izzylovesjams Their location is in Asia, but not their roots. The Spanish came and raped, or repopulated with, the Austronesians inhabiting the islands. Creating Filipinos. The Spanish conquered and ruled the Philippines for 300 years. And the Spanish named the Philippines after their King, Philips II. There’s a lot of Spanish in the language and a lot of Filipinos have Spanish last names. After the 300 year reign in the Philippines, the Spanish colonization fell to rebellion or something, I honestly don’t know, America occupied the Philippines. During this, the Americans attempted to erase a lot of Spanish influences from the Filipino culture. They did a great job, but the Spanish aspects will always be in the language and in the names. Also, in dancing because a lot of Filipinos naturally can dance and move smoothly to music. But I digress. Spanish repopulated with Austronesians, creating Filipinos.

American Pop Culture with the types of Moana and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson have added the brains of new generation Fil-Ams who look up to these personas as their ethnic role models. Never and not even once have primary to tertiary education in the Philippines have labelled Filipinos as Pacific Islanders but as ASIANS. But who are we to dispute the Fil-Ams if they wish to be identified as Pacific Islanders as if that's their fantasy then let them believe that as long as they don't include genuine homegrown Pinoys in their confusion.

So let them live their own fantasies. They after all are no longer fully indictrinated in our history and Culture but by a foreign one. We on the otherhand whom were born and bred in our beloved motherland knows exactly what facts and truths are and not some displaced Pinoy descents living thousands of miles away being born and bred in a foreign Land clueless about their true heritage and history. But what exactly is an American but an amalgation of displaced foreigners on Native Anerinduan Land. Their Culture and history is but just recent and manufactured compared to ours.

@@robertoiiigianzon1623 Well, some Filipino-Americans weren't just satisfied by identifying as Pacific Islanders but they also had the gall to coin the terms Filipinx and Pinxy and put those in Dictionary.com. They should've described the terms specific to the 'Filipino diaspora in the United States of America or Americans of Filipino descent' but they really had to include the 'natives or inhabitants of the Philippines'. I understand the Filipino diaspora's need for such terms but those terms are not relevant to the natives. I just checked and apparently the said dictionary changed their previous definitions to 'people of Philippine origin or descent, especially those living in the United States'. Finally, that digital dictionary heard the natives' concerns and revised their definitions which are now better suited to the diaspora. And speaking of Disney's Moana, I'm glad that Southeast Asians are going to have a representation in the form of Raya and the Last Dragon. Maybe the diaspora will get to embrace that they're Asians. Also, I feel like this video didn't really address the title or question. Since he's in the land of Uncle Sam whilst advocating Philippine history, I'm wondering if he considers himself Asian or Pacific Islander or both...

If you're going to look at the mythology, Philippine is far more closer to Asia... The Tikbalang Aswang, they came from Indian Influence (no the Spaniards did not invent it, they just exploited it as one of the many ways to control us, even the Kapre is not of Spanish Origin) even the Bakunawa have similiarities to Chinese myth... And don't even get me started with the Mananaggal and their head removing counsins from Malaysia and Indonesia. The Epic Ibalon and Biag ni Lam ang are Ramayana inspired epics from india heck even the Baybayin have sanskrit origins in it if you're going to study. The more you go deeper ob our mythos the more you understand the connection we have with our Asian neighbors. And that's just the myth part

Never have i ever heard of the term “pacific islanders” to describe us Filipinos. It’s not written in our Philippine history textbooks. Although our country is located amongst the Pacific ocean and we have over 7,100 islands, which makes sense. So does that make us both Asians and Pacific Islanders? Whatever it is PACIFIC ISLANDER or AUSTRONESIAN, every people in the world should know where they belong. Well there's a two meaning of a word Asians The first meaning is Asians is the people who lived in the Asian Continent The second meaning is Asians as a race or ethnicity, majority in Chinese, Korean and Japanese East Asian region.

