To people living in first world countries its really easy to say festivals don't matter. I live in the Caribbean and if you make a film here and it doesn't make noise in the market by entering film festivals and winning awards, you ain't cashing back any money at all from your film. Specially if you're not doing mainstream comedy which is the only thing that sells in cinemas here. Meanwhile, I've heard about movies doing 6 figures in terms of selling rights to international companies after doing well in festivals. If you don't do well in festivals and you are making artistic films you're throwing producers money into the trash while simultaneously not creating new relationships and not putting your name out there. You guys don't understand, Netflix wouldn't even answer an email from a film that hasn't achieved anything from a third world country, and if they do they won't offer a penny. Festivals are what put you in the international spotlight, give you hundreds of connections to producers and technicians around the world. Festivals are absolutely essential to anyone trying to make a decent living out of film making that doesn't live in Europe or USA. I'm not saying you should make films for festivals, but if you make a good film and spent a million dollars making it, then spending 5000 fishing for good festivals is potentially very benefitial, it's the only way to recoup the money in most cases.

I am from Antigua and know exactly what you saying.only when submitting to film festivals and your network is with persons internationally in the film community (USA/Europe/Canada) then people begin to take you seriously about the art. Sad but we got to keep pushing upwards to help open the door for others as we open for ourselves.

The only reason I submit to "Film festivals" anymore is so I can make it easier to get as much credits for myself on IMDB as possible. Perhaps my films are not that good, though I have seen way worse get into some of these set up festivals, but I have mostly had enough with the whole "We have decided not to accept your films and due to the large number of applicants, cannot give you feedback as to why." Response I get after I paid my fee. The least these jokers can do, after all the money people spend to submit them, is to give you feedback in how close it got and why it was not good enough so maybe next time young filmmakers can learn from their mistakes. Its a scam and I only submit to free festivals now.

Why the hell would we want to watch the work of people like you who have no real in interest in making good movies? People pay good money to travel and visit these festivals. I'm glad they are selective so we the audience don't have to watch more crap than we already do.

If you upload one of your films I'm willing to give you free critique. But the ones that were close to qualifying always get commentary. If your movie didn't get any comments it meant they watched 2 minutes of it and discarded it.

@@mukiwabanda2794 Define "No real interest in making good movies?" I sure as hell tried my best to do the best I could with the money I had and make movies of a solid quality. Eventually after enough times of struggling to get them out, I am not as easily enthusiastic about making films on a regular basis. But at this stage, I am more or less about making a name for myself to keep my career building. But I would like you to defy why mine are not considered "Good" when you have not seen my work? You make it sound as though if I am not fully grateful and even happy to NOT get feedback, then I MUST make bad films. Maybe I do, but without seeing my own work, how can you confidently assume I don't put effort and heart into my work?

@@sebaba001 Cheers for that. I will private message you on one of my links, as I am not too sure I will get anything other than some form of insult, given the previous comment I saw before. If my film(s) are not up to par, I understand, that is how I intend to improve if they are not up to the standard and I am told where I need to improve. Cheers.

@@gutz1981 I wouldn't ask you the time and effort to send me a link and me myself spending time to watch it and effort to critique it if I just wanted to insult it. If I get bored I might skim through after watching 20/30 minutes of it but at least I'll tell you what I didn't like and what I would enjoy more instead.

I feel like running after festival and awards is just another wild goose chase. You should focus on your work and making your film the right and best way possible. If you get awards and screenings it's great, it puts your work on the stage but don't bet on it to be the entrance door to executives office. Choose well the festivals. But the sad thing is, especially for short films, festivals are the only solution for a «distribution» as per say.

Even for full length films, if you live in a third world country festivals are the only way to ever really catch a distributors eye. Yet the biggest and most important festivals can be very political. All in all a real pain in the ass to break through.

Men and women are different get over it. There's not many woman directors because women don't get into directing. OnlyFans is most women's speed.

@@RedFlowas This female film director, who has over 60 laurels and counting for her first film and 12 and counting for her second, begs to differ, not on the point that we are different, but that women don't "get into" directing. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
