Let's take a look at what's real and fake on a 1994-1998 Mustang

Great video. These vent questions are what keep me up at night. I hate fake vents on cars.

My '83 Capri had a fake real hood scoop, same design on the '82 mustang. It had the hole in the hood underneath it but a block off plate for the intake grate. So plate removed and some real grate with a little foam around the hole with a open edge filter. Bam, ram air scoop. Made it really real.

Sorry about the re-upload for the 8 of you who watched this last night 😁 you're awesome! I noticed a small editing error that was going to make me crazy if I didn't fix it.

On my 97 i actually opened up the hood vent more before i changed out my hood for a gr40 one. Always contemplated opening up the side duct on the 97 like the 94/95

This reminds me of my two Fiat 127's They come from the factory with hood vents, a little behind the middle of the hood, about where a Subie has its scoop You could get several different kind of hood scoop designs (of which I actually own 4, including a protruding naca duct?) Those vents and scoops have an actual purpose, they supply the air for the heater/blower So, what happens when you put one of my very stylish scoop on the vent? Ram air intake in your heater/blower, so when you travel at 100km/h you get breeze through your (only two in the middle of the f-ing dash) with no way to stop it! Great pizza engineering!

I could be wrong. I heard it's not directly for daily drivers. It's for race modification ready. Other guess. The blocked off vent models probably solved the lift effect from static air pressure in the wheel well. Previously solved by channeling air into the well via the vents.
@martienthestarАй бұрын
I like the race modification ready idea Butt, what percentage of those mustangs ended up on a track with the vents used for rear brake cooling?
@daveballard8673Ай бұрын
The function of vents could be to simply garner more sales.

Sounds functional if you say it like that

About those hood vents - they're pretty far back on the hood which likely puts them in the area of the high-pressure air at the base of the windshield. That usually means that air would be entering the back of the engine compartment through them, which you don't necessarily want happening due to the increased air pressure at the back reducing the amount of air flowing in through the radiator at the front of the engine bay (makes sense given there's essentially a check valve on one of them to prevent that). The direction of the check valve would indicate they're actually there to help exhaust air from under the hood, right?
@shoveIАй бұрын
I've considered doing the yarn trick with them, at least on the V6 that doesn't have the check valves. I don't know how easily the perforated grill comes out but if a piece of yarn taped under the hood and dangling out the top stays out, that indicates air is moving outward and if it gets sucked in that indicates air is moving inward. Anecdotally if I'm cruising at 30-60mph on a cool day I can feel a very obvious and consistent pocket of warm air just above the side mirror, but there's no way of telling if that's coming out of the wheel well, the cowl or the hood vent and if I put a piece of tape over the vent it might answer that question... and not be demonstrable for the internet. Being real these vents are probably all super meaningless on a lightly driven car in the first place but most things in life are meaningless if you suck the fun out of them hard enough 😁

make smoke in engine compartment to see if they draw air(pressure),the stream of air going around the a pillars probably pull air out from engine compartment(heat but mostly pressure,aerodynamics),and at the rear those work from the boundary layer of the tire rotating(top of tire travels twice the speed of car),the louver is aimed in rotational sence so the air carried by rotation passes by it and creates a negative pressure, probably to draw air in area of less consequence than all around wheel opening , but (again)to balance pressure in wheel well...

I've uploaded a new video with silly yarn tricks to find out what the hood vents do!

All i really want is more power, i could care less about vents

Can you do Part 2 on the fake hood scoop? Those always bothered the hell out of me.
@shoveIАй бұрын
Do you mean on New Edge (99-04) Mustangs? Sure! My wife has a 2002 with all the fake scoops! I have a solution to the hood one but it's not free so it's gonna have to wait... but I can make a video without fixing hers.
@elektro3000Ай бұрын
@@shoveI Yes, exactly! I'd like to see that.

one could install a duct to the brakes?
@shoveIАй бұрын
If I was building a circuit car... well it would be easy with a rear seat delete to loop a duct around and blast at the center of the brake. Along with Cobra/Mach1 vented discs of course!

My god the wheels you have on that mustang. Youre not a brocolli headed gen z kid with a 2008 gti