Filipinos are strictly Asians - Southeast Asian to be exact, not Pacific Islanders. Yes we are under one group of people as Austronesians but so are the ones in Madagascar and yet they are still referred to as Africans simply due to its close proximity with Africa. Calling Filipinos as Pacific Islanders is grossly inaccurate and misleading considering that we were not historically and culturally isolated from ALL of Asia (China, India, SE Asia) evidenced by influences to our languages, food, habits and culture.

Yes thank you! In fact Philippines was influenced by China before the Spaniards and in fact the country in Oceana was not influenced by China so that’s how America got themselves confused.

Cube Thinker Everything is a blanket term. Who is really Micronesian? Who is really Polynesian? Where do we draw the line? What makes Kiribati Micronesian and not Polynesian? There’s no good way of telling who goes where. You just have to accept what the world sees you as. If the world were to see Micronesians as Asians, then i guess I’m Asian. People always group Pacific Islanders with Asians anyways. But That’s just how the world in general groups the different peoples on this earth. And I guess people see Filipinos as more culturally similar to what is stereotyped as “Asian”. And I’m not gonna speak about the Syrians because I don’t know anything about them. The reason why I’m saying Filipinos are asian is because the island way of life is not there any more. Right now, Filipino culture is more Asian. Today. As of now. Whether you want to admit it or not. Micronesians are still living the island way, just a modern version of it. The culture is Pacific Islander. The way in which they live/are is what the world sees as “Pacific Islander”. Therefore Micronesians are Pacific Islander by the world’s standards. I don’t know what’s so hard for you to understand. The Philippines has a long history with China. So in regards to your thought process does that make Filipinos Chinese? No. They are more Asian than Pacific Islander. Historically they were just like their Pacific Islander cousins but with migration, people mixing, and centuries of Spanish rule, the island way of living is not there. And in regards to my thought process of Micronesians being Filipino, the answer is no. Micronesians aren’t like the Filipinos today. The people who are called Micronesians today left before influence from China came to the Philippines. One example: Look at the food. Where did lumpia come from? Siopao? Pancit? A lot of Pacific Islanders are still in the taro patches and pounding breadfruit just like their ancestors. The cultures are different. That’s where people draw the line. That’s what’s “accepted by the world”. Try arguing with the world.
@uts4448

Cube Thinker I read all of it. And I apologize. I replied out of frustration also. But I hear what you’re saying about the Chamorros. It’s sad to say but they lost their original culture because of centuries of Spanish rule. So I hope they aren’t looking down on you Filipinos. They have a lot in common with Filipinos and the other Micronesians, but most of the time the Pacific Islanders bash on them because it seems like what they claim to be their “traditional” dances look Polynesian when it should look more related to Micronesian or even Filipino. Also... even though my people (Chuukese) are Micronesian like them, they look down on us too. They always tell us to go back to our islands. Yes I agree. The bad ones need to go back and stay over there, but when they say Chuukese in general, it’s just ignorant. And I think it’s sad that the “island culture” is looked down over there. They know how to live off the land. It’s one of the things they still have from the ancestors. When they are stranded somewhere they’ll know how to survive. And I see what you said about Spanish rule destroyed filipino culture. It’s the same for us with the little time that the Japanese occupied our islands. We have a lot of words that come from Japanese. The original way we dressed stopped because of them. No tattooing, no coconut shell earrings, no wooden combs, no dog teeth necklaces. lol let me get off that. Other than that I think it’s sad that the world separates us. It’s the world we live in.

