Frequent cleaning + pee pad + litter + bunnies don't produce that much volume of pee = negligible ammonia any way you slice it

If you have a dog, you can have the dog do the testing too. Dogs have very good noses and if they sniff ammonia, they will wrinkle their nose, pull up their lips in disgust, sneeze and move away from the smell. This is the normal reaction of a dog sniffing ammonia or other toxic gasses. But these strips are very good proof if you don't have a dog for testing.

The ammonia level will presumably be related to the frequency with which you clean the litter box. If you're cleaning it daily, I can't imagine ammonia levels getting anywhere near anything harmful. I'd also be curious to know the result of the test if you were to do the first test again but with the lid closed. Opening the lid before doing the test likely allowed much of the ammonia to escape into the air. Overall, great video!

I agree. I also wonder if that ammonia test is the safe level for HUMANS, not bunnies. bunnies are much smaller and have much more sensitive respiratory tracts. I wonder if the 'harmful' threshold for bunnies is any different.

I've noticed hooded litter boxes are uncomfortable for my bun and I want to share the experience with you, even though it doesn't nesessarily connect to the theme of ammonia. My bunny, Felix, used to suffer from GI stasis twice a year, every big molting season. I couldn't figure out what I did wrong, until I bought a huge (70 cm x 50 cm) litterbox for him on my balcony. Soon, Felix didn't use his hooded litter box anymore at all. I have notised that Felix loves to lie down in his litter box and sometimes eat his hay this way (I place his hay on the bottom of the box, I don't hang them). Now, he only uses this kind of litter box and we haven't had any issues with his stomach ever since. He eats a lot more hay this way and stays healthier. 🥳

With bunnies being so sensitive to smell, I doubt they’d go somewhere smelling too strongly anyway, especially w how ammonia smells 😅 there is higher risk for the bunny to go and pee everywhere in the room rather than him/he getting intoxicated w ammonia 😆

Good experiment. Also, ammonia is lighter than air, so it rises. If someone is very concerned about this, drilling several holes in the top would allow the ammonia to escape the enclosure. 👍

Thank you for finally testing out these litterbox set ups out if they have ammonia in the litterbox area air. I have heard some rabbits get upper respiratory infections from hay dust or litter dust in a covered litterbox which is of course something to still look out for but I think if there is large opening, you reduce the dust in your hay and litter like Carefresh by shaking out it before putting it in and you clean your litter box regularly then I think it is safe. No door flaps is a good idea so the hay dust or litter dust doesn't get trapped ☺

Also wondering what type of bedding you normally use? I’m a new bun mom and have been trying out different litter bedding to see what my rabbit likes. In the past I’ve used aspen bedding (thin wood chips, didn’t like those, not very absorbent) newspaper pelts (pretty good, but hard to find ones without ammonia lockers and I don’t want any added chemicals) and right now it’s rabbit/ferret pelts by carefresh (which I haven’t been happy with as it gives off a weird smell right out of the bag) and next up I’ll try regular carefresh paper. Im curious how you find your bedding, and I read recently rabbits need soft bedding, like hamsters, which isn’t what newspaper or these weird ferret/rabbit pelts provide. I know each rabbit is different and my rabbit still uses the litter even when I change the type, so I don’t think it matters much to him. In which case I personally want to know which is most absorbent. My money is on carefresh paper! But that’s cuz I haven’t tried it yet and haven’t been happy with the others. MAYBE for your NEXT MYTH BUSTER 😉you could test which bedding is most absorbent. I for one would like to know!

As somebody who has owned rabbits for over 14 yrs id say please only get a LARGE hooded litterbox (as big as cinnabuns) with lots of access to outside air and ONLY if you have one bunny. If you have more than one chances of them even wanting to use hooded litter boxes are low. But because of the hay dust and pee and poop it’s just a very small space for all that to be concentrated in. Bunnies have very delicate respiratory systems and over time this can really affect them. But if you’re a single bun or small two bun household this could work. I’d say the risks outweigh the benefits especially if you’re not cleaning litter boxes everyday. You know your bunnies best and I’m sure you have their best interests at heart! ❤

If you open the cover all the ammonia will escape, but that will also happen through the hole but slower. In the trash can there is no hole or something so it will be more yellow

Love the info in this video! I've been researching on rabbit care recently for I'm considering getting a pet rabbit, and your videos have been tremendously helpful in showing me how to care for them properly and what amazing things are possible if we do so. Thank you so very much! As a side note, I think technically the best way to measure the ammonia in the litter cover is by reaching in from CB's entrance without lifting the top lid, as opening it can potentially vent off the ammonia. But ammonia does spread through air very quickly, and the openings of the litter cover are already venting it continuously, so I don't think the test result would have been significantly different anyway.

