You said something similar but I’ve read it somewhere that the spirit of junk journaling is about making art and meaning of what most would deem, wait for it, junk. Receipts, trash, scraps from “meaningless” ish. Scrapbooking isn’t focused on collecting junk but rather collecting key memories in an “aesthetic” way, whatever it is that the individual deems aesthetic. That said… with all due respect everyone who had a strong opinion… IT DOESNT MATTER. The argument seems so pointless. Who cares?! Journal, scrapbooking, poopin in a book. Whatever you call it, we’re all just trying to memorialize and make meaning of our often seemingly silly, meaningless existence by creating art as a reminder that we existed at all. LETS JUST ALL BE FRIEEEENDS.

Call it what you will..to each their own. As long as you are enjoying what you are doing there’s no need to be so precise with labeling. At least that’s my thought…I came here for creative inspiration. Your vibe attracts your tribe❣️✨

Oh boy do i have thoughts on labels. But also you're so real with not going back to look at previously done pages. I also just say "my journal" too. I feel like I so understand the way you look at journaling 😂 long comment ahead, sorry To me personally there's a difference between collage and memory keeping, and Idek where journaling fits in that. Then between those there's a whole bunch of sub categories in my head. Collage to me involves art and creativity, like art journaling, traditional collage, glue books, where as memory keeping serves to jog your memory and includes either photos, ephemera from activities of the day, or actual writing about an event. Then journaling is the act of writing down your thoughts. When you look up the words "scrapbook" and "junk journal" on social media, these days you usually get the same popular posts of people using stickers and paper packs and the asmr. To me, that isn't junk journaling or scrapbooking at all, that is collage. Junk journaling also isn't really stuff that I'd normally throw away that has a significance to me, like your receipts. Given it was something that i aqcuired by doing (or eating 😋) that day, it will jog my memory and is a part of my memory keeping. Junk journaling to me is using things like promotional pamphlets that come in the mail, free magazines at your local library, cheap books you're going to repurpose from the thrift store. To top it off, for me, if you didn't write in it, it's a giant collage/glue book. But then I'm also like hmmm, if i use a cereal box to make something like a journal cover, and it's not being used in a way to jog my memory, but i know i ate the cereal...memory keeping or junk journaling? (I'd say jujo lol) And then scrapbooking to me means old school 12 x 12 albums your grandma made in the early 2000s with the brown and pink and yellow paisleys everywhere 😂 Now that industry has evolved to reflect more recent trends, it's still alive and well and I love it, but most people don't write a whole bunch on their pages or even date them. So that's like a decorated photo album since to me, memory keeping ≠ journaling. (Journaling can be memory keeping though) But there so so many other ways ppl memory keep. You've got bujo baddies who have their year in Polaroids, monthly recaps and reflections. The happy planner babes who back plan/memory keep with the sticker kits and cute icons. The project life/week in the life/day in the life/pocket page people. The creative journal ppl (which is a whole other discussion bc what encompasses a creative journal anyway?), the faubonichi peeps, the mini album peeps, the people who literally just have a box of Polaroids and they write on the back. And then those who forgo the paper altogether and do everything digitally. At the end of the day...i don't actually care what anyone wants to call what they do with their notebooks and glue and paper 😂 i interact with those who have the content I enjoy, and i keep it pushing.
