Just the restrictions on hard drives from Synology is enough to make me buy QNAP when I upgrade. The much better hardware QNAP offers is just awesome too

In March 2017, I bought a QNAP TS-453A together with 4 Western Digital Red Plus WD40EFRX (each 4 TB capacity respectively). NAS is configured to operate the HDs in a RAID 10 setup, resulting in 8 TB effective storage capacity (2x8 TB mirrored). I use the NAS on a daily basis and quite intensely. During more than 6 years of continuous operation I never ever experienced a single issue. Software updates have always worked extremely smooth. If I would have to replace it for any reason, I will buy the same brand again.

QNAP should have within their security panel, a menu option to disconnect the NAS from the internet that then does the behind the scenes adjustments for consumers who don’t know how to do it themselves.

Tbh I completely agree with this. Weirdly, to my mind, only ONE turnkey NAS provider actually has this, and it's Terramaster (isolation mode). I think it's fantastically complex in reality to provide this without inadvertently breaking a bunch of things (everyone's setup is different)..but it does exist.

QNAP TS-873A owner from about 1 month. After a few months of research I choosed platform with more hardware support and possibility to change o/s if I needed. I added 2x nvme in ZFS mirror for o/s and software and GPU for plex transcoding. Rock solid, fast and thank's to second PCI-E slot - ready for 10Gb/s networking.

QNAP hardware is really impressive compared to the other brands, which makes it a great option for sideloading a different OS for better security and functionality.

Not really... My qnap costs me more than 400€ which is the cost of a computer with more CPU power and RAM than my NAS. The problem is not only that, is the hardware... there is a problem in the SATA controller board caused by a low quality component wich breaks a Mosfet Transistor and then a disk starts to fail. This is a realibility problem because the RAID goes to a dangerous state, and expensive because the controller board is not sold and you have to buy a new entire NAS just for a 1€ component. Luckily (or not), the problem is too common and happens in more than one model, so there are guides to troubleshoot the problem and fix it, if you have electronics knowledge and a welder of course.

@@Danixu86The Mosfet was a big issue on the early TVS 400 series. I still have one but it’s usually. Upgraded to a QNAP 1288 series with Xenon i9 processor. Best NAS I’ve owned so far.

I have been absorbing as much as I can from both of you primarily in preparation for my first NAS to handle the many TB of stuff we have laying about, and crazy, but I'm now gravitating toward TrueNAS heavily. Mainly I see a line where in the 4-5 bay there is no way you can build it for their price, but 10 and up? You can blow it away if you want the good stuff. And that's where I think I'm going, a 10 drive Node 804, half populated RaidZ2 and big drives, then the other half when needed. Also, I'm picking up here and there where Synology seems to be going more and more proprietary even with drives, so I'm not walking down that street. You all do a great service to the community that wants to know as much as possible before committing to their purchase. I appreciate it.

Happy using the QNAP TVS-882 as our home media server and storage ( home cloud) it serves music, different video sources to multiple televisions, phones, ipads using ROKU - PLEX. Learning new things to do with this nas all the time, thanks nas compares, just wanted to add that this machine has been running since 2019 other then reboot for updates. No issues

Qnap isn’t perfect but if you know what you are doing and are capable of protecting yourself, it’s a great NAS. For example, I had an RMA for a TVS 672 that failed and just got out of warranty. QNAP replaced it with a newer model in about 3 weeks. Software wise, It is solid and has not cause me any other problems.

They get my vote bought a broken Qnap TVS 472XT from my local auction auction for $350. I wanted to see if I could troubleshoot it. Turns out it was a known motherboard issue that had an extended warranty and I warrantied it since nobody did and rma it. Sent them a picture they wanted paid the shipping and they sent me a brand new one in 3 weeks. I lucked out on the process and buy. Love it and it is vital to have in today's world. Company got my respect.

I normally go with Synology, but I have been disappointed that even with current generation products, they are still shipping 1GbE ports, especially on their lower end NASes where you can't upgrade or add other networking via USB or PCIe. Higher end devices is fine where you can slide in a PCIe expansion card. So, this time around, I'm going with the 4-bay QNAP (TS-462) - I love that it comes with 2.5 GbE out of the box _and_ can be upgraded to 10G via USB _or_ PCIe. Of course, I'm concerned about the security aspects too, so I'll be keeping the Internet access limited to it.

