The last time they were anywhere near that level was probably the late 80s, and even then they never got further than a semi-final. The only reason they're anywhere near the top now is because all the other countries are currently in the mud with the exception of one or two. Belgium are finished, Italy have their worst collection of players since football has existed in that country, no one knows where Germany are at, Holland & Spain are rebuilding. The only squads in Europe that are anywhere near their peak in terms of ability right now are France (it's one of their best generations) and Portugal. Also, Rui Costa is one of the greatest number 10s of all time, and definitely Portugal's best ever in that position. I'm sure Cams just meant Euro 2004 because he was a bit past it by that point, but around the time of Euro 96 and Euro 2000, Rui Costa was getting called better than Zidane by some people in Serie A.
