I applied to an HBCU and a PWI. The HBCU never reached out after I sent my application and information. The PWI reached out 24 hours and I'm graduating in May.

And the USC team was doing HBCU style majorette not the European Majorette. So YES HBCU majorette started at HBCUs - self explanatory. HBCU majorette is a distinctively different style of dance that whatever you're thinking of. 🤔

@@PanAfricanist This is very true, but it's also inevitable. Are we supposed to stop being "black" in spaces where we aren't prominent in order to keep our culture ours? If so, then is it really ours if we can't be ourselves in whatever space we're in? That doesn't make sense. FYI, dance teams are big in the hbcu world. That's one of the main reasons fans go to the games is because of them and the bands. If you attended an hbcu you would know this. They are also known as majorettes but mainly identified as dancers at hbcus. Majorettes is more appropriate for high school.

@@RJ25255 I attended Jackson State University. Home of the Sonic Boom of the South! Our dance team is known as the J-Settes, not majorettes. They are dancers. In addition, I was preparing to become the majorette..baton twirler, during my sophomore year in school. Anything else you have to say?

@@gingersnaps997 ma'am I graduated from txsu so I'm very aware who the Jsettes are. Just like ours is called the motion. Their style is still considered majorette style. Majorettes term is better used in high schools and pwis with the batons and twirling.

The term is now formally Majorette Dance. Where Shirley Middleton Blakely at JSU had a vision was for young ladies who were originally majorettes to become dancers in the early 70's. Some eventually decided to put down their batons and just dance. Some majorette dancers like the Golden Delights of NC A&T still incorporate baton twirling in their dancing.

That's a big problem with some of our Black people we are to accepting and sharing and then cry when the culture is appropriated. Vivica is right don't introduce HBCU dance to an PWI.

Then try again next year. Go to a community college and then transfer. HBCUs are not turning down people that qualify. They need the funding. If you don’t get it, then it’s not intended for you and that’s okay. Forcing something for selfish reasons can have a negative impact on the majority. Js

@@ensabahnur3104 there’s a 107 HBCUs in the states. I’m sure she could find one that would accept her… especially considering she got into one of the most competitive schools in the nation. Secondly, I never said take a break, I said attend a community college to build your transcript. Most universities prioritize transfers before high schoolers. Regardless, she chose the PWI, not the HBCU which is perfectly fine, but don’t go taking away one of few things that are unique to HBCUs, reducing the appeal.

I think the issue is the word "Majorette". The dancing girls are just that...dancers. They are part of the dance team. Majorettes are baton twirlers.

I think they are refering to the style of dance and not the majorette per se. The style is done at HBCU's and not at PWI. Every school has dance teams.

Each has their own lane, but sometimes word usage changes over a period of time. Sounds like they are now calling a particular style of team dancing "majorette". Your statement is very one sided and you can't generalize HBCUs for being party schools. I have attended both, HBCU and PWI. I could easily say Auburn is way more of a party school than Tuskegee TU, or Alabama State ASU (for example) but your statement serves no purpose. Let's not use the "bad reputation" as an excuse to make HBCUs look less reputable than PWIs. You can only speak from your perspective and cannot say (some black students don't go to HBCUs because they are party schools) they can speak on their own experience. If you only went to a PWI that is totally fine, but to put HBCUs in a negative light (because of what you assume other people think) isn't a very well thought out statement. It totally fine to go to either HBCU or PWI, every school has their strengths and weaknesses. We even have the Black Ivy League schools (look them up if you don't know) We have to remember that while times have changed (somewhat) we weren't allowed to attend PWIs at one point in time, so we created our own colleges. Things have definitely gotten better though. PWIs (to this day) still have to meet diversity quotas in order to receive certain extra funding and tax credits. At the end of the day, I love both and would *NEVER* knock one over the other by saying _"some HBCUs are party schools therefore they have a bad reputation"_ you can find a party atmoshpere anywhere at any school if you are looking for it. People go to college for an education, and people will go to the best option (whether it's financial reason, distance, a particular degree program.) So let's not knock any school when it comes to higher education, especially for HBCUs when they were created out of necessity. ❤️☺️

Also look up a list of schools that have lost accreditation and see how many HBCUs are on any of those lists. You might have heard about Morris Brown (which they got it back!) 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Or maybe one or two others, but those lists show majority 99.5% were PWIs sooooo..................

Exactly. HBCUs didn't offer my major either. Plus, there were none close to me and I wasn't going across the country just to attend an HBCU that didn't even offer my major. I went to all black schools my whole life before college, so it's not like I'm anti-black. This is a ridiculous argument and unnecessary division.

I kinda get what Vivica is saying like why go to a school that is 5 percent black if you want the black experience. So many Cali folks got to hbcus because we are used to living in towns where we are less than 10% of the population. But being a majorette isnt a exclusively hbcu thing.

We have ONE Black Hospital. One. Love the culture of HBCUs but how many students are waiting for Student Loan Forgiveness? How many have started businesses that lead to franchises for generations to come but instead sit by the phone waiting for American companies to call for employment. Why are many of the professors at HBCUs not of color. Of all the graduates over the years the college is not bringing them back to tenure them? We will have to shine where we can and an HBCU is not always the answer. 😞 Kudos for these young women for doing what they love where they are - just happens to be at a university that is not an HBCU.

Or even want to go as they been to predominately black schools from elementary-high school. And it’s nothing wrong with that!
