That’s a really difficult question. Man U are one of the 3 giants of world football when it comes to capacity to generate revenue, global brand, international fan base and marketability. Liverpool can’t top that. Currently, Liverpool are the more successful, can attract the bigger names and are the more appealing club. Overall I’d have to say United are the bigger club though. If it stays as it is for the next decade then it may shift as Liverpool are the only club in England that can rival them in terms of global appeal. City and Chelsea may have more money but they don’t have the same gravitas as the 2 giants of English football.

It's a bit of a petty argument of my club is bigger than your club. One thing is clear though and that is Man United have always been the media's darlings even if they do get some criticism. Klopp made comments a few years back questioning where United get their money from. Obviously knowing that they are a massive club but any club will struggle if they are not competing in the biggest competitions. A journalist joked years ago that if an investigation on United was done that it would be very interesting and jokes them being a State-owned club. They became successful at the right time when the proper big money came into the game with Sky. I've always found a large portion of their fan base to be casual fans. It's almost fashionable to support United and we're seeing the same thing with City. Always thought that Manchester in general has a lot of strings pulled in its favour. Liverpool on the other hand are one of the world's elite clubs and in my experience have more genuine fans. Everyone knows that there is a lot of hate towards Liverpool and the media has a big part to play in that. Rival fans will point to other events obviously. Having a few ex-Liverpool players in punditry doesn't hide the hatred towards the club. Who's bigger? Both are huge clubs so it's kind of irrelevant. Many things can easily be manipulated. For me Liverpool fan I look at things like - ANFIELD KOP END THE FLAGS, SONGS AND ATMOSPHERE ON BIG EUROPEAN NIGHTS. Check out Talksport, Sky Sports, any UK news papers or the Internet in general and you'll see how they try to sell Man United to the public. All the main stories, whether good or bad, will have United in the headline most of the time. I don't think any club has pumped anywhere near the money as that club in trying to sell itself. I heard many people refer to them as PR-CHESTER UNITED which kind of hits the nail on the head.

A football club's ability to project its appeal and popularity far beyond it's own parochial boundaries has always been a fascinating thing to me. I support Liverpool because I was born in Liverpool and have always lived in Liverpool. I live in an area where lots of LFC staff, managers and players also live whilst they're contracted to the club. I'm quite certain that there exist many Manchester United counterparts. People who were born in Manchester and have always lived there etc. They too, must get to experience what I experience. Namely....they support a football club that represents their "home" city. The place where they were born, the place where they continue to live. People who support either Liverpool or United, but were born in, and reside in....locations which may be tens of thousands of miles away from these respective Cities are a real curiosity to me, I have to be honest. I wonder how on earth they get to establish a fervent bond to club with whom they share no personal (or logical) provenance whatsoever? Who's got the "most" of these kinds of supporters....is....I guess.....the question in hand here? Which club's global outreach affords them the bigger revenue stream from their respective merchandising departments? Speaking as parochial supporter, I guess we don't really care to be brutally honest. It's great to have the money the global fan-base provides, and if that money actually dictated spending power we'd likely be far more concerned about winning the "outreach" war.....but if monitoring Manchester United has taught Liverpool anything...it's taught us that being serial "winners" is the best way to push outreach into global markets. I hate to say it, but the global marketplace are basically viewed as "glory hunters" by parochial supporters. Kids like to associate themselves with winning clubs and winning is what puts a club "on trend" in global markets. Manchester United's halcyon days look to have stalled somewhat. This is bound to put pressure on their ability to accrue fresh support in foreign markets. It's going to be interesting to see how this develops.

The glazers have never spent a penny of their own money EVER. Even when they bought the club, it was never with their own money. Other owners put their own money in (from their own wallet). The glazers buy players with money the club has generated to create "fake value". When a club is valuated, things like player contracts/transfer fees come into play (ie - add to the overall club value). So the glazers do this to get a higher price when they sell shares etc. The money from sold shares etc goes into their pocket (not invested back into the club OR not even to pay off the debt that enabled them to create those shares in the 1st place). So in a roundabout way, the billion spent on players has gone to the Glazers. This is why they don't spend proper money on the actual club (stadium, training ground, recruitment staff etc etc), because they can't "roundabout" those funds into their own pockets. This is also why United can't recover from 'bad transfer buys" and teams like City & Chelsea can. It is now forbidden by the FA for any owner to purchase a club the way the Glazers did, because it ultimately 'sooner or later' cripples the club.