The Philippines is at a crossroads in the Pacific, and Filipinos are therefore a very genetically diverse group of people. Genetic studies have indicated that most ancient bloodlines (Negrito groups) probably came from Oceania and Australia about 47,000 years ago! There is more recent evidence that there is a genetic link to India that has not been observed in other Southeast Asian groups. However, the Philippines was most likely populated mostly via Austronesian expansion dating back about 5 000 years ago. This group could include what is considered Pacific Islanders like Hawaii, Fiji, Guam, etc. More recently of course, there are connections to China, Arabia, Spain, U.S., etc. I think Kirby is basically correct in asserting that classifying Filipinos as Pacific Islanders is quite a stretch both geographically and genetically. Certainly, Filipinos are far more similar to Asians culturally. BUT what does it really matter? Filipinos are first and foremost Filipinos - a richly diverse and unique culture unlike any other! I don't know why some people insist upon falling within a specific ethnic or cultural identity. We are what we are! More and more that means we are a mixture of many different races and cultures. You don't have to be one or the other, you can just be yourself!

Yes, the Philippines is a crossroad in the Pacific. therefore, the people consist of a very genetically diverse group. Geographically, million years ago the Philippines was very much part of the Pacific, near the Marianas and Guam islands hence it was previously part of the Polynesian-island grouping. However, being located near the Pacific divide, the shifting tectonic plates is pushing the Philippines nearer and nearer to the Asian mainland, hence, its present geographic location near Asia.

Both negrito filipinos and austronesian filipinos originate from asia. But, we(mainly austronesian filipinos) are more different ethnically and genetically similar to asians. Even though the islands were said to be polynesian homeland, we have grown more different over the many years. It's like africans, we all come from africa and as we traveled out the continent we have slight changes. THese changes define what is now the different human races. SO like in the philippines, polynesians moved out of the islands but they grew different than the natives of the philippines. THose polynesians and along other pacific islander groups made a more different, beatiful, and unique culture, etc. from Asia and what is now the PHilippines. These groups make up what is now called the pacific islanders. We are all part of the human race but, we have different genetics and culture and that what makes us different, that makes africans and asians different, and that what makes the pacific islanders different from filipinos.

Filipinos in or living in the Philippines, and who are still in the Philippine, like me, rarely got confused with our identity. We always refer to ourselves as Asians and not as Pacific Islanders. Our country is geographically, culturally, historically, geologically, ethnically, politically, and linguistically more tied with our Asian neighbors or at least our close Southeast Asian neighbors. Our country is not a part of Micronesia, Melanesia, and Polynesia regions or areas to be a part of the Pacific Islands or Oceania super region. I guess that only Filipinos in USA or in the Americas and elsewhere, and or half/biracial or mixed or ethnically ambiguous Filipinos in USA and in the Americas or elsewhere have this identity issue.

Nobody in the Philippines considers themselves 'Pacific Islanders', we always called ourselves 'Asians', 'Southeast Asians' to be precise. It's more like a problem for Americans of Filipino ancestry, whereas here in the Philippines, it was never a problem. Unlike the Pacific island nations, we had history, trading relations and cultural influence from other Asian nations like the Chinese, Indians and to very small extent, Japanese, Arabs and Persians before Europeans arrived. We're much closer to Indonesians and Malaysians than those Austronesians in the Pacific. And that's what many Fil-Ams seem to ignore when they think of Filipino identity.

Interesting video, but it fails to address the underlying categories in question. Which are geographic (Asia), and racial (Asian/Pacific Islander). Asia is a very broad geographic category devised from a Eurocentric tradition of cartography. The etymological origins of Asia is simply east (more specifically towards the direction of sunrise). East of what? Well Europe. This is very broad and clearly biased. Attempts are made to divide the Asia into: Central Asia, South Asia, East Asia and South East Asia. Which does work to a degree. Then there is the racial category; which is not very precise either. Some how embracing peoples from Turkmenistan to Japan.

