The Game Chasers

Let's talk about what got us into collecting in the first place. What did we first get? Why did we get it? What were our first games? What do these pieces of plastic mean to us? And what has it become?
We have talked a little about this but its times to go more in-depth about our obsession. Also, Melvor talks about toys..

I am Rama a blind person from Indonesia. I've been listening to The Game Chasers series. I really enjoy it because the conversation is very clear for me to understand. I played games when I was child (helped by my family and friends). Keep up the good work!

Melvor is absolutely right, when you start getting obsessed with condition of something or rarity I think the fun of collecting isn't there anymore. But when you collect stuff you love or loved as a kid it only gets better.

Sean Shank I must have a bad obsession then as I hate when a game in my collection isn't in min condition then again I only own around 500 games spread out though 12 consoles.

Oisin Osborne that’s fine bro, you do you, it’s your collection that you spend your money on, whether you don’t care about condition or value or you totally do, don’t let anyone ever tell you what your collection should be like. I get a lot of hate for being a CD-i collector but it just makes me love it even more lol cheers

I had the same experience. when I started collecting at first I would just buy whatever in whatever condition. Then at some point I got nose picky. Only wanted the best things. Then I I wouldn’t pick something up because of the condition of it. Some time later I still don’t have those items. All because I got nose picky.

As a “retro collector”, I started with and went from collecting things I grew up with or was nostalgic for, to where I am now collecting other consoles and games, like the CD-i And 3DO, from the same time period that I never had and not nostalgic for (besides a3DO commercial I saw), but making new memories now and becoming nostalgic for them in a different way. I’m also one of the lucky ones that still has a lot of games and consoles that I grew up with. I tell ya, not seeing some of that stuff for 20+ years and pulling it out of storage is an amazing feeling, one of the highlights of my life. These physical, material items are special because they literally house memories of a special, simpler time in life.

So after three days of watching everything on games chasers, just wanted to say thanks for the entertainment. I am glad to found you guys, and have fun watching episode one to seventy-two (and all the thing in between). I am a game collector to but not as big as you guys, I have been doing it for about three years. And most on my collection is based on PSX, 2,3,4 and Xbox 360. But after my three day binged, you guys have gotten me my into the older stuff. So once my from a little guy on KZfaq and also a fellow game collector, thank you.

I agree with the last thought. We're all too much linked to our past and nostalgia of old times. Although, that's enough for us and the feelings it brings along with the memories makes all this important to us. Collecting, for me, is also sharing. I am very happy when I can share my games with others and let them play things they don't know about. We're not so many collectors in my region so the social part of gaming and collecting sounds to me as great as the collecting itself. Anyways, thanks for the years of video and inspiration! Great work! I hope you still enjoy making it as much as I enjoy watching it!

I've been a fan for just over a year now, and this was one of your most heartfelt videos until now. What made me want to collect, besides the obvious nostalgia factor, was my mother's untimely death. Before that, like many others, I grew up playing NES, then SNES, then N64 games (yes, I'm a Nintendo fanboy). I still own the 3 consoles, all in perfect working condition, as well as most of my original games. But after she died, I just felt an uncontrollable need to reattach to my past. I simply began to find and buy games that I either played as a kid or that I always wanted and never had. This is my link to the past. Like Jay, I also have an 11-year-old kid (besides a 20 and a 22-year-old as well) and I also gave him the "retro gene", as he loves playing all the old games, watching old cartoons with me (I'm also a huge Transformers and He-Man fan, by the way, Melvor!) and playing with the action figures I kept. So basically, I'm forever attached to this feeling. Through the memories of my childhood, which are now also a part of my child's childhood, I can live on. Thank you for your videos, which always get me in a good mood but, most importantly, always bring a smile to my face.

We (my brother in law & I) started our channel because we came across your channel 4 years ago. We thought that it would be a cool idea to start our collections but with a twist. He would try for a full NTSC set of NES (with some exceptions, I didn’t expect him to spend thousands of dollars on the super rare games). We said if he got close enough I don’t care if he bought repros of some. Me on the other hand I’m aiming for a full ntsc set of the Dreamcast. We made it a competition but got closer while making video and game hunting. Thanks for the inspiration to start loving the hobby.

It was so cool getting to see you guys in person and I was so nervous just to even meet you all. Still have my VIP box and Tag Team Wrestling, which I got from your first season DVD Indiegogo, that you two, Melvor, and Dodongo signed that sits up next to my boxed Earthbound as some of my prized gaming possessions. Probably seemed kind of weird around you guys, cause I really didn't know what to say and was kind of star struck as odd as that may seem to you. Was glad to get a picture with you two though, and AlphaOmegaSin, and hopefully one of these days I can head down to Texas for Retropalooza. Thanks again for being awesome guys and letting me kind of interrupt you filming for the photo. P.S. we need more Dodongo!

I started when my old school friend dropped by my house before he moved interstate and gave me his Atari 2600 and all his games, the same ones I used to go over to his place and play. I then started getting out the computers and consoles I still had, and started hunting, find another one and then another, until I now have over 110 computers and consoles. I love anything gaming, but retro computers, especially the 8 and 16 bit machines are my favourites. Great video guys.

I've always been a gamer. But the collecting itch/addiction started when I went to my first con and bought an OG Gameboy. I wanted it and it was a good price. As time went on, I found myself on ebay or thrift stores buying Gameboy games. I have such an affinity for the Gameboy because when I was younger, it was my first system and I got the system from one place and my mom bought me Link's Awakening as my first game. So, it was nostalgia, and longing to reconnect with my feelings that I had because my mom passed away and having it again made me feel so good. I now own at least 1 of every gameboy except the GBA mini (too expensive). I just like being able to take the system wherever I go and know I'll have fun. Once I'm done, I want to pass my collection onto my son.

Game and toy chasing is A Link to the Past! I began collecting for NES a couple of years ago just because I missed the games of my youth. In this day and age where kids grow up too fast, technology is booming, and there is this desire to force others to give up the things that made people happy because others have done so, I believe that being a collector of anything that gives you certain feelings, reconnects you or keeps you connected to your past its perfectly fine especially on those days where you are feeling down or you feel like you are missing something. We all need time for ourselves, we all need time to rekindle past experiences, there is nothing wrong with that especially when you are not hurting anyone and as Jay put it, being responsible and handling your other obligations. And I agree that having a legacy, passing things down to your children is a great thing. When kids see what made us happy as children, most of they time they take up interest and discover things about themselves and may even join you in the collecting.

Unfortunately my childhood memories are few and scattered. Was always spoiled as a kid, just don't remember it much. In recent history I got back into collecting because of KZfaq channels like this and the community of smaller youtubers that I could share the hobby with. Then once I got into the flea market scene and digging for treasures, the thrill of the hunt really drove me. And now I use KZfaq as my creative outlet so it really checks off a lot of boxes for me. As a dad, I'm a lot more sentimental about this sort of thing and want to make sure my children have the same experiences as I did and plenty of footage to remember it all.
