Welcome to the Spitballin' Cards podcast! Every Tuesday we will be releasing a baseball card podcast that is focused on the collectibility and investibility of baseball cards. In this episode, we discuss Ronald Acuña Jr. and whether or not his cards are overrated or underrated, if we would rather own Vladimir Guerrero Jr. or Yordan Alvarez cards, and much more!

The discussion about "who we wish would play in 150 games" reveals just how important player health is in the game AND the card collecting hobby. If players aren't out there consistently, it's hard for their prices to move consistently.

Outstanding! Idea for future episode: analysis of 2023 rookie card class. What lessons to take away from the first year and thoughts about those players going forward both in terms of production and card values. Curious what Scott and Lance think about Tovar. Other thoughts: Yes, Acuna is undervalued provided he continues to make a name for himself in the power-speed numbers for the next few years. He’ll slow down eventually speed-wise, but if he can keep putting together 40+/40+ for the remainder of his 20s, then in my opinion, undervalued. Best one-liners from the episode: If Ohtani goes to the Braves, Chris: pray for my wife. After Chris mentioned CL, Ty: I’ve been triggered. Probably Alvarez over Vlad, but tough call. Vlad is not as bad as this past season. And you can’t do anything if you’re not on the field. I don’t know. Maybe just convinced myself otherwise lol.

I’m sure we’ll get more into the 2023 rookie card class it/when topps is ever done printing them! Maybe by 2025?? Acuna, Yordan - their biggest obstacle so far has been injuries. Acuna more flukish for sure. I can’t wait to see what he does in 2024. If we could just get 150+ from Yordan the numbers could be INSANE!

What I don’t like about Expected stats is that the hitter would be pitched differently depending on the park, so it’s somewhat not accurate.

That makes sense! Thanks for the explanation! I still Haven’t seen a golden mirror ssp pop up, but the Trout/Julio SSP is incredibly disappointing.

Juan Soto has played in every game this season. 5 WAR. 910 OPS. 30+ HRs, 100+ RBIs, 90+ R, 125 BB. If this is his worse season, I'll take it. The problem with Soto is he starts out so poorly, and everyone has that sour taste in their mouths in April. So when he starts incrementally picking it up throughout the summer, no one notices. And not to get too excited about it, the Padres have won 7 in a row and are knocking on the door of the 3rd wild card spot. Sure, they need to win out to even have a chance but as a hometown Friar fan this has been the best stretch of the season thus far. As for Soto's card prices, he's down 50%-60% in some cases from the Soto boom in fall 2021. I'm thinking he goes nuclear in his walk year and stays with the Padres long term. The dude loves it here.

Where he goes will be fascinating to watch. Do the padres have the money to extend him?? Imagine the stars he could put up in Yankee Stadium…

I’m also expecting big walk year numbers. Padres lineup will have 4 bats ready bounce back.

People all over the world wear Yankees hats.... fashion statements in Italy, France, Asia etc ...iconic, posh brand. Braves hats (I love 'em)? but yawn... in terms of world appeal. NObody is wearing a Braves hat to the Cannes Film Festival....Acuna will have 60-70 more hits than Soto this year (repeat that twice).....and they both walk as much as they K. Acuna is far more dynamic a player than Soto... 200 hit season ~Soto wont ever have ( he doesn't even get a hit per game).... 30 steals? Soto wont go there either.... 40 bombs? I'm hoping Soto gets to but he hasnt touched that either..... Acuna is a more natural gifted MLB player ~ Soto is more technical... But there are a lot of ways to reach the HOF.... Soto will get there IMO without much stress. And I'm buying both. I dont care which player is the Babe Ruth or the Lou Gehrig....enjoyed it Fella's~ love you guys!

If you look at current players potential there is nobody to compare to Acuna. I would suggest buying his rookies on any weakness in price. I would prioritize his cards over anybody. If he keeps up his current pace nobody will be able to afford any of his cards by this time next year.

Great show! This week let’s discuss the AL rookie race - who would you grab of any of the rookies who will qualify for ROTY, who would you add to your team over the next 5 seasons? Casas, Bibbee, Greene, Colas, Jung, or Yoshida…(and anyone else I’m forgetting) based on overall WAR projections - not just best hitter, but position included.
