I adored Crimson Peak, I would really recommend it to you, just go in knowing it’s a gothic romance and not a real horror flick. I would also like to add that I think Chastain’s character had a really good in story reason for being stuck about 10 years earlier, more than just the fact that they’re poor. I won’t spoil it, but I do believe an event in her life made her unable to move past it despite the world changing around her.
@emilyvanda5513

exactly! I was just going to say something similar. It makes perfect sense that Chastain would be wearing old clothes because everything about the house and their circumstances. It's cool that a costumer would specifically go for that kind of detail and it also helped make the character more dramatic.

That's what I thought hearing her costumes were old-fashioned for the time. It's a creepy detail in the film that I missed (but now I'm aware of it thanks to Karolina). I also loved the film. It's all about building the atmosphere, and it does a great job re-using tropes from classic Gothic fiction. Most of the bad reviews are probably from people who expected a typical Hollywood horror flick and didn't really get it. And I'm not saying that because I think everyone who disagrees with me must not understand what they're talking about-each time I read reviews of something that does not follow the most mainstream conventions, I find pieces by people who completely miss the point.

Crimson Peak was pretty great, actually. People who expected it to be a horror film didn't like it, but that was a problem with marketing. In reality it's pure gothic romance, drawing from books/films like Jane Eyre and Rebecca more than anything. You should give it a shot, I bet you'd like it.

jessica chastain was supposed to be a „poor“ rich in crimson peak. it was even mentioned that their clothes were „well sawn, but old fashioned“. they didn‘t have the money to buy new stuff that would have measured up to their status.
5 жыл бұрын
from a historical point of view it doesn’t make sense though for the clothes to be 15 years old. no one would wear them. a couple of years difference would be a maximum (usually they would refashion the clothes tho to make them look more fashionable). and since I’m judging historical accuracy in here, that’s a no-no!

@phoenixmorris-board8321
@phoenixmorris-board8321 5 жыл бұрын
To have their clothes that much older definitely does lower the accuracy, then, but I'm still glad they did it. If it had been only a couple of years difference, it would have been harder for me to notice the symbolism they were trying to convey. Even if they went in with a thorough knowledge of the fashions of the time, I don't think realism was their top priority. It was more like a historical fantasy
@phoenixmorris-board8321
@phoenixmorris-board8321 5 жыл бұрын
Also, it wasn't just the fact that they couldn't afford new clothes. I got the impression that it also represented being stuck in the past, wearing old clothes that had been in their family for generations, clinging onto their legacy. In spite of how people would look down on them for being dated.

Hey! I just wanted to say that I loved Crimson Peak and one of the reasons it didn't get very good reviews is that it was marketed as a horror film, and it isn't. Guillermo del Toro wanted to make a gothic romance film, much in the line of The Red Shoes or even Bram Stoker's Dracula. It was marketed as horror and is not...scary? It's just beautifully made and the pace is that of a tale more than any horror (or ar least modern horror) films. You should watch it, it's lovely

I stopped watching halfway through season 1 because the costumes just irritate me. There’s this one scene with Kenna and she’s trying to find a suitor. And nobody in their right mind would name their kid Bash, especially in that century. His presence was the crowning moment of "ohhhhh god i need to get the alcohol and try to survive this sh*t". And the fact that they took away almost all the facts just to appeal to teenage gWoArLs, because apparently history isn't the first thing on their minds- On behalf of a good portion of teenage girls, no. Just...no.
@carag2567
@carag2567 10 ай бұрын
@@ortezac.5339Okay so. "Bash" was a nickname for Sebastian. King Henry and Diane de Poirtiers did not literally name their child Bash, mostly because they did not have any children. Bash is a made up character for the series. Understanding that this show played fast and loose with the costumes and obviously manufactured storylines that just never happened, it does do a relatively decent job of laying out the events of the life of Mary Queen of Scots in chronological order while engaging with a youthful audience. If Reign sparked the interest of this demographic and sent them in search of more knowledge, then I call that a win.

The puffed sleeves you mention are in the original book by Lucy Maud Montgomery, who set the stories in her lifetime. Whether the tv adaptations chose the right kind of puffs is outside my expertise. Gauging the time of the stories is also difficult, since in the last of the novels Anne's son goes off to fight in WWI. (The TV adaptation royally screwed up the 3rd movie) The number and order of Anne's children jumps around a bit in the last few books, so it's just weird.

I'm pretty sure that when Victoria wears the yellow dress she isn't actually queen yet, and they probably made the costumes she wears early on quite girly to emphasise her youth, especially since Emily blunt was not 18!