Here is a question for you Filipinos. As a Polynesian myself, a lot of us Polynesians and other Pacific Islanders I've talked to, see Filipino Americans that claim to be Pacific Islanders as people who love our culture and wishes it were their own. We see them as people who hate themselves and their own culture so much that even though the people who these Filipino Americans want to associate with (Polynesians) try to educate them, they harden their brain and refuse to listen to the truth even though the facts are clear. But here is the question, why? What is so bad about being Filipino that make these Filipino Americans try to be something they are not? Is all this due to Filipino Americans wanting to avoid negative Asian stereotypes?
@andthestorybegins5597
@andthestorybegins5597 2 жыл бұрын
This mostly happens with Filipino Americans. First and foremost was because of colonialism. Then, to avoid yes, Asian stereotypes. And probably to elevate their status. Because deny it as much as we want, race is still a big thing in the US. One time, I got in a heated argument with a bunch of them. And believe me, as a Filipino who live my whole life in the Philippines it's so frustrating.

@@piosian4914 Paraiso de Zambo About Zamboanga‎ > ‎ History Many Filipino historians have neglected the importance of one's provinces and town here in the Philippines . They don't give enough concentration on the other places that gives us the fact that those occurrence lead to many different aspects of our Philippine history.This article will take you back in time and experience how Zamboanga's old days is rich and meaningful In the late 12th or early 13th century, Zamboanga was founded. Subanens were the early people of Zamboanga. They were of Malay origin who came at about 6,000 to 2,500 years ago. Subanen people name it "Sung Lupa" which means "pointed land" and they called Pasonanca "Nawan" meaning "future" where they establish. They also have a leader. A Subano leader is like a Barangay Captain nowadays. His leadership is in terms of the number of families residing under his dominion. Zamboanga City was also a site of the Spanish settlement and garrison on La Caldera which is now called Barrio Recodo in 1969. This place also served as a military outpost, to protect the area from foreign invaders and Moro pirates. Upon the consent of King Philip IV, Zamboanga became the main headquarters of the Spaniards in June 23,1635 and the Spanish officialy founded the city . The Zamboanga fortress which is known as Fort Pilar were approved to build by a governor general from Spain to forestall enemies in Mindanao like Moro Pirates and other foreign invaders. The name "Zamboanga" provides an interesting historical background. This was called "Jambangan" by the early Malay settlers which means Land of Flowers. The Samals and Badjaos also came here with their feil vintas and they were confused with the word "Jambangan" with "Samboangan" which came from the word "Sabuan ", the wooden pole used to help push their Vintas in Shallow watersor to tie them for anchorqage purposes.The word "Samboangan" was found difficult to pronounce by Spaniards. So, this was preferably called "Zamboanga". This place was also considered as the center of barter trading among Chinese, Malays and the native Tausugs, Samals, Subanens and the Badjaos as early as 13th and 14th centuries. The introduction of Islam was lead by Mukdum,Rayah Baginda and Abu-Bakr. They are an Arab missionaries and teaches of Sulu reached the shore of Sulu at about 1480 to 1490.The one who introduced Islam in Cotabato was Sherif Kabungsuan and it begun to spread through Mindanao including Zamboanga . There were new culture ,some natives converted to Islamism while others retreated to mountains and remain pagans. The introduction of Christianity begun when Spaniard built their first fort in La Caldera (presently Recodo). At first it was a wooden palisade but later reconstructed with stone in 1593. The first conversion of Christianity could have taken place here among the Sama-Lutaos and the Subanen who were staying with the vicinity of the Spanish settlement.

Asian is such an old term and the Western Asians really have very little in common with Eastern Asians :/ There's really no reason why we can differentiate Asians more :/ Like so: Pacific Asians: This includes Any Asian countries east of Myanmar and China (with China included). These countries have the highest Chinese Cultural Influence. Hindustani Asians: This includes the countries of India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Bhutan. These countries have the highest Indian cultural influence. Turkic Asians: These include the Stans countries, the Caucus countries and Turkey. These countries have the highest turkic influence as well as Russian influences. Arabic Asians: These countries are countries in the Arab peninsula. These have the highest Arab cultural influences. Of course this type of categorising is deeply controversial (Especially when I put India and Pakistan on the same group) but that is roughly divinded culturally and linguisticly. The problem would be Afghanistan which might be more closer to Hindustani Asians than Turkic Asian countries. Myanmar might also me closer to Hindustani Asians as well than Pacific Asians. Mongolia is also Turkic but it has a lot of Chinese influence so I categorised it as Pacific Asian but I might be wrong. Lastly, I don't know where to fit Iran since they definately do not want to be grouped in the same group as Saudi Arabia. Israel is also pretty tricky overall.

