ARE SOLAR PANELS WORTH IT? - DIY JOURNEY
With the worlds as it is currently, inflation as it is, and the future being uncertain. Is now the time to invest in solar panels and become a self producer of energy.
In this video, I aim to share my thought process and very estimated workings out for if we can justify investing in a solar pv system.
Huge thank you @oursolarjourney - oursolarjourney...
For there assistance with my figures and offering advice.

Really interesting video Rob & really helpful for someone who, like you, has always considered the payback to be too long. Thanks.

I'm guessing you'd have to add standing charges to your total bills of £1,939.80. That's an insane amount of usage mate and considering how most LED lights and TVs as well as other appliances are now supposedly energy saving or smart!

Standing charges are irrelevant to calculations as you pay regardless so can be removed. The usage is due to an electric car, which Im sure I mentioned in the video.

Hi Rob. Great video. Any chance you can do a breakdown of the system you’re getting installed and cost breakdown? Thanks

Thank you, I do plan on it yes to help demonstrate the full story and also a video down the line showing whether it is on track to have good payback.

This is a very interesting subject. A high quality Solar + battery system with 25yrs warranty is a good thing at any age or stage in your life but moreso when you are about to retire. Consider that current prices are un sustainable and the country is on its knees simply because electricity is linked to gas prices. Once de-linked prices will fall and cheap rate overnight rate will disappear. In time, with loss of revenue in fossil fuel duty, the Gov will find a way to tax you on your free solar fuel which you paid to install in addition to BIK for co car use. In USA energy companies are now imposing a MIN MONTHLY BILL of about $30 on solar FIT systems + standing charges. They are there to make money not provide you a top up energy supply. I am looking to a solar roof but I'm at retirement stage so just looking to reduce the daily usage.

Absolutely…how the future of electricity is, I don’t know. Of course something will be done as we already see small rises in BIK for electric cars, but 3-5 years £250 a month saving almost pays for it.

You should have just got the battery and charged at night rate.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, unfortunately that wouldn’t give an opportunity charge my car though. If you dont have an EV id be tempted to agree

No one is considering the following; in your case use the cheap night rate to charge your house battery instead of the car; that way your battery is topped up each night for 75% per unit saving; now consider this don’t buy solar panels just buy 10kw batteries and run your house off them charging at night you’ve just paid 7p kw instead of 34p! No solar required…tell me I am wrong?

You are wrong…for my situation 😃. You say a very general statement of ‘noone’. With such an outlay that absolutely has been considered, would be very silly to spend that amount of money and not view all aspects, just because its not been said in the video already nearly 20min video🤦🏽‍♂️. For me and this video is about my situation, it is better to have solar panels because I have an electric car with another on order and is the future most people if we are generalising. If you don’t have an electric car ‘battery only’ becomes possibly the better option short term. 10kwh of storage is nothing when the house uses on avg 12kwh per day and the car has a battery capacity of 74kw. Meaning we would be spending 34p kwh for the majority of our usage. Battery only would save me a maximum of 15- 25% of our usage rather than 50-70% with solar. Also considered the 0% VAT buying solar and battery rather than paying 20% VAT on the battery only option…oh I didnt mention that either 😃

@@DIYJourney1 absolutely dude didn’t mean to offend; that’s the thing about solar every house usage is different and you’ve picked the best for you and considered all the options I agree! I was putting it out there for people to consider if they think solar isn’t for them think just batteries only I was doing the maths on my 8kw system and light bulb moment with octopus cheap at night just use batteries as a consideration and again depending on peoples usage simply put in a 5-10-15/20 kWh batteries. If they used 15kw that day then it charges 15k if they used 5k it charges 5kw etc - likewise let’s say to your situation; if not enough solar produce to charge your batteries then charging/top up on cheap nightly rate could be an option esp in winter. But again you’ll know with your stats over time if that’s worthy of considering. All the best

I literally was saying to my parents the other day, that I feel for them battery only maybe the best option. However, the VAT saving when bought with solar, for us was £1000 on the battery so is a good contribution to solar so a tricky one, but absolutely agree people need to do these assessments and understand. Which is why it took me 3 attempts to do this video 🤣 the more I understood the more my thought process changed and now we are having a BIG system 😃, more to come on that