Amazing video!! I have really enjoyed it! Great topics well (and honestly) covered. Two of the (if not the) best content creators regarding NAS technology in a kind of 'face-off' discussion, sharing their views on a very interesting and current subject. I am a happy QNAP NAS user but also admire the Synology brand and products, and admit that they are certainly superior at certain regards (QNAP also is at others). P.D: In my case I only really miss BTRFS and SHR. I wish I could enjoy them both on my QNAP.

I have two Synology NAS devices and one QNAP. The QNAP is used for my movie library and Emby because of the Intel I-5 processor. I also use it for my Synology, PC and server backups. There is no access to it from the internet. One Synology is used for real life activities and the other is used for miscellaneous activities. My oldest Synology is 13 years old (DS1813+) and has never had a problem. The QNAP failed and it was like pulling teeth to find out if it could be repaired. It turned out that they had to extend the warranty because of a major problem and I managed to get it repaired, but it cost me an arm and a leg for shipping. I love my Synology’s and have a love/hate with my QNAP.

Qnap hardware is impressive, But will made an excellent point of when has your unit ever been limited by the cpu? I don’t run a bunch of VM’s but I use my DS920+ daily for work for file sharing and use it as my media server streaming music and movies and the cpu has never slowed it down. When you look at the CPU numbers it sounds a little underwhelming. But that J4125 runs that little unit very well. I’m not sure I’d ever need more. I am disappointed in the lack of 2.5gbe but it looks like the new smb multichannel is gonna fix that issue.

I just bought a QNAP today! It's a TS-433, replacing my old TS-419P II, after 13 years, still running solid today. And since I care about my data, I never exposed it to the internet and behind a 2nd router. And with the new one, I still won't do that, no matter how secure it is! That being said, (being 25 years in IT), I do want to research the new possibilities it has, but nothing crazy. I will leave that to the crazy people.

Chciałbym się poradzić. Potrzebuję nasa do ogromnej ilości danych. Miliony zdjęć ale także kopie zapasowe i paczki danych. Ewentualnie potrzebuję rozwiązania do serwerów bazodanowych. Czy taki qnap sprosta zadaniu? CZy będzie w stanie indeksować i przeszukiwać te miliony plików w optymalnym czasie?

In the QNAP community, it seems like the usual advice to newcomers seems to always be to lock everything down all the time. Don't use the built-in tunneling (The equivalent to Synology QuickConnect, I think?), don't use upnp, don't port forward, don't open the router, don't do this, don't do that- and sometimes I have to wonder, how many of these features are too much of a risk because of qnap specifically?

This is at the core of the problem with QNAP for me, its truly hard to know what the real dangers, along with their severity, are. QNAP's closed door - no information - policy on the security front makes it really impossible to know. This is not to say QNAP doesn't have a place… it's just not at the front door for me. There are plenty of things one can do to minimise risk from the internet though. Three biggies for me are a) managing your modem to keep as many incoming connections stopped at the modem as possible b) managing the NAS' firewall such that if an intruder can't get past the firewall it matters little if how secure the software is (ok, don't ever rely on such thinking but its a good place to have your mindset to get your firewall as strict as possible) and c) stay well clear of using admin passwords on both your NAS and client devices and enable 2FA with a 12-character or longer non-simple password. FWIW, you should probably 2FA every account. Admin accounts are for admin tasks only… period! And don't be saving it in Chrome! You don't wear your nice clothes to do the yard work so just the same you don't use admin accounts for every day usage.

I need a roughly 20TB SSD/M.2/other node to serve iSCSI luns supporting a VMware cluster of shared storage for VM's which support failover/fault-tolerance. This is for a SMB who runs multiple VMware ESXi hosts in a clustered configuration. Im looking for what type of device will provide a fault-tolerant and high performance storage solution for shared storage. I don't know if a 10GBe iSCSI network is sufficient or if perhaps aggregated 10GBe or 25GBe might be better. Can you suggest any products to look at?

Ive got a QNAP TS-1290FX and have spent 6 or more weeks trying to get QNAP to tell me why it cant do 100 Gb/s with the optional 100Gb NIC they recommend for it. No answers from them whastoever. I can get about 20 Gb/s read and 55 Gb/s write (max). I've tried different NICs, PCI slots, etc etc. I could write a book with all the troubleshooting I've done. Suffice it to say, it seems to me the limiting factor here is that QuTs Hero 5.0.x or even 5.1 does NOT support RDMA (SMB Direct). Without that capability, 100G is worthless, or unachievable. Will mentioned putting TrueNAS on the QNAP box. Does TrueNAS support RDMA (SMB Direct)? Will I be able to break the bottleneck with that?