The Philippines is presently located in Asia, but previously (million years ago) it was part of the Pacific ocean island group. The movement of the tectonic plates and the Pacific ocean divide have pushed the Philippines away from its Pacific island grouping and is coming nearer and nearer to Asia. The Philippines is a Spanish colony for 350+ years and have a facial and cultural affinity with Mexico and neighboring south American countries. Therefore by present location, the Filipinos are rightfully considered as Asians, but their previous location in the Pacific also bestows them to be called Polynesian/Pacific-islanders and lastly their Hispanic history rightfully entitles them to be called Latinos of Asia.

that was perfect. Finally a great answer that I can tell to people who would ask me. I was born and raised til 12 in the Philippines. I thought I was Asian then. I actually became racially confused when I came to the US cause a lot of people were saying to me things like "but you're not really asian... you're a pacific islander.... you're something else..." add to that, a lot of applications, even government ones; when it came to filling out your "country of birth," Philippines isn't under the "Asia" list. instead, I'd find it under pacific islands. so it has been so confusing.

The war, US took away both from philipino. and similar war happened the 1960s in Vietnam, bat US have failed, and Vietnam peoples had won, in spite Malcos send arms there. "Vie et nam" means "love and name" in French. I know Japan also suffered a lot you may point it out. bat they defeated and never war again.

I grew up in Hawaii, and I can tell you it is very easy to recognize whos Asian and whos pacific islander, Hawaii is such a melting pot that you can spot certain ethnicities, especially Asians and whites, and let me tell you filipinos are the only ones that get mixed up, if you're Japanese, you never get questioned for another race other than Chinese or korean, you're Thai you never get mixed up with any other race but lao or vietnamese, but when you're Filipino you often get mixed and confused for Hawaiian, Micronesian, or Mexican lmfao, I think the problem with the confusion is that a lot of filipinos and people who never grew up with a a large community of pacific islanders or in the states, don't even know what a pacific islanders are nor do they kniw how they live, once they move to a place that is culturally mixed with almost every culture like Hawaii, they will realize how much more relatable they are to pacific islanders than Asians, thats just my opinion, So I think once you experience living with both Asians and pacific islanders you will know which one you identify yourself with more, Don't forget filipinos are island people,

As a Polynesians myself and as someone who was born and raised in Hawaii, I don't think Polynesian culture is more relatable. Hell if Filipino Americans knew their culture, they'd be more relatable with other Southeast Asians. Most of us Polynesians see Filipino Americans as what they are, Asians that wish they were us. You say don't forget Filipinos are island people? Technically, England is on an island so the English are island people too by definition if you look up the definition of the word "islander".

Filipinos are Asian. Consider that the Philippine archipelago is located at the eastern edge of Asia even though the country is located at the western edge of the Pacific Ocean. The Filipino people are ethnically connected to the other Malay, Taiwanese, and Indochinese peoples than to the various island nations scattered across the Pacific Ocean.

I think slavery was already abolished decades before in America during the Amercian occupation and war in the Philippines(1901 onwards) because the American Civil war ended in 1865, along with it, the legality of slavery. Also, Philippines can also be considered pacific islanders due to their ancestors being sea-faring Austronesian/Polynesian Nomads looking for new lands to call their home, so technically, we are Pacific Islanders, then cross-breeding, chinese and foreign trade, and multiple occupations later, our culture became more and more Asian.

