According to the Irish, "If you want to know where the Otherworld is, look over your left shoulder." Point being, I think these realms are in some way coterminous, but, in your language, at a different frequency.

Nicely said. Your description also sounds like how ... no matter what religion .... those vibrations can take on different interpretations, forms and stories unique to that people's ... that person's walk and way of seeing. I've found that Animism answers these questions to my satisfaction. I believe that the foundation of existence is consciousness, that there is no separation between Creator and Creation, and thus everything that exists is not only a frequency that you tune into but also a consciousness that you communicate with. These consciousnesses interact differently with each person, which is why archetypes are common across cultures, are often sought in similar ways, but vary wildly in their expressions. It means that, while your experience of the Gods may not equal to that of a great story of old, it is no less real and valid.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I like your explanation about connecting to the frequencies of the Universe which have been given names and rich myhological stories. I think you hit the nail on the head about what ALL religions are actualy about. Theological debates go round and round and create disscord and emnity between people when actually there is so little, if anything, to fight about. We all share this beautiful planet, we are all human. We all have the capacity to be kind, generous, creative beings who live in harmony with the Universe.

"I would come to beautiful places and I would want to build a deeper connection and the Christian god did not give that to me and so that's why I found my way to paganism..." Exactly. You sense something... but it isn't the god written about in ancient scrolls from the Arab desert.

Yeah I agree. Although I grew up Christian and went to church and all that, none of it really clicked for me, even after years of practice. I always preferred being in nature bc not only does it connect me to my ancestors, I believe I feel more alive and human. This is why I’m beginning to find paganism fascinating.
@caseybutt5553
@caseybutt5553 Жыл бұрын
@@winstonpelloski6204 And I think you'll also find it equally frustrating... because most of the sources of knowledge were destroyed by the Christians. Outside of a few sources - primarily Icelandic or written by Christians observing Pagans from a distance - there isn't much information available from a spiritual perspective. It was largely erased. It's a tragic loss of history and culture. Now it's a matter of picking up the pieces that are left and trying to make sense of it.

I tend to think of ideas like "frequencies" and "vibrations" as too new agey, but for me I think of it more in terms of "energy" - not corporeal beings, but certainly distinct and sentient.

Wonderful video. As a person raised christian who is now an eclectic pagan, I blend celtic and norse peganism, I loved hearing your thoughts. I too came to the conclusion a few years back that different dieties are aspects of the divine or the creator. I feel that who ever we have the strongest connection to is who we get to spend time with in the afterlife. My father, a devout catholic once told me that heaven is where we dress as priests and nuns and spend eternity singing and praising god. He didn't realize at the time that he started the push that led me to paganism. LOL I remember thinking, well my idea of heaven is a cabin in the deep woods with animals and a garden. If my father really wanted a heaven like that I dearly hope that is what he found, but I'm looking forward to my cabin in the woods. ❤

I agree the Gods are frequencies that we tune into when our vibration reaches the same wavelength. We become one with the Gods through ritualistic practice and the whole purpose of the ritual is to reach the same wavelength of the Gods. The whole of our spirituality is vibration and frequency, hence our spiritual being.

Yes, The general Pagan idea, now and in far ancient times, is that deity names are just labels for clusters of powers/frequencies which are experienced. They may be optionally personified and treated as people if so desired because in the absence of visual identification different personalities can only be distinguished by their differing powers. This Pagan approach to deities is called perceptheism because no claim is made about how others should perceive any particular deity or even the whole divine realm. (Talk to 100 people about the details of a labeled deity and you will get 100 different variations.) This is also why Pagans are free to invent their own deity labels if no existing deity fits their perceptions.

This is genuinely a wonderful video. Beautiful scenery, and I love your insights. I myself have a belief that entities and deities are empowered by those who believe in them; similar on the "if you're heading closer to that frequency, you feel more in tune with it" notes. Very much so a situation of "it doesn't matter if they're a physical being sitting in another realm or just a sensation of the universe" situation. They're still very much so real, though not tangible in the sense that some would want them to be. There definitely needs to be more conversation among pagans, or any spirituality/religious belief systems. Honest and open conversation is needed, it's how we grow. But, speaking as someone who has joined many MANY groups... That conversation is often not one had, at least not respectfully. Thank you for posting this!! I enjoyed it immensely, and want to see more from you as a result. -Wander

This really clears up some of my own ideas and perspective on my own beliefs. I mostly think along the lines of human will and divine creativity shaped non-primordial deities into being, and our belief is somewhat that which sustains them? And this kind of vibration theory really kinda clarifies it, in that the vibrations are branches from the primordial energy, and as we evolved and grew more “complex” we made those different branches? Or made them possible maybe? All in all, much to think about. Thank you for the video!