Agreed! Victoria lived under strict control from her mother, the Duchess of Kent, and Sir John Conroy. They had a great say in what she was allowed to wear and not. 'The Kensington System' was designed to shield Victoria from anything that could compromise her mother's ability to be a regent in her daughter's place when she turned eighteen/ when the king eventually died. I think the lace and all the frilly fabrics really represent the absolute control they held over Victoria from her birth to her uncle's death, which in my opinion works really well! The system thankfully didn't work in her mother's favour though.

Seconded! Although Les Mis fandom is full of historical fashion people who have already gone through the costumes in multiple adaptations on Tumblr lol. I'd still like to hear Karolina's comments though. General opinion seems to be that the 2012 movie had good costumes and the new BBC miniseries does not (based on promo pictures and the trailer). I think one of the most accurate examples is the 1964 Italian miniseries (I Miserabili) though. It especially seemed to go all the way with 1830's women's fashion, everything looks appropriately ridiculous and poofy and the hair sure is doing its thing... Edit: the French 1934 trilogy was also good, I think

I haven’t seen it but isn’t it supposed to be like that? It’s a movie musical where they tend to go for a more fantastical style than accuracy which I think is fine. A lot of historically placed movie musicals do it and I personally love the theatricality of it
@kyleg3588

The city itself doesn't make sense. For some reason they use a turn-of-the-century building (the Flatiron Building) in the opening scene. He was dead before the Flatiron was even approved. The vast majority of the movie's plot should take place between 1840 and 1868 (the years Barnum's American Museum stood). The circus that bore his name was not his idea. He was asked to come on as a business partner because of his name recognition and business ties. Zac Efron's character is completely fictitious. He never had an affair with Jenny Lind. The whole thing is not what I would call worth looking at historically.

@@kyleg3588 If you look at a lot of movies with historical settings the majority of them are inaccurate in some fashion. The Duchess tells the story of Georgiana a lot differently than how it actually happened but it's still a great movie and gorgeous to look at so I can forgive it. Liberties and artistic license will always be a factor in these movies. The Greatest Showman is also a kid's movie so they're not really going to spend a lot of time on accuracy because kids aren't going to care and the parents probably won't either. Books and movies that feature historical figures in their own separate fictional universe get made all the time so this really is not that different. And again, it's a musical so it's supposed to be fantastical and bright and eye catching

Victoria's pale yellow dress was worn at the King's birthday party. She was not queen yet. I think they consciously put her in a pale dress to emphasize that she was 17/18, and to contrast with her mother. It's pale and yellow and sweet because she's innocent and young...yet about to become Queen.

Crimsom Peak is amazing. It's so beautifully made and it reminds me so much to Poe's short stories. It's not modern horror it's more like classic eerie style I don't know. About Jessica Chastain's character I think she might be wearing dresses that belonged to her mother? Just a theory. Anyway I really recommend it.

These descriptions of the fashions are so detailed, its amazing! You point out things I never even noticed before. I just wanted to say that Crimson Peak was set in 1901, with the First half being in America and the second in England, so I'm assuming the fashions also differed based on location at the time. I do see that chastain's character was outdated nonetheless, but I think it was set that way rather than showing her altering the old clothing into something more modern so as to make it more obvious to the audience that she's wearing her mother's clothes. (SPOILER) Lucille had also spent time in an asylum before that, so her mental issues and being out of contact with the outside world for so long probably also had an impact. The interview with the fashion designer also says that she chose that style to tell a story through the clothing and represent each character through what they were wearing. She tells a story of the differences and changes within the characters through the clothing they are shown wearing.

I think the simplicity of Young Victoria's dresses could be explained by Victoria's sheltering as a child from the outside world; by the start of the film she has basically no friends because she'd never been allowed to interact with others. Victoria's mother and comptroller were actively trying to undermine the Queen's public image to seize administrative power from her, so I have a feeling her fashion was quite boring/underwhelming at the start.

What I understand about Crimson Peak's fashion is that they're suppossedly impoverished aristocrats who couldn't afford fashions, so Chastain is wearing at least her mother's wardrobe, which is Victorian, compared to more Modern Edwardian fashion of Mia.

Crimson peak is my favorite movie🖤 so beautiful. Also Jessica’s character wears costumes a decade earlier because she and her brother have run out of money so she’s wearing old clothes that are formal enough to keep up appearances but very outdated. The attention to detail with that actually really impressed me.
