I’m not sure they think of me, but I can see the difference clearly. The thing is polite is approachable, where if you’re being mean, people scare and just ignore. Another big difference is the humility, the Japanese are humble and don't tend to show off or attention seek as much. Americans tend to be loud, proud and a little lacking in self awareness (like being loud and blocking paths things like that). Another example: wearing a tiny dress that looks like lingerie and wondering why people are staring at you.

@simonmaduxx6777
@simonmaduxx6777 9 ай бұрын
This right here. I literally just came back from Japan, nice is not a word I would use. ..especially when you start getting deeper in the culture with the immense amount of flakiness. I was taught a term for when Japanese don't want to try hard to do something, but I don't remember it - it's a huge problem in some social situations or trying to grow social relationships with them. The bizarre thing about them is how much some of them can avoid making effort especially socially. But when it comes to their work and goals they're basically machines. It's just so bizarre to me. Then you see thousands of them in their cities having fun and drinking and enjoying each other and you're wondering what the hell is the disconnect. The language barrier is especially brutal if you're a social person from a different culture, you can effectively be blocked out. It is not a good feeling at all. In other cultures you can naturally just go and meet some people and then grow and tend to that garden. With Japanese, you can, it just feels completely different, more like a operation than something natural. It's like trying to twist their arms to get them to do stuff that happens naturally or normally in other cultures. It's not a disconnect, it's just that you're not Japanese... If they don't pull you into their fun and activities etc, then you're going to be sitting on the outside getting genuinely pissed off over time. So yeah nice as definitely not the word. But manners and being polite goes such a long way you can make you feel more peace at mind than other high stress environments like New York City for example.

@simonmaduxx6777
@simonmaduxx6777 9 ай бұрын
@@midulfinger1478 agreed, it is a very big deal and it bleeds into their services at least the general ones like trains being respectful of time and such. Then of course it goes out the windows with ludicrously expensive cabs, absolute bizarre signage and superlimited English once you get outside of Tokyo, the restaurants and places that simply don't care to update their communications to make it easier for others to understand, I mean everything good about Japanese is countered by something either intentionally vague or outright bizarre in disposition towards foreigners. Actually as I think about it, Japan is the only place that I know of that refers to others as foreigners. And other places they just tend to say where you're from You're an American you're a German you're this. In Japan you're not one of us you're a foreigner lol

They ARE polite, but they are most certainly judging you and feeling different on the inside. Edir: For everyone that is so upset and crying "everyone does that!!" you are correct, and I never implied we don't. A lot of people that take an interest in Japan believe for some reason that they are just the nicest people you will meet. They have this odd high standard that they will just be too kind and love foreigners and that's simply not true for the most part. The point I was making is they are not special, nor overly kind, they are HUMAN and are judgmental. A lot (not all) laugh at foreigners and stare in criticism, not wonder.

It's rather similar in the south. At least before roughly 2014. Normally it was considered "southern hospitality" where people were just often nice regardless. Since it felt good to help others and others being helpful if you ever need it. Some may gossip about the situation later to have idle banter worth with friends, Most of them would be genuinely nice since they are often paying it forward due to someone else being nice to them in the past and enjoying the sort of "kind, thoughtful, and helpful" society they had created and think being nice and helpful is fun and fulfilling to make someone else's day better and more enjoyable. Similar societal thing in japan where you just keep up the standard so that it normally feels better. A lot of that stuff sort of got washed to the side once people pushed a more "mind your own business" mentality and saying or doing something only to get something in return. In new york and California, the nicest thing a person will do for you is ignore your existence.

@@pipercity I agree as someone who has lived in the south and spent a fair amount of time in the north. Normally still nice, just less likely to be over the top where you think about the situation later and think "man that person was really nice and I'm glad they helped/went out of their way for me". Especially with a lot of people taking advantage of said situations and being more selfish or just less ability to help, like people used to, in the past. What is the problem? Are you saying that you live in Japan and still want to be treated like a tourist? It's normal to be nice and friendly to tourists because they're not used to Japan. But once you get used to life in Japan, it is only natural that you will be treated strictly by the people around you. That's what it means to live in a different country. This is not limited to Japan.

Nah, she never said “kind” - she says nice three times. Then, he draws the comparison between nice, polite & kind, saying each word is different. She agrees Japanese culture is “polite” but maybe not kind. And she’s actually pretty kind in the way she expresses that, never accusing anyone and giving people the benefit of the doubt A brain she’s got, even tho she dressed like a thot