I really appreciate your making this video, Jacob. I had just posted on r/heathenry actually, asking folks what they think the Gods are and getting into the philosophy of it. It's disheartening how many people are vigorously against even having the discussion. I think it's an important one to have--after all, the very system of Western logical and philosophical thought is rooted in the ancient Greek pagans, so far be it from us to shirk the task to use our Gods-given minds to make sense of Them!

I'm Jewish and constantly evolving in my perspective on God. I converted from Christianity a few years ago, and part of the conversion process was deconstructing everything I was taught about God. It's been interesting because the fundamental essence of the Divine has never changed, just my knowledge and understanding of it. In deconstructing and reconstructing what God is to me, I feel I have a much deeper and more mature perspective. Funnily enough, what you're describing is not too different from what my current perspective is on the Divine, our souls, and the afterlife. Yasher koach! And may we all have the chutzpah to continue challenging our perceptions of the Universe and our place in it~

When I became a Germanic pagan many many years ago everything was based in that way, all the Gods/Goddess’s came from the Germanic pantheon, and I looked at the world through that lens, however as time has passed and I’ve experienced more I’ve changed how I see certain aspects, I’m still a Germanic Pagan, I still worship the Germanic deities, but maybe the way I do this has changed, subtle influences from life’s many lessons colouring my rituals and outlooks. Paganism is ever expanding, and our ideas expand with it creating a fresh way of looking at the old ideas, but without losing the heart of them.

I agree that I define them in terms of energy based on my experience. And the energy associated with different gods has very different feeling, just like being in the presence of different people or individuals comes with different energy. I just started looking up references on youtube to help my wife find her own path. I am certain we are all different and my experience can't totally guide her. I have always felt that my role is performative. The gods are very real and present wanting me to entertain or impress them. It is my place to show them I am worthy of attention and earn it through my actions. For years I felt, saw, and heard nothing and finally was spoken too... laughed at. I realized they are always there, but we do not always prove ourselves worthy of them.

I lean towards the animistic side. I believe the god Thor is thunder for example, it's literally his name after all, and electricity in general. I think he's a spirit that is intelligent, can communicate with us, and answer prayers. I don't think he's a big burley ginger with a hamme, I think that's something that either people came up with or Thor decided to appear like a group of people worshipping him. That logically means I think every thunder god is the same exact god. I think it's just a matter of how this goes perceived in a given culture because they want to be understood a little better by appearing similar to (insert ethnic group here) when interacting with them.

I think they are something we can't comprehend. So some of us see them as visitors walking the earth, some of us (seers and such) have been granted visions, some of us only feel the energy, and some of us feel nothing at all and see nothing. The same as other super natural things that not everyone witnesses or believes. Believing that they see every single ritual would say they are more wide spread than being an individual, saying they are nothing but feelings removes all credit from legends, myths, and visions. I just think it is impossible for us to comprehend what they are and that's ok, since they don't demand worship or strict adherence to anything.

That did change over time, because I came to see the power of belief as being in belief itself, which I later realised was basically the same as saying that there are no Gods or spirits or magic, but it's nice to believe in them... and my beliefs were unsustainable in the face of that realisation. In any case, I'm not a believer any more but this is an interesting perspective, so thanks for sharing it!

Fascinating. I've been pagan since 1979. A couple of years ago I did a probability analysis somewhat like yours, but chose to continue believing. Some of my reasons were experiential. Although I understand why my experience isn't proof, I've had experiences that are difficult to dismiss with the usual debunking answers. Part was pragmatic. In my decade as an agnostic, I longed for a faith that would feel good without demanding I unquestioningly accept absurdities or atrocities. I can live without music or chocolate, but why would I? There was no fear of the wrong answer, I refuse to believe any entity worthy of being called benign would be petty enough to punish someone for not groveling. From a carefully considered theory that some of what we now call supernatural may be something we don't yet understand and the practical choice that my beliefs have some personal benefits and no downside (other than bigots, but they hate atheists too). I enjoyed your parallel experience with a different outcome.

