When comparing whether to grade with PSA or SGC, most people look at the pros and cons of each company. SGC is less expensive and has a faster turnaround time. PSA seems to have higher values and the set registry. As a result, one of the things I've continue to monitor is the sales prices on the secondary market. Using the ‪@MarketMovers‬ app, I take a closer look at the data to determine if the trends are moving in the direction of PSA or SGC. Quite frankly, the numbers might surprise you. This is a topic that I'll continue to monitor, as I think it affects all of us in the hobby.
I mentioned a Market Movers promo code in the video, and I believe I mistakenly said you'd get a 30% discount with my promo code. In actuality, if you're interested in trying the Market Movers App, you can get a 14 day free membership and a 20% discount off of an ongoing membership by registering with the promo code: Midlife
Here is a link to register if you're interested. You just need to remember to use the promo code of Midlife. www.sportscardinvestor.com/pl...

Personally when I am buying a card, it makes no difference to me whether it’s a PSA or SGC. Actually I think SGC is more consistent in their grading than PSA, plus, again, personally I prefer the look of the SGC slab better. Just hoping , SGC doesn’t change since the buyout. When you see more and more of some of the most expensive cards in the world in SGC slabs, that is good enough for me. Great video by the way, as usual.

Great video, Graig . I have noticed that SGC is closing the gap on a lot of cards, too. It puts it into perspective seeing it on graphs. SGC is definitely a great value in a lot of cases.

Hi Graig, Thank you for doing a feature on the rivalry between SGC and PSA. I love SGC, but it’s going to be years before SGC is in the same ballpark as PSA. I still say that SGC is the best for vintage cards and their presentation. As usual you are a pleasure. Peter

Compelling arguments as usual Graig. Other factors affecting values that are difficult to quantify: (1) New collectors grading more big cards with SGC to avoid PSA upcharges (2) Shorter timeline to have cards graded with SGC thus increasing percentage of SGC card populations (3) Perception that SGC cards are more economical which is leading to more SGC sales thus driving up demand & prices (4) Continued hatred towards the PSA “evil empire” & general acknowledgment that SGC is leading the industry in customer service & turnaround times for those flipping for profit (5) And many more market factors too numerous to mention

Neat information. The majority of the cards I have picked up lately are in SGC holders mainly because I thought the card was graded correctly and looked better in the holder and the price was so much better for the same card. I still wonder if now that PSA owns them if the trend you picked up will continue.

I agree with you 100% on the cards being graded correctly and for a better value with SGC! To often I have seen PSA graded cards that were sub par, off center etc that were in a 10 grade! Especially if the cards came from big time Sellers or Submitters where it seems tgry have preferred treatment and grades.

Let's think about the "anomalies" in the data, the cards selling in auctions for significantly more than the average. They could be a case of two buyers wanting the same card (like the Koufax rookie) and getting into a "bidding war" that drove up the price of the card.
@MidLifeCards

100% there are always outliers, but those go both ways. Things sell for less than normal as well. That's why I use a lot of different cards, different years, and different grades, and use the grades that have lots of data points so all of that evens out.

I just want to mention that I have bought some graded cards from 4 Bases grading service and I think they are the best looking slavs. I hope you'll take a look. Appreciate the research and sharing your findings. I’m strictly a PSA guy - just love the uniformity in my collection and don’t own any SGC or BGS. I have a feeling that there’s not a big discrepancy in lower/mid grades of the not super desirable vintage cards. There’s just not going to be a big difference in demand/price for a 4th year Al Kaline whether it be PSA or SGC. I have a feeling we’ll find the big discrepancies in the higher grade, super premium, ultra desirable cards. I think PSA will consistently outsell SGC by a wide margin in the ultra premium collectibles. Don’t think SGC is gaining any ground in that market. Not that I have any data to back that up - strictly an assumption. Not shocking to hear that an SGC 3 1960 Hank Aaron all star card sold for $10 more than a PSA 3 if it had slightly better eye appeal. But I’d be VERY shocked to see an SGC 8 Jordan rookie ever outsell a comparable PSA 8 copy.

