Full proof means it was proofed down to what it entered the barrel at. Barrel proof/strength means it’s bottle at whatever proof comes out of the barrel. Love your guys’ videos!

I have 2-3 1792 FP store picks and people think I'm crazy because I tell them it's my favorite bottle in the last 2-3 years. Give it 2-3 months to open up and the candied fruit comes through on the bottles I've had. What a hitter.

I did a store pick tasting for my buddy's liquor store in Bardstown, Ky at 1792 for a Full Proof Bottle. The staff at 1792 was amazing to us and we had a blast learning from them. They are non chill filtered bottles and I want to say they brought us 4 or maybe 5 barrels from all different parts of the barrel house. They couldn't have tasted more different. Each barrel had its' own unique flavors and attributes. We spent hours going over them and the barrel we picked was amazing! They are 1 off's compared to the regularl release. Definitely worth trying if you see them.

I'm still working through the last of my first 1792 Full Proof. It is a Total Wine store pick. When I first opened it, it was just too dang hot. It drank more like 140 proof. It's been open for many months now and the heat has dissipated a bit. It's rounded into a really enjoyable pour. I recently found a pick at a different store so I grabbed that one.

Great content, as always!! I have found getting to know the store and their palate preferences is key. To get a store pick just because it’s a store pick can be a crap shoot if you don’t know what they shoot for in their picks. I have two specific stores that I get my picks from as I have gotten to know the owners and align really well to their palates. A good store will offer samples of their picks for you to try before buying.

I picked up a store pick of Stellum and the first thing I thought of when I started drinking it was "man these guys must love scotch". Definitely had notes of Oban, but a bit more subdued but higher proof. After I finish this one, which may take a while, dont know that I'll buy any more of this stores picks unless they are willing to serve up some samples of it first. Strong ethanol start which lingered too.

Bought a store pick AND a regular release from Beverage House in Vista, CA about a year ago. The store pick was noticeably better, almost sublime. I went back and bought 3 more bottles the next day. I ended up buying 8 more total including the last one. I still have not finished the second bottle as I have a lot of other Bourbons. I will be enjoying this for years.

So cool that you’re doing this. I just blinded my 1792 FP against a pick (r/bourbon). The pick had a better nose…. but I honestly couldn’t discern a difference on the palate and finish. Great episode! I guess a pick is only as good as the picker!

I have two 1792 store picks and the difference is crazy. The one is great - smooth and has complex flavors. The other I would be better off using as a cleaning solvent. The one that isn’t very good came from a store where I also had picked up a Knob Creek store pick. Not a fan of that one either. I don’t plan on buying any more from that store but do will continue to pick some up elsewhere when I see them. They really can be very different from the normal bottles - coinflip as to whether it’s better or worse

The point that many have made here IS that the store picks are only as good as (or at least reflective of) the palate(s) that pick them, so they can be hit and miss--or at least not match your palate. I have not had many great Total Wine picks, but in Texas I find Spec's picks to be reliable.

I almost never find store picks to be superior to what the distillery puts out. I think for 3 reasons, #1 taste is so specific that unless you and whoever is doing the picks have similar taste, odds are they won't pick something you like, #2 I find they try to pick something "different" from what the distillery puts out and that usually translates to not as good and #3 do we really think some random liquor store owner has a better, more refined and more trained palette than the distillery master taster/distiller/selection panel? All of this is why I love the single barrel or picks released by the distilleries. They are almost always superior to store picks, and sometimes even better than the regular stuff. I haven't yet had the pleasure of tasting one of the SLB picks, but I have to say one of the reasons I enjoy your videos so much is early on I figured out you guys tend to like the same things I do, which means I would be more likely to enjoy your picks. I guess if you can find a specific store that picks in line with your taste, then absolutely, but in general, chasing store picks is going to end up with you owning a shelf full of inferior whiskey. JMHO of course. To each their own.

I'm hesitant to go for store picks unless the store at least provides a description of what makes the pick unique with tasting notes. That's really helpful to me, as opposed to just putting it on a shelf and leaving it a mystery. I have a local store that puts descriptor names on their Knob Creek store picks like "Candy" and "Top Floor Vanilla," and they have short explanations for the names.

For myself I tend to not go for 'store picks'. A store pick is a voted on barrel, picked by a group of strangers to me. I have no idea what their tastes are or what they like or are looking for in their Bourbon. The group of store employees that vote on a barrel pick could have radically opposite flavor profile characteristics to what I like or desire in a Bourbon bottle profile. That for me tends to be the case. My tastes and what I look for in Bourbon is vastly different than the majority of the majority of people or Bourbon enthusiasts. That is why store picks don't impress me. I have learned to stay clear of them. It will just end up being a let down and waste of money and probably end up getting poured down the drain.

Single Barrel store picks that are normally batched products have more gravitas. That's why Weller store picks are the most sought after. ...Especially going back a few years before distilleries' marketing departments decided to make "store picks" available to every store that had the through put, even large chain grocery stores. Since that point, "store picks" have lost their luster a bit. I still buy them, but have time believing "joe the grocer" sat down and actually went through a lineup of barrels and hand selected "his" barrel based on his "seasoned palate" .

The store will call attention to their picks. Often there will be a separate shelf for store picks. There should be a shelf tag saying "this is a store pick" and an extra label on the bottle. Where I am (Ohio) picks are done at the state level (OHLQ). The label will say something like "OHLQ exclusive, barrel 247". Stores typically have a shelf devoted to OHLQ picks.

My bottle of Balcones True Blue corn whisky is a Total Wine store pick - and I didn't realize it till I got to the house and saw the sticker. There might have been something on the shelf, but I had already planned to get that whisky and so I was just looking at the bottles.

These explanations are great! There should be a sticker on the bottle that states that fact. Just ask the store clerk for location of their barrel picks.

Store picks are a try before you buy in my book. I bought a 1792 Full Proof that was a nasty mess. Since then, I have only bought from stores that have sample pours for sale.

A good store will have samples of their picks. Good call.

Suprised to hear so many people saying this drinks so hot...The bottle of 1792 Full Proof I have drinks WAY below proof. The BiB I have even feels hotter. I guess that goes to show how varied store picks can be.

Struggled for the right words there but was trying to explain how much more the flavors were pronounced compared to the shelf bottle.

You mentioned getting hit with the proof when your nose gets too close to the tulip. Have you guys ever tried the Norlan whiskey glasses? They really let the nose come through. Would be interested in a video review of them. Slàinte
