I think switchers can help preserve tone (buffers can help with that too) and reduce noise, but the real benefit comes with programmable switchers that make it possible to switch multiple pedals with a single stomp. The downside of that is that you then have to spend hours thinking about the different combinations you use and then programming them. Fine if you have a fixed set list. Not so good if you don't. And a pedalboard with a switcher invariably gets big and heavy, which can be a pain.

Only just found your channel, I’ve only recently rebuilt my own board around the qmx6 that I had for about 2 years but wasn’t using it as I also have an boss es8 but back in March it started acting up so I ripped the board apart but only put the qmx board together as with no gigs happening there wasn’t much need for a board....! One thing I find very handy with qmx is it gives you access to pedals on the back row of your board without stepping on the ones on the near row also I’ve got a compressor upside down on the underneath of my board with the knobs taped as I don’t need to adjust it and this frees up a space for a pedal on top ! So defo switchers for the win!

Pedals 'n' Stuff To be fair half the fun is assembling/ reassembling the boards, another little trick for you with the qmx, if you have a analog delay that doesn’t have trails is to put it in the last loop of the qmx , don’t connect it to loop 6 return but instead put in a shorted jack plug and run the qmx output and delay into a parallel mixer like the JHS 2 into one mixer so when you switch off the delay with button 6 on the qmx you get the trails from the delay as it’s return is still connected but it’s input isn’t !

Interesting! The way I hear it, the switcher results in more mids and a fuller sound, BUT, unless I'm imagining it, the highs are lessened (not good, IMO). Without the switcher, the highs are noticeably more present. Compare 7:15 (no switcher) with 7:27 (with switcher). And then again, compare 7:45 (no switcher) with 8:03 (with switcher). Where did all the highs go, when the switcher is added?? GREAT demo, thank you.

Definitely a noticeable difference. The tone without the switcher loses a lot of low end, and low mids. Sounds much thinner. Using the switcher, the tone is closer to the the straight into amp sound with no effects. IMO, the switcher is well worth it (to be transparent, I have a Quartermaster). Hi, just a comment - isn't the belle epoch buffered bypass? I wonder if most of the difference you're hearing is actually from taking the buffer out of the signal chain when you use the switcher, as the most noticeable effect of buffers is usually to make things sound brighter and compensate for loss of high end due to cable capacitance... (Rather than the switcher "preserving" your mids and low end). Great vid though, love to see people putting stuff like this to the test.

Hey. No reason why not I can think of. Depends what you want to do with it I guess but, as I’m sure you know, the qmx is a basic switcher so it doesn’t affect the operation of the Stomp at all, just brings it in and out of the signal path.

Interesting that the tone is a bit brighter w/o the switcher but a bit noisier. Conversely, with the switcher, the signal does appear to be fuller and more responsive - do to it being, perhaps, a somewhat stronger signal. Would be interesting to determine that point, true or not.

What’s holding me back is, and maybe you can help me, if I pass through my volume pedal and wah pedal, or have a boost as the end that is not connected to the switcher, it all still in the chain, is the switcher even worth is at that end? Does the capacitance drop permanently and most notably with just one pedal in the chain but not connected to the switcher? I hope that made sense. Thanks for the video. It’s one a lot of us needed.
@samgoffenguitar

Thx so much for the comment. I’m very glad it was useful for you. If you have pedals before or after the switcher they will always be in the signal path. @@samgoffenguitar I’m primarily doing it for tone. I just don’t know how marginal it would be if a pedal or two in the chain that wasn’t connected to the switcher. Does even one pedal before or after that switcher, defeat the point all together.
@samgoffenguitar
@samgoffenguitar 3 жыл бұрын
@@allend3127 I wouldn’t say that, but it may well affect things. Depends on the pedal too, buffered, true bypass etc. I sometimes have a preamp style pedal outside of the loop as an always on pedal, so you can use ones outside the loop as tone shaping tools too. I’d consider getting a switcher and experimenting as only you can know the tone you want at the end of the day. Maybe get a used one so if you do sell it on you don’t lose money.

the bigest problem i see using this type of switcher is that you don’t have option to put some loop in the fxloop of your amp?? so all the pedals that are connected to the quartermaster will be in front of the amp…?
@samgoffenguitar
@samgoffenguitar 2 жыл бұрын
That can be true. This is a basic switcher but there are more complex ones like the G3 from gigrig which allow more ins and outs. You can also use ports on the side of your board like those that temple boards do www.templeaudio.com/mods So there are always options. Personally I use a two rock as an amazing clean platform, so I use pedals in front of the amp anyway. There’s very little point in using the effects loop unless running distortion from the amp.

