Something I have been worrying about for a while, has all my wet weather riding rusted up my scooter hub motors? While there are scooters for sale that claim to have good water resistance, it remains to be seen if the hub motors will pass the test.

The Apollo City really impressed me. Wow. I love the dual layer of protection. I think I'll be transitioning from Segway to Apollo after this video. Thank you for sharing this important information and all the hard work it took to get it for us.

My mantra - "If it flies, it can crash - if it floats, it can sink - if it's electrical, it'll kill ya; UNLESS YOU'RE CAREFUL". Water and electrons are best buds, but if/when we show up for a threeway, things get dicey - VERY dicey! Best to use your common sense and follow the manufacturers' guidelines (typically "Do NOT use in rainy/wet conditions"). Simple.

Great vid. Amazing to see how the motors stayed so clean. How did you decide upon the Apollo over Segway's higher end scooters like the P or GT series since coming from the Ninbot Max yourself?
@nicthedoor
@nicthedoor 2 ай бұрын
At the time the P series wasn't out yet. In retrospect with everything that has happened with Apollo and Segway, and the fact that I have over 4000km on the Apollo now, I am happy with my decision.

that metal spring thingy is supposed to go at the top of the wire near connectors, not at the bottom where you have it at 4:39 . Thats how you will cut or short the wireing for your motors and have to replace the whole motor.otherwise great video nic. i reccomend high temp rtv silicone it should do the trick for creating that rubber ring around the motor cover like you have built in on those for any others of similiar style.
@Chris-oj7ro
@Chris-oj7ro 6 ай бұрын
This is so false. It's literally there as additional protection for the wires. Wire insulation by itself is vulnerable to abrasion, and to being cut through. The metal "spring" isn't.

Nami burn e has had water ressitant motors for a long time they dont stand a chance if u fully submerge them in water but for stuff like in this video their great only thing is their sealed with some type of glue because i dont think the rubber woud survive the heat of the nami motor even thoe they coud have installed some type of gasket witch is temperature ressistant and doesent let water into the motor

The barrings usually don't have seals. The seals on the barring go out . The play gets worse . The wet easily gets in . Check for play often ,and if you have to replace your motor?? Shop UU motors!

Sad to see the "value of these hi value scooter" can't even handle some splashes lol. Manufacturers take note to seal and pott the electric items ect.... but then again disposable approach...... thanks for shedding some light not water on this topic lol hahha cheers.

did your scooter fail ?
@flitsies
@flitsies Жыл бұрын
Yes I came across the same problem with my Kugoo bike, so much rust, but I cleaned it out and sealed the motor edges didn't bother where the cable goes in to the wheel, but the outer rim fully water tight, easy to do, just get some silicon sealant and spread it around the gap, there is always a gap on a motor that was not made to be water tight, so all you are doing is sealing that gap. It's a cheap fix that works very well, water can't get in via the usual route and all is well. The cost of sealing the motor less than a pennies worth of silicon sealant. But a scooter could be slightly harder as it's lower to the ground, however using the same silicon sealant you could seal the underside deck to stop water getting in, and the motor you could do the same with that as well. Easy fix, low cost it just takes a little time doing it.

Great solution. I may be receiving a scooter with a lower IP rating. I might try that.
@flitsies

@@nicthedoor You can seal any bad ip rated bike or scooter you just have to identify where the water could get in, you can even protect your electronics using silicon sealant, cable connectors and so on.

I took my 10” (15” OD tire) hub motor apart (replace the hall sensor I accidentally shorted) after 2 years riding after it rained, water puddles, etc and it looked brand new like yours. One thing I noticed your motor and mind share is the phase and hall wires enter in the bottom and exit inside the motor out the top, making a snorkel effect (as long as you don’t install the stator upside down). So in theory water is not going to want to go inside under normal conditions, and you can probably submerge it up to the top of the tire and water won’t go in… ….except if you got the motor very hot and then cooled it so fast you created a slight vacuum. But the stator is not going to cool so fast so its a fight between the covers cooling the air and the stator heating it. Hopefully by then you are no longer submerging the axle. While i was waiting for the hall sensor with the motor open inside my apartment, it actually got more rust than 2 years of being sealed up. Another factor is I am in the Philippines. There is no such thing as dew. The temperature never drops to the dew point. But in climates that hover around dew point daily it can suck in humidity and condense it, suck in more humidity and condense it and after enough cycles the motor will be filled with water vapor when hot and if cooled just a little will condense again and suck in whatever is at the opening for the phase wire. And if you try to seal that (you shouldn’t), it will just suck it in through the seals because the vacuum can be much more than the seals can withstand.

One thing you have not accounted for is time. Over time, grease, rubber seals, and weatherproofing breaks down and loses effectiveness.

Yeah, maybe I wasn't as clear on that as I wanted to be. In the conclusion that is what I was trying to convey. It won't be THIS water resistant forever.