22:57 depending on what you mean by "actual linux exploit", this isn't the kernel but shellshock was pretty bad. i'd be surprised if nas boxes of the time (and probably some still now!) weren't affected by it in some severe way

I bought a QNAP 672XT in 2019 and loved it at first but after having almost all of my files locked with one of the ransomware attacks and now the motherboard failing out of warranty (even though they apparently knew of the hardware problem and a lot of people have had the same issue) I am done with this company and will never use their products. But my only problem is that I need to get some of the files off of my drives... anyone have any suggestions on how to do that without using a QNAP? I'd love to see a video on that! :)

So if you have a slightly older QNAP NAS what would be your recommendation? There is no m.2 or nvme drive in my unit, but I could get a pcie card and m.2 drive and then install TrueNas core. But if I don't want to shell out money for more hardware, Unraid seems to be my only option, unless I want to waste a 4TB drive to run a simple OS. I have the system about as locked down as possible without it simply being unplugged. So what would be your advise?

I had bought QNAP once and after a year the unit failed. The reason it failed was because QNAP used a part with a known problem. They refused to fix it under warranty. I will NEVER buy QNAP again. I am now using ASUStore and I am happy with it .

Everyone knows that iPhone is more controlled and hack-safer than Android. However, Android market is still strong. QNAP didn't do wrong. They chose flexible ocean instead of an aquarium. Synology just follows Apple's way. All the proprietary components are convenient but ridiculously expensive.

How big is the risk of getting hacked with a QNAP anno 2023, if the only online feature I would use is the ability for the NAS to search for and install QNAP updates ? Currently I'm using a very cheap Synology 2 bay 214j. I've never felt the need for online services and I don't need this from my future NAS either. My NAS's only purpose is to backup my PC data drives and present movies and mp3's on a SMB Shared Folder to a local VLAN. Currently I'm only allowing RFC1918 ranges to use the NAS active services.

I have both QNAP and Synology. QNAP for hardware is above Synology but I definitely trust Synology software more. QNAP’s security is awful. I don’t trust their security so my QNAP NAS has restricted or no internet access. I would not trust any other QNAP product. Will look at TrueNAS or another NAS software solution. Great conversation. 28:20 you absolutely can take responsibility for that as a developer. if the credentials are still set to their default value, refuse to enable the internet access feature, with a warning explaining why they need a strong password. if you're selling a consumer product like this you need to proactively guard against at least the most obviously dangerous misconfigurations. if the user says "fine, i'll change the password to admin1", then that's less your problem (although really, the minimum should be to check the password against the wikipedia top 10k password list, not just the default). but this is all missing the forest for the trees, why is the default insecure in the first place? this is a solved problem, you just give each device a unique and secure default password, like wifi router manufacturers have already been doing for years.

Nope, I had a horrible experience when QNAP didn't uphold my warranty. They couldn't sort out the issue with the channel partner and/or reseller and I was left with a woefully inadequate cash refund on a unit that failed under warranty. I'm really sorry to harp on this, I am, but I will not consider QNAP ever again. It's an expensive thing to invest in and the last thing I wanted was my drives gathering dust on my desk cause QNAP couldn't sort it out.

It's a shame that they do not react to the vulnerabilities sooner. Apart from that have to give credit to their helpdesk for fixing enterprise NAS issues very rapidly and pushing fixed FWs out the very same day.

Nice talk! I'm a home user of QNAP. I've had two different 2-bay models throughout the last ten years. I realized how poor QNAP public disclosure policy is when I got affected by the Intel bug concerning LPC booting problem that affects diverse processors including the Celeron J1900 my QNAP TS-253-Pro has. Synology reported it in a bulletining and extended the warranty of the concerned products for one year. I applied the resistor workaround to my NAS and so I am using it today until it dies ”forever”. Therefore I start to consider switching to Synology and downsize my solution to a 1-bay only since I have a OneDrive subscription. There are sill a couple of things I want to store on-prem before shoveling them up in the cloud. When comparing what Synology and QNAP offer as I write then, my ”temptation” goes back to QNAP: QNAP TS-133: ARM 4-core Cortex-A55 1.8GHz (64-bit) 2GB DDR4 RAM Synology DS-118: Realtek RTD1296 4-core 1.4 GHz (64-bit) 1GB DDR4 RAM Or… going for TrueNAS.