Excellent work Graig. In my adventures, I find that SGC does hold its own as a rule in the 4-6 mid grades of the iconic vintage players such as Mays, Clemente, Aaron, etc. , as these are the cards I mostly target. Happy to see that more and more people are coming out and acknowledging the consistent grading of SGC because that is real and has been this way for a number of years now. Your thoughts: now that we have the “merger” of these companies being owned by the same conglomerate, do you think that they might get together to share their views on grading and perhaps establish a more uniform set of rules for each grade ?
@MidLifeCards
@MidLifeCards 4 ай бұрын
Both companies do list their technical grading criteria. But, I don't think they'll ever share the actual process. I think it's like the coke formula or the herbs and spices used by KFC. Never going to be disclosed.

Great data, Graig. I will be very interested to see what happens with some of these cards over Q2. The SGC acquisition announcement was back on 2/28, which only allows for a week's worth of sales data between that announcement and your end date for the data. Will SGC sale price increase over the next few months as perhaps some collectors believe there will be SGC cards in a registry, for example? In some ways I think Q2 data will be even more interesting to look at!

I personally would never use or pay for any services. Like you said, it does not track all of the data and is very misleading. When the people who supply information are not trustworthy, it is hard to get on board. My favorite when selling and buying is a stat that is rarely mentioned. That being the card in hand, in the now plus what is currently available.

@@MidLifeCards Agreed, I just wish like all in life, more was transparent. I sell direct and been in the hobby since I was a kid, and I know people at shows, and have some major collections that do not sniff anything "online" when it comes to social media etc. Too much of those "apps" are to control the narrative and prop up certain parts of the hobby. Many have touched on that as well over the years and post c-vid. Just important for all of us to keep in mind what these apps track and do not track. Modern 8s, 9s, 10s of the same card, I am all for it...however the app/data should have an asterisk of anything under let's say 5 or 10 sales for example on base or #'d cards above 99. Then you have a real comp. I see absolutely no way to have anything accurate for vintage as you know PSA 4, or SGC 4 could have 50 sales and all 50 look different, the beauty of Vinatieri being so unique they have worn characteristics and are like fingerprints. I know me, you and many share that feeling with vintage. And I always end with this, something I learned over the years...Don't over think it, I believe we are adding things that do more harm then good with those apps, another way for people to cash in and grab a slice of the hobby money pool. It's is very simple to get a deal done and trade or sell a card over the last few decades without those apps. Good stuff, keep the content rolling, hope you make the National this year, would love to meet up to say high. I live about 15 minutes from this years location.

The thing that occurs to me, looking at this data, is that generally as the “assigned” grades get better - SGC generally does better? I think? And I it looked to me like in all these cards but Willie, there seemed to be a so-called “collector’s grade” improvement for SGC (I know not every collector adheres to “collectors grade” - but a fair amount do). But I’m digesting quickly… will look harder later! Midlife at its best. What a utility!!

Graig, it will be interesting to see if SGC starts to fall in comparison to PSA over the next several months as trends start to come in since the acquisition. My guess is SGC starts to fall back and we see a more widened spread in difference as collectors begin to go with the perceived stronger maybe more stable company in PSA.

Makes no sense how PSA is more valuable. Now I get it, some people want PSA because their collection is entirely PSA. However! I say this! For buyers to argue dropping down several hundred dollars because it is in a SGC slab and not PSA is nonsense. SGC sellers should not bend the knee and do so. Nothing makes PSA better. Facts I've seen horrible PSA 10s. So their not perfect! And what makes PSA graders the king of kings of grading? Did they go to University of Harvard to learn how to grade? Does PSA us the hubble telescope to grade their cards? Does PSA have Master Yodas teaching their graders? I say this. At the least SGC sellers on ebay as myself need to stay firm with our prices. If they want PSA slabs well thats on them to resubmit to PSA.

Not a bad idea of resubmitting to SGC if they want cards in PSA slabs.
@MrOlivasalone
@MrOlivasalone 3 ай бұрын
@@MidLifeCards I would also like to add if PSA honored all SGC 10s and with a small fee of just simply changing the holder, you will see SGC prices bump up. In addition to that. If PSA says they will re-grade a SGC 9.5 to a 10 for same fee as if you were to grade a raw card, however, if the card is not a 10 you have to option of slabing it with a PSA 9 or reslab with an SGC 9.5. I understand you'll need inventory of both SGC and PSA slabs but at this point you are catering to all customers. This method is what CGC does with comic books, you can put a minimum allowed grade on your comic. For example if the comic book is to a 9.4 but you opted into only slabbing the comic if it were a 9.6 or above, then CGC will not slab the comic they will just return it for the grading fee.