Hey I love your vids, I’m planning to adopt a bunny as soon as I finish bunnyproofing my house and making sure I got everything the bunny will need to free roam and that the house is secure to her. I’ve literally saw almost every video from your channel and geez you got really good types for someone who’s planning to adopt this little cute baby. I got a question: is your litter box “cover” handmade ? If no where’d you bought it ? I really like the style and usefulness seems kinda good too, my bunny is going to have a room just for her (beyond the full house of course) and I’d love to have a similar one for her

My bun starts thumping at me when he wants his litter box to be cleaned (even if it still looks fresh), and he likes nice smells (for example, he loves everything smelling of lavender) so I think that he would throw a tantrum if his litter box would smell 😂 He has open litter box, but I can't imagine him even going close to dirty one 😂

Would you not need to wait until night once there's the maximum amount of ammonia in it, not open the cover, put your hand right in to the back and also right down close to the bottom where your bunny's head would be to get an accurate reading?

The puppy pads take up the urine, thus neutralize ammonia. Of course this would wear off at some point, maybe after a month or two. Yet why would anybody clean up the litter box only once every 4 - 8 weeks? I grew up with lots of bunnies in a safe to all sides bunny garden.i also had many pets throughout my life. I also used to breed American Bulldogs, so here is what I know from all this: I used cotton textiles in the puppy box, where the puppies were born in and lived in the first 6 weeks together with their mom most of the time. After about 4 weeks they had a safe puppy pen in the garden and the whole puppy room, where they would spend their wake times at. I took the cotton fabric, which was unbleached and otherwise comparable to the textiles used for t-shirts, out for washing two to three times a day, in the very beginning up to six times a day. I then put them inside a bin and as soon as I had enough fabric to fill my washing machine, I would wash it. It was a bit smelly when opening the bin, but not extremely. Once my washing machine for dog things died in the middle of a hot summer, and so I used big plastic trash bags for my puppy box fabrics. I then took them with my car once a week to a washing center in the city to wash. When I opened the trash bags there, they really smelled extremely of ammonia. It literally stung my eyes and nose awfully. But I had had these fabrics in the plastic bags for up to one week and on my way to the city, which took about 1.5 hours, these black plastic trash bags had been sitting in my heated up car. I never experienced any of this when I had access to my washing machine, which would run at least once a day and with the dirty fabrics stored in a closed plastic bin in my cool basement where my laundry room was. I guess it's a matter of confined space, together with no oxygen and heat, that results in higher dose of ammonia. My fabrics were just cotton and no chemicals were involved like they are used with diapers or puppy pads. I probably could have prevented ammonia to rise by soaking the dirty fabrics in closed buckets with water and bleach, just like we used to treat cotton fabrics used as diapers for babies. Don't let others with no experience on certain things concern you. It's very good that you didn't rely on such nonsense, but checked yourself by testing with these strips. If you would have had a dog, you could have used the dog for testing too. I believe that a bunny wouldn't enter the closed litter box if there would be ammonia. The bunny then would probably not use the litter box at all and do it's potty thing in front of the litter box full of ammonia.

I was wondering something. We all know that bunnies like to do their business while eating, that's why it's mandatory to have hay in or near their litterbox. But Cinnabun always eats her veggies in her little tent and gets her dried herbs/pellets on her forage mat. Doesn't she or any other bunny also poo and pee while eating in those areas? I just found THE cutest forage mat online (in the shape of a carrot!) But was wondering if bunnies will get confused when they are only supposed to go potty on their actual litterbox.

This was so great! I don't have a bunny yet but have been doing my research first and I've seen this SO much but the potty house keeps everything so much cleaner. I just wonder if testing with the lid open could change it by much? But like you said, the bunny isn't living in there.

Most rabbits would choose an open litterbox over a hooded one. Hooded litterboxes make them feel unsafe because they only have one entrance, which makes them feel trapped. Don't listen to these KZfaqrs, they use hooded litterboxes for themselves, not their rabbits.

maybe the bunny would enjoy munching on hay open air where she can see Eating hay takes up mist of their day, so is she sitting in that cramped dark space all day long ? You seem to be obsessed aesthetics and all things pretty
@BohoBunMom
@BohoBunMom 7 ай бұрын
Yep, it's 100% about aesthetics and what humans prefer. No rabbit (or cat) would choose a hooded litterbox, and rabbits especially don't like enclosed spaces without multiple escape routes. I don't necessarily like the sight of my bun's litterbox and poo, but he likes it just fine. I use a regular high sided cat litterbox from Walmart. It actually matches his food bowl and bed anyway and he doesn't have to eat in the dark just so I don't have to get offended by the fact that he poops and pees.

@briannashah

Why won't my bun use his hooded litter box only his open high-sided one?
@BohoBunMom
@BohoBunMom 7 ай бұрын
Because rabbits don't like hooded litterboxes, and they're not meant for the rabbits' sake, but for the humans'. Rabbits don't care about privacy when they're pooping. Hooded litterboxes only exist so that humans don't have to see or smell their pets waste. Every person I've ever seen who has both hooded and open litterboxes, their rabbit much prefers the open ones. Hooded litterboxes also don't function as proper hidey houses because they only have one entrance. A rabbit will usually use a hooded box if that's all they have because it's where their hay is, but the fact is that covered litterboxes are in no way meant to benefit the rabbits. I suggest ditching the hooded one.