Don't do it... I have one and I am not happy with the hardware and the software. It's slow, with low memory compared with a custom computer of the same cost, and the software is not the best. One day I was near to loose all my data just rebooting the NAS (there was no errors, no bad shutdowns, nothing...), and thankfully after some hours fighting against the NAS I was able to recover the RAID and the data. Also I had to fix a common problem in the SATA controller board, thanks to my electronics knowledge and some internet guides (seems to be a common problem, and in more than one model). If I were not able, then the NAS would have been converted into a good paperweight because the board is not sold separately (is not the main board). I don't see this NAS as a good system. Is not the worst, but doesn't worth the money they costs. The best you can do is to buy an small PC box with the required space for the HDD drives you want, buy the required basic components (motherboard, CPU, Memory...), and install TrueNas on it... Got my QNAP up for sale atm and keep thinking is Synology actually better.. their closed hardware is getting more frustrating and quality of the hardware isn’t as good.

I'm never going back to Synology until the company starts taken care of their clients and stop squeezing every last nickel for even the most basic stuff and releasing new hardware that is already 4 years old. They have also been taken away a lot of features and leaving many apps stale on the vine, funny never hear about that. If you know what your doing in IT and can read, QNAP is tough to beat regardless of what this video claims. This video was really a hatchet job at best, normally Robbie is very reliable but asking a huge Synology person who built his wealth around it about the competition is just so self serving, a way over the top fan boy session for my tastes. If you don't have a good hardware firewall and the proper setup, sure Synology will be a better bet. If you have a good firewall and watch what is going on, QNAP does it just fine and with a good value.

I agree re it being setup correctly, mine is sat behind a Sophos XG or pfsense unit. QNAP’s security rep isn’t great though.

@@mikescott4008 Sure, QNAP was not good a year ago for sure, but with all the latest updates and the little talked about bounty (SR didn't even know about it in the video, one where he was discussing if you want to buy a QNAP total LOL), they have made very solid improvements to the device. Using the latest beta is very different than one year ago. If they made this video a year ago with a real person who actually uses and follows QNAP, it would have hit better with me for sure...

NEVER AGAIN. THE WORST! Want me to ship unit for repair to TAIWAN! I'm in Australia - $400 in shipping alone, plus $2k to replace a backplane because they REFUSE to sell the main spare parts to local dealers... so a simple $400 part is a ridiculous mission. Service centers response. Bad Luck

Synology fanboys are a dime a dozen. People who can set up a hardened QNAP are rare. Looks like there is a market for QNAP consulting.

I recommend against home users getting a nas. What’s wrong with regular backups. Nas requires special hardware to retrieve data. And you have no backup motherboard. Power supply is poor quality. Qnap has 3 different operating systems that are incompatible with each other. Naps is dead

After watching this, I am NEVER considering buying anything from QNAP... And the more I watch your videos, and congrats, they are always great, the LESS I want a prebuilt NAS. IMHO I can put together something much better myself, top notch hardware (much better than any units I've seen you review), best bang for my buck. Then I just slam TrueNAS on top of it and I'm good to go...! Anyways, thanks for all the great quality content you put out there!!!

I disagree portforwarding isnt the problem. The problem is using specifig ports. It is no problem to open the smb port to the internet when i dont use smb. The thing is you really should know what services you want to use on the internet.

Well at least QNAP reacted to a situation and by the evidence in QTS (and the security bounty) did something about it. Synology hasn't reacted to any of their clients, so totally tone def. The 423 is just hilarious and no amount rah rah speeches will change the fact of what it is. No one I know likes Synology these days and many are switching to QNAP/Dell/Truenas at least in my circles. Synology can bury their head in the sand and use their consultants to keep handing out the coolaid if they want... They had a great thing, where they could milk the cow and still sell and make a good buck, but they went to far and pushed just a bit too much and don't seem to care. If they would have invested in a ZFS solution, moving a bit with the times with offering realistic hardware, and strategically decided not to SQUEEZE all the time and give a break to the users a bit. They would be better in my book anyways.

The main reason to me right now is that new Synology NAS are (official) compatible only with Synology's hard drives, which are very expensive and hard to find. If you use any other brand will lose any support. Bad decision....

Qnap is really terribly bad. In build quality and firmware. Lost all my data three times already. Stay far away from it.

Thanks so much Rob and Will for doing these deep dives. I really like how much you two explain the concepts in as much of a non jargon manner as possible. True a person has to have a basic understanding of technology but a novice such as myself learns so much from your videos. I agree with @YEEZY_25, please increase the number of videos you two do together. As a challenge: do a video with Will, Eddie,Tom (Lawrence Systems), and yourself. Topic does not matter … it will be awesome.