Austronesians are, by genetics, an East Asian race group. Our ancestors came from Southeast China and Taiwan and were and are ethnic siblings to other Asian ethnic groups such as Thais and Lao (Tai-Kadai in southern and southwestern China), Mon-Khmer of Cambodia and Kinh of Northern Vietnam (Chams are part of the Austronesian ethnic group). According to a number of anthropologists, we are referred to as “Sundadont Mongoloids” or “Southern Mongoloids”. And yes, that means northeast Asians such as the Chinese, Koreans, and Japanese are our ethnic cousins. We are closely related to them and share common prehistoric ancestry.

Southeast Asia are composed of the following countries: the Philippines, Brunei, East Timor, Indonesia, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Filipinos are definitely ASIANS and I, being an Asian, have kinship feelings with all other Asians (not just the Southeast Asians), i.e., being proud that Asians are considered the model minority in other countries, and when Asians are discriminated or bullied, I feel the hurt in them. The ancestors of Filipinos are Malays (those from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, et al) and Filipino dialects have LOTS of similarities with Malay dialects. The Philippines is also a part of the the Austronesian countries in which Pacific Islanders are also a part of. Austronesian countries s are the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, Myanmar, East Timor, Madagascar, Micronesia, Cambodia, Hainan, Polynesia (New Zealand and Hawaii), the non-Papuan people of Melanesia, the Pattanis of Thailand, the Chads of Vietnam, parts of Sri Lanka, and the original Taiwanese people.

We're Asian, period. If we're Pacific Islanders, then shouldn't Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Timor-Leste, Singapore & Brunei count as Pacific Islanders too? And besides, I have never heard of Philippines being described as Pacific Islanders (or alternative vocabulary: part of Oceania) until just months ago tbh :/ Also, to the people who think Asia is just China, Mongolia, Japan & the two Koreas: Indians (The South Asia ones not the native Americans), Siberians, Turks, Persians, even Arabs and Jews, aren't they also Asians?!!! And yes, I'm aware we have Austronesian roots, Tagalog language even proves that. But fun fact: Madagascar too has Austronesian roots. Now would you consider it part of Africa or a separate place/culture from Africa?

To be honest, I consider it as both. Although I'm fine with putting myself as "Asian Other" here in the UK I definitely see it as a mix of pacific cultures / asian. We Filipinos are well integrated with prehistoric cultures and colonisation. As a definition however - we are limited to only as Asians. I don't really see the problem. Did you know Ilocano is part of the Austronesian family? Now that's confusing if you say that Pacific Islanders have nothing to do with Philippines. Or Vice Versa. It's all the same - in a modernised world we just put these labels to identify ourselves but we have to realise that we're all just tied together in a knot somehow.

We are genetically close to Pacific islanders because we are all Austronesians and so as Indonesians, Malaysians, and even people of Madagascar, so are people of Madagascar also Pacific Islanders because they are closer to Austronesian ancestors than that of its African neighbors? No. They are considered to be with Africa. So even though we are genetically Austronesians like Polynesians and Micronesians of the Pacific, and aside from we are also having aborigine tribes that are quite close to Melanesians and the aborigines of Australia, aside from we are living in islands to be grouped with Pacific "Islanders", we mostly consider ourselves as Asian geopolitically, geographically, and culturally, with also historical ties, biological fauna basis, being closer to previous Sundaland which is a part of Asia that is now under the seas. In fact people should not just be asking if we are Asians or Pacific Islanders, for we also have tribes here in our country close to aborigines of Australia and we also have citizens and culture much identified with Europe and Latin America. So the real question is "Are Filipinos Asians, Pacific Islanders, Aborigines, or more European or Latin American-like?" My personal answer is, we are Asians or we are on our own. Like we can identify with Asia, Pacific Islands, even with Australia (for some tribes) and with Europe or Latin America whenever we like and we choose to. We are on our own identity and let us be like that. Unique enough to be Asians, unique enough to be Pacific Islanders.
Are Filipinos Asian, Hispanic, or Pacific Islander?
