentioned riding different terrain and the challenge of techy uphill climbs that no standard MTB could negotiate but beware......long, slack, big travel bikes are not the best climbers.....as Blake demonstrated!!😁

Don’t understand the complaint of speed limit? It’s just that the assist cuts off? There is no limit? When going downhill on an e-bike I generally turn assist off or at least to low. It may be that when pedalling down when you hit the limit the assist cuts out. Likely you will be in a more difficult gear than normal because you’ve had assist artificially making your legs stronger. So the trick is to tailor the level of assist on the downs (or turn it off) and get the gear into the right place so you can control the speed better at that higher pace? Also weight wise in terms of trail damage as people have mentioned - something to think about - what is heavier? A 100kg person on a 12kg bike? Or a 80kg person on a 20kg e-bike?

I have one, with the 500Wh battery. I find it quite frustrating to pedal when you are out of charge. Movind those 24 kilos is hard. I have the speed limit removed (live in a place where the limit is much higher and the limit is on power, not speed). I'd say it's worth it if you've got 650-700+ Wh battery and with no speed limit. Maybe that's because I tend to go on multi hour rides every time. Commuting to work or going to a shop is very cool on a bike like that though.

Kinda the weights of the old gravity sleds I used to ride, without the uphill coronary. I think maybe the comment that you ride it differently is the most telling. eMTB's are sure capable fun in their niche, but they're not MTB's. Thankfully, some of us can still ride those well into our sixties. I'll get an eMTB when I'm old enough for golf!

My problem with eMTB is, that a lot of the people riding them are not, at the skill level that the trail requires. I've been riding my local trails for 30 years with little change to them. The trails have taken a beating with a lot of easier bailouts created in the last year or so. Some parts have gone from single track with a step up, to something you can drive a MAC truck on.

Depends on what your riding, a trail with a lot of jumps and big drops a lighter bike would be better. My ebike is 62lbs it's like a flying tank, but it's fun as heck on intermediate runs. Whatever trail I'm riding I'll choose one or the other that's why I have both electric and regular.

Chip, chip, chip. I ride in BC where the limit is 32 kph. I ride an RM PP, big bike that handles almost anything with ease. Early on I found out how dangerous the limiter can be when I cased a gap jump that I would normally sailed over on my analog Slayer. Big hit, hard landing. When you hit the limiter it’s like dropping an anchor, not what a guy needs upon approaching a jump. Chipped my bike and now make the gap no problem. I know, warranty is fucked if it ever has to be sent back for motor repairs but that is small beer compared to crashing hard due to the limiter. And besides, I really don’t think the chip is that hard on the motor, it really only kicks in for perhaps 2 seconds at a time 2-3 times per really fast DH.

These guys are showing exactly why I do not like e-bikes on the trails - they go out on muddy days and rip-up the trails with deep ruts. If e-bike riders would just stay off the trails on wet days and show some consideration for other riders, I would have no problem with them. In fact, I believe that handicapped or >50 year-old riders should be allowed to use them anywhere.d

Does having a motor help with traction? I'm sure having the extra weight will help but I actually mean using the power of the motor! You guys were riding up some pretty wet and slick looking root rock sections, I'm pretty sure I'd be struggling to get up there.
@gmbn
@gmbn 6 ай бұрын
I think it's a combination of a few things. The weight would help with traction but the motor itself wouldn't change anything, tyre choice would make the biggest change for traction. Because the motor is doing a lot of the work you can focus on balancing more than putting down power which definitely helps!

A demo Whyte E180rs made me feel like a hero, I could ride turns and rough faster than I ever could on my trail bike. The weight, the travel, the extra grippy tyres that you can afford to lug about. Totally useless for our weekly down country style rides and the many styles and hedges we go over.

Totally agree with the weight thing and riding differently. I love drifting my ebike through corners, it's just so much easier to control. I rarely drift my acoustic, it just doesn't give the same feeling back to give me the confidence to do it.

Just a thought, but it could be possible for ebikes to hurt the mountain bike industry. I saw this in the radio control Helicopter hobby, with drones. You see, when you make something easier, then you seemly open the door for more people. What I saw in the R/C industry, was an advancement in technology and electronics that help a new person, or advanced a seasoned veteran. The influx of those that really don't want to work for it, or quit when they get bored with it, started killing the hobby over time. Part of this was directly related to manufacturing and business. The client changed, and sales/marketing changed. Within a few years, the whole hobby changed. The details could be argued. But mark my words, we could see bikes marketing changes that actually hurt the sport. We seem to be at a peak of some of the best mtb right now. I just wonder what companies will survive this new era.

@eXaviar the Trek Fuel Exe does not suffer from that issue due to the TQ motor it uses. When you reach speed cut off, the motor disengages from the cranks. Feels like a normal bike.
