It seems like 2021 was full of M1 MacBook Air scandals. Swap memory, killer USB-C hubs, defective screens, and overheating. I covered these issues back then, but what about two years later? Do the M1 MacBook Airs have any issues in 2023? Let's take a look.

My M1 Air died in Dec 2022. It was 21 months old. It was not responding to any keys or trackpad. My local Apple store tried a new trackpad and connecting cable. They also tried replacing the complete topdeck keyboard etc. No success. They finally fixed it by replacing the complete logic board and touch ID button. They charged me £429 U.K. ( a discounted rate) They said that it only had a 12 month warranty. I purchased it online from an Apple Authorised Seller (Currys/PC World) in the UK. My Apple Store that they would have honoured the repair cost up to 24 months if it had been purchased direct from Apple, even though they also only sell with a 12 month warranty officially. It's working fine again but it was a disappointing introduction to Apple build quality. It is my first Apple product. My previous cheap Chinese PC laptop was still working perfectly with not even a loose key when I bought this M1 Air.

I’m sorry this happened to you, really sucks. But let me tell you something: all purchases in the EU carry a 3 YEAR WARRANTY from the seller (not the brand! The seller). Obvious exceptions apply: food, clothes and consumable parts like batteries and car tires. I haven’t been in the UK since Brexit but I remember them having 5 YEAR warranty from the seller! So, if you had contacted the seller of your computer directly instead of Apple, and if had mentioned a “Warranty claim under Consumer Law”, you probably would’ve gotten a free computer or repair. The more you know!

I had this same issue occur with my own MacBook Air M1 and when I contacted Apple; they were confused upon this issue; with the laptop not responding at all. I'm cheap, so I got the base M1 Air (8GB/256GB) on sale. I've had it for well over a year, and no problems at all. The 8GB has not been a problem. I use it for email, spreadsheets, web browsing, note taking, and web development. I don't use it for video editing or anything like that. The main limitation I've noticed is that it might start to slow down if you have a large number of browser tabs open, say thirty. That's not a problem for me, because I don't like having lots of tabs open because it becomes cumbersome keeping track of them. The 256GB has not been a limitation at all. I have all the software I want loaded on there (and then some), including Xcode, Android Studio, Visual Studio, Visual Studio Code, Node, and IDLE, and still have lots of room. The story would probably be different if I had lots of video files and photos.

I specifically wanted to leverage my BB credit for a top line M1 16” pro instead of opening a new financing line at Apple. Welp, unfortunately, BB never carried above 16 gig RAM /1tb ssd. The base M1 Air continues to be a best buy. Here's why - You are rarely punished for buying Apple's most inexpensive laptop. It's zippy, has a great screen, sounds great, is dead silent, and lasts forever on a charge. And I haven't even mentioned the price yet...

The screen cracking happened to my partners M1 Air. They said even a paper clip between the screen when closing it could cause it to crack. I could not believe it, because there was no clear signs of damage to the exterior of the laptop. $700 to replace the entire screen assembly and now the hinge is so stiff you have to cleave it open. If I have a Time Machine backup on external drive (let’s call it drive X), and assume that my internal drive suddenly died, can I boot from another external drive and retrieve a full backup from drive X? I’m thinking instead of throwing my Macbook, I will keep booting from an external drive and will live with it this way till I replace or repair my Mac. But is it a possible solution?

I just looked into my old mini's DIY Fusion drive's ssd, which failed. I ran High Sierra, ssd was X400 128GB, which has TBW of 72. SMART tells that real NAND writes were 111TB! (Actual data writes were 63TB, so there's quite much internal writing to keep bits "fresh".) The ssd was powered on little less than 10k hours. Mini has 16GB of RAM and I used it about 2-3 years with nothing extreme, probably the most RAM hungry was Chrome, which I usually end up having over 100 tabs, before I save all tabs to Session Buddy and start again with just few tabs. 9.9k hours with 111TB makes average of 11.4GB PER HOUR as AVERAGE! (But just 3.2Mbit/s for comparison.) MacOS has swapped like crazy for a long time and I do hate to use soldered storage. To conclusion, escpecially now that you can DIY all external Fusion drives (as a system drive) in APFS with desktop macs, it is wise to have a big ssd side. Not for speed, but for longevity.

New macbook m2 pro has slower ssd. Will swap memory performance be an issue when you compare it to M1 pro ssd?
@niaz.shovon
@niaz.shovon 7 ай бұрын
It's actually not slow, you just need to choose the right model. M1 uses 128GB X 2 SSD chips, where as M2 got 256GB X 1 chip. M1 can read/write two chips simultaneously which effectively doubled the throughput. If you purchase a M2 512GB version, there will be 256GB X 2 chips in it, and that will be even faster than the M1 because M2 SSD chips are upgraded version.

I have a question ! With MacOS Ventura, does the memory swap still a problem ? Apple fixed it ? Actually, I have basic use like editing word, watch video, internet etc.. and I have about 9Gb of written data in 1 month of use. Is it okay for the lifespan of the SSD ?

People who are short on a budget often do 4k editing on cheap windows laptop, that doesn't have enough ram, although it makes the hardware slower(barely useable) during editing and takes a lot of time during rendering, the laptop/ssd doesn't just die.

I got a deal on a 512 GB SSD/8 GB MacBook Pro M1 13" for $500 USD and it has been a phenomenal introduction to Mac OS. It was in mint condition and the battery only had 13 charge cycles on it. My workflow is mostly MS Word for writing, a few tabs in chrome, and Apple Music. I also close those programs down for whenever I watch movies, use emulators, or use Moonlight to stream from my gaming rig. It's been nothing but a joy to use.

With the killer USB C hubs. I owned a 2018 HP Envy x360 and used a Dell USB-C monitor which supported 65w charging at the same time. Super convenient. Used for months with no issue then one day the usb c port died, i unplugged and kept trying and then bang, a loud click noise and the computer was dead, didn’t respond to power, charger nothing. I think the monitor fried the motherboard but I never expected this as i thought there would be some failsafe. I still use a 2021 HP spectre x360 with no issue with the monitor but my replacement 2018 HP Envy x360 USB C port recently died with the monitor again, I am not plugging the monitor in again because I am scared it will fry the laptop, but something tells me it’s either a faulty failsafe on those model of computers or something is wrong with the wattage of the dell monitor. Note: I only recommend official USB C accessories, meaning if you have a HP laptop, buy the HP hubs and accessories, sure others will work but many are not to the same standard as the official OEM products. Same with Apple computers

Completely disagreed with screen issues. I suffered from one two months ago it was repaired for free( still in warranty). the problems caused the right side to flicker and not work. m1 mac has many problems but they vary from user to user. turns out the screen issue is rather common at least that's what the service center guy said to me.

I don't have the Air, but instead the base model M1 MacBook Pro (8 gb RAM, 256 gb SSD). And even with its 8 gb of RAM it has been a rock solid and very quick laptop for my daily use. The Air would have performed the same here for sure. Most people won't need an M2 Max or something similar for their daily stuff. If they are like me, the M1's will last for many years to come.

I still believe that owning an M1 MacBook Air is like the one chance we've had to pull the rabbit out of the hat on Apple. It's so freakin' amazing at a price point that is nowhere near to that of the M2's, etc..., and it still accomplishes anything that you'd need it to. It's been my go-to for like 2 years already, and still running pretty smooth.
