The USC Trojans and Penn State Nittany Lions start their season with tough tests right out of the gate. USC's battle with LSU in Las Vegas will test the revamped secondary and Penn State's battle at West Virginia will test their defense under 1st year coordinator Tom Allen.
Will these Week 1 matchups set the tone for the 2024 season in Los Angeles and Happy Valley?

I think taking WVU with the points is easy money. I just dont see PSU winning by more than 12 points. Considering all WVU has returning on both sides of the ball + what they added in the portal, and far more healthier going into this game than they were last year, I actually think WVU has a shot at an upset. At the very least a close competitive game. Now Greene has a year under his belt as QB1, now our WR's have a year of experience, now Jaheim White found his rhythm(didnt play vs PSU last year), I think WVU will take pretty healthy steps forward on both sides of the ball. While I love PSU's hire at OC, it may take them a few games to find their timing, and their defense may take a week or two to gel in the new system. While having two new coordinators may play in PSU's favor with limited film for WVU staff, so perhaps it may take WVU a couple possessions to adapt, if PSU come out in step and leverage that question mark. Otherwise if PSU come out and not in sync on the road in Morgantown, this could be one of the rare years with a W beside it vs PSU matchup for WVU. Itll be a tough game to win for WVU, theyll have to all play a great game, get some big 3rd & 4th down conversions, no turnovers, maintain healthy ToP, get some big plays, with strong LB & DB play, but I think our skillset players are much much better now than what they were in the first game of last year. I just dont see PSU winning by more then 10 points, if they win at all. Bet Moneyline + bet WVU points, and if WVU loses they should still cover and the winnings cover losses from moneyline bet, thats how Ill personally pursue it(not advice). Unlike last year, If WVU gets through the fall camp without any serious injuries and go into the game fully loaded, this game could very easily come down to the last possession. Either way, should be a great game that a whole lotta people are looking forward to watching.

Are u on something? There is questions on the D line besides for Abdul Carter and the whole LB room has questions and CB’s are a huge question marks. You need psychiatric help if u really think a team that lost the talent they did and let Michigan run the ball 32 times in a row is gonna be elite is absurd

That was last year..the middle of the line are all grown ass men..5th and 6 yr players with a lot of experience.. maybe if you actually looked at the past few years of recruiting you might realize that these next group of players were higher ranked classes then just left..why do you think they played the 2nd string a lot..to get them some game experience...will there be mistakes? Sure there always are.. so stop being lazy and actually look at these players

I think this Penn State team is nothing to scoff at, especially with new hires. Credit to them, that’ll probably throw us for a loop, but a lot of people tend to count out the Mountaineers. I think that hubris could be Penn State’s downfall, as we kept it close for a while in Happy Valley. This game’s in Morgantown, and WVU has a chance to upset PSU and win its first game in Morgantown against the Nittany Lions since ‘89. Imagine that kind of shock for a moment. WVU is a Big 12 title contender, and possibly a CFP contender, so this will be a good matchup (and imo, should be played more often)! Let’s Go Mountaineers! 💛💙⛰️

@@BigTenTed Good idea for fans but i doubt PSU schedules another OOC P5/4 team given their expanded schedule with the West Coast teams. Expect more MAC teams in State College and no more OOC road games due mainly to loss of revenue at smaller stadiums on the road. Tons of long-time PSU season ticket holders, especially in W. PA, cannot get tickets to the WVU game.

Ted, my concern with the opener against LSWho is what is the “truth” about USC if we win big? I worry that we won’t really know what we have in SC until October The fact is there’s too much credit being given to LSWho as a “great team” when they have huge holes to fill I’m not saying SC will go 11-1 or 10-2 but they might, I think they go 9-3. I do think they will beat LSWho though it might not tell us how good they are Fight On!!

USC and LSU are really similar. Both had really good offenses with a Heisman QB and trash defenses. Both got a new defensive staff. It's going to be a great game.

USC had a bad defense last two years. LSU was terrible on defense as well last season. Both teams hired new defensive staff. Keep it real big ten Ted.

Penn State stole it from USC back in the 70’s and just slowed it down after watching the IH-IO chant and came up with theirs. But it didn’t really take off until the 80’s. There’s an article I keep trying to link from Happy Valley Insider but I think my comment keeps getting flagged every time I try to post it.

As a cheer in the game, USC was first. Penn State adopted "We "Are" as a rally cry against racism in 1946 when they refused to travel to Miami without the entire team (black players not allowed to play on the same field with white players). The game was forfeited. "We Are" became a cheer in the 1970's

As an SC fan i hope everyone sleeps on them and gives them little to no chance. Yes, the bowl game was last season. However that’s about 80% of the team you’ll see lining up against LSU. That was a top 15 defense in Louisville and they got torched. SC has 2 DCs, a Champion FCS HC, and 2 elite d line coaches. They will be very competitive and they’ve gotten significantly bigger this offseason. I think they beat LSU 35-24. I think they’ll lose to Michigan but not in a blowout and they’ll lose to Notre Dame. Wisconsin, @Wash and Penn St are all toss ups in my opinion. I think 10-2 is the ceiling, but 8-4 is the floor

It’s a bit disingenuous of you not to mention that USC has a whole new coaching staff from last year. Alex Grinch was fired. And LSO’s defense was horrible last year as well, and that’s why they fired their defensive staff as well. Fight On.

6:20 of the video might help you. I literally just mentioned Alex Grinch was the DC for the first 2 years of LR's teams at USC. I know he was fired in-season last year.

Penn State is a borderline playoff team at best due to a favorable 2024 schedule. What are their signature wins over the past 3 years? 4 loss Utah, 4 loss Iowa, 4 loss West Virginia? And those PSU teams were arguably better teams than PSU 2024 is shaping up to be.

Dont forget WVU lost their 3 in the middle of the oline so i dont think WVU is going to be as good as some are trying to project. Drew struggled against osu and Michigan but Drew smoked everyone else. 25 TD and 2 int 2600 yards i think was pretty good and i think singleton and Allen are going to go off this year. People need to look up Kerry Collins numbers in the 1994 season arguably the best offense ever at Penn State

Yes we lost Zach Frazier(Center) & Nester(OG), but we have 6 of our starting/rotating 8 OL returning. ((Milum, Rimac, Yates, Malone, Hubbard,) + Weidman) Its not like WVU is playing with inexperienced OL or replacing Zach & Doug with an inexperienced players. Yates played all of last year & the year prior at OG+OT, and he played center during the bowl game vs UNC. Moore(OL coach) has done a great job building quality depth in our OL room, so most people who closely follow the team actually think the OL as a whole/unit should actually slightly improve. WVU returns almost the entire roster from last year. Only losing a few starters total. In regards to returning snap count %'s we rank pretty high + portal additions. Last year for PSU a few of our skillset players did not play in the game as they missed the first few games of the season due to fall camp injuries. Jaheim White being one of them. Combined with it being Greene's first year as QB1& first year for almost all our WR's, which continued to improve as last season progressed. As our offense improved, our defense declined as we were hit hard with injuries to critical players. If WVU ends this upcoming season "not as good" as last year, it wont be because the team hasnt improved, itll be because our schedule is so brutal. Our SoS is currently ranked in the top 10 in the country, so if WVU ends the season with