Hey man, great video! I’m about to get one of these, I have a question though. Can you put more than one pedal in a loop, for example delay and phaser in loop 1, but have one off in case you want to use only one? or if you have 2 in one loop they always will sound together when it’s on? Thanks in advance for the response and great work again with the video 🔥
@samgoffenguitar
@samgoffenguitar 3 жыл бұрын
You can have as many in a loop as you’d like but …. If you only want one to come on when you use the Quartermaster you’d need to only have that one pedal switched on. You probably know this but the way these switchers work is that you have the pedal in the loop but switched on all the time. Then when you engage that loop on the switcher, you then put that pedal in the signal chain. So if you have two pedals in one loop but don’t want one to sound all the time, it can’t be on. Then you’d have to turn it on separately. So basically, yes you can have more than one in a loop but one on and the other off. You can get big buttons that are useful additions too. They go over the switch and are great.

I’ll like to use the dedicated loop I’m gonna set on the QMX6 for the delay to send it to the fx loop of my amp. Do you think that with one of these single loop pedal switchers like the one from Loop-Master can I do that but also run it in front of the amp when the switcher is off? Is any of that possible? haha thanks again bro! I just found out about the One Control Chamaeleo Tail Loop MKII and I need help cause I really want the QMX6
@samgoffenguitar
@samgoffenguitar 3 жыл бұрын
@@chusmusic with the QM6 the input goes in on the right side, then outputs on the left, with any loops that are turned on coming in between. This means there is in effect only one output of the QM6, so if you want a delay pedal in the loop of your amp, you can’t really have it in your QM6. There are solutions of course and unless you’re using lots of overdrive from your amp you don’t really need the delay in the loop. I tend to use pedals for dirt which is why I went for the Two Rock amp as it’s got so much headroom. So all I do is have the delay after my dirt pedals in the QM6. Hope this helps :)

Hi, no it won’t. There is no digital programmable aspect to the Qmx. So you can’t do things like change the order of the loops etc like with the more advanced switchers. You may be able to find a way with creative cabling but it’s not designed with this in mind.

Hmm. Odd doing tone comparison with pedals in the chain that are true bypass. I’ve used switching systems for decades, and for me at least, it all comes down to convenience, noise control, and where/what buffers appear in the chain.
@samgoffenguitar
@samgoffenguitar 4 жыл бұрын
Thx for the comment but it’s not odd at all. Many people use switchers as even when true bypass pedals you still have lengths of cable and the pedals the signal is travelling through. This can add up to a lot of extra cable which impacts tone. I honestly don’t need to defend this point, it’s just fact. As a simple comparison anyone can try, play through just one pedal with just one cable going in and one out to the amp. Now hook up your entire board (which for some people is vast) without a switcher and check the tone and feel. There’s a clear difference, especially if you record the sound of both so you can A B it later on as it’s easy to forget what one pedal sounds like on its own by the time you’ve then set up an entire board. It also comes down to as you say, convenience eg putting specific pedals you always have on together in one loop to save on tap dancing. Apart from this, everyone’s idea of good tone and feel on the guitar varies, and I definitely found a positive difference when using the switcher to when not. However ymmv etc.

Pedals 'n' Stuff, I’ve 19 pedals on my main analog board in a high quality switching system incorporating isolated power supplies. A little less than half are buffered in the off position. For the rest, if I have them “off” with a given loop engaged, I’m basically listening to the color of cable, connectors, and true bypass switches. With coax cable in the loops, and total cable length considered, the items mentioned add up, but are still virtually invisible compared to chaining them inline. Totally different story if the non-true-bypass loops are engaged with the pedals off. Interactions between buffers makes (potentially) a bigger audible difference than the virtually transparent switching system loops and additional cabling. I had a strong reaction seeing true bypass pedals in the equation without mention of which ones buffer in the off position. Please pardon my chiming in, and I hope our discussion here helps someone. Ultimately ears have the final word, and myth abounds. I switched to electric guitar in 1983, and have heard my fair share of buzzy, naively wired systems, thus some strong opinions. Cheers.

Cautionary tale with a happy ending: A friend once coveted an original Boss CE-1. He eventually purchased one. Listening in isolation he was devastated that it sounded nothing like what he was expecting. He later called me to report that his cheap tuner pedal placed in front of the chorus revealed the dream tone he’d anticipated. (Phew!) Buffers matter, at least sometimes. If he had the tuner isolated in a switching system, he might not have discovered the solution to the impedance issue.

Paul Stafford Cook all correct😃. You need your own patch cables that connect each pedal to the switcher. You can have more than one pedal in a loop though if you want.