I really love your interpretation❤, and I think your approach to paganism and spiritualism is one of the most grounded, open and healthy ones I have experienced yet. And I agree. As someone who has studied archeology and anthropology, I have seen many different approaches to religion, recent and ancient. And though every religion has its own stories and entities, there are concepts that exist universally, like mother earth, a father-God, a got of death, moon and Sun. They exist because they are part on human experience and interaction with our world. I am very much a person of science, but I can't deny that there is just a special feeling about places like this waterfall, big mountains, deep woods etc. I can't help but touch old trees when I pass by because they have an energy and wisdom to them that's just... There. This is why my personal approach to spiritualism is very similar. I am not naming any names and I am not assuming to know those deities/energies/gods/spirits, whatever you call them, but I am mindful of them existing in our natural world. Listening, feeling and respecting whatever we feel there brings us closer to ourselves and our humanity. We are so often distracted in modern times that we just forgot to listen to everything around us. But as soon as I smell a campfire, hear drums, experience a thunderstorm etc. there is just something primal there speaking to this memory engraved in our DNA. We feel it because it was our ancestors reality and fight for survival for hundreds of thousands of years. This is what spiritualism means to me. Feeling this connection again.

Speaking with my philosopher's hat on I would say that we mislead ourselves when we start with a ''what are/ what is'' question... because the enquiry gets snarled up in two modes of thought which have the historical weight of 2000 years of monotheistic theology behind them. The first is ontology (theories of being), which most people have been exposed to via Christian and Islamic ''onotlogical arguemnts for the existence of (one) God''. The second set of luggage is Aristotelian logic, filtered via Saint Thomas Aquinas, which offers an etiher/ or logic ( exclusive disjuntion) that something EITHER exists or it does not. The language in which we think about Pagan deities is 99% the language of the conquering monotheisms, and the language carries a heft dose of monotheistic values with it. To 'return to the ancient ( pre-monotheistic) ways of thinking about things'', it might be best to try breaking out of King James' vocabulary and grammar of thought, and have a go at learning something exotic.... for example modern Icelandic, which has a somewhat different grammar of thought. Its not easy - I am struggling with it after a year - but it is beautiful and it gives acess to the Eddas and works like the 14th century ''Mariugraut'' poems. These are a treasure, because while ostensibly about the Virign Mary, they are chock-full of Pagan concepts and poetic-philosophical material. Many of the honorific titles and ' kennings' which are applied to Jesus, for example, are still dripping with Norse divinity attributions.... such as Jesus being described as ''Lord of the Shrine of Lightnings'' - Odin and Thor and Freya are woven into these writings, and the Icelandic langauge has changed VERY little since the (incomplete) Christianisation of the Icelandic people. Even today the highly literate and intelligent Icelandic people do not fret much about whether the nature -spirits and Elves are ''either real or unreal''. Ah, the cultural advantages of having a culture VERY far away from Rome and Jerusalem and Mecca! :) A zillion thanks for your work, its always thought-provoking!

I've had a rough time this month, ever since 17th of May (Norway's National Day), and with the constant raining and thundering above my head (i honestly feel Tor is mocking me!), i have had a hard time with myself, and with the gods's existance, thinking myself being crazy because "what if they Aren't real?".. I dont have any alters or statues of the Norse gods, only pendants of Vegvisir and Mjolnir, and a statue of Buddha... the only communication i do with the gods, is talking To them, and hoping for a respons back from them, in the ways a leaf falls, or the sounds of birds making, or even the animals i see during my general walks outside. With the days being named after the gods they are named after tho, i almost Always feels; A sence of Justice or Thuesdays (Tyr's Dag), Wiser on Wednesday (Odin's Dag), Stronger on Thursday (Tor's Dag), and love with myself on Fridays (Frigg's Dag). And in terms of wherever the gods are real - to My own thinking at least - i can't help but thinking, since it is Wednesday today, that: - The Norse gods must be real. - Christian gods is debatable, but sure, they could be (I like to think of myself as a Pre-christianized Norse man). - The Greek gods, while they too could and must be real, could Also be confused with the Norse gods, not in terms of names but in terms of duties (Njord and Poseidon, Tor and Zeus, Etc.), so they too Must be true. - Egyptian Mythology too is a maybe, because it feels stationed to One place! All these gods's mythologies, Or religions, all share the same thing that, they comes from stories, which Is true has been told time and time again from different people, but they Always consist of Some kind of true event, or there's always Something true in the tale from the story! To quote Ecbert from the show: *"Well, if there were no gods, then anyone could do anything, and nothing would matter. You could do as you liked and nothing would be real and nothing would have meaning or value. So, even if the gods don't exist, it's still neccesary to have them!"*. [Sorry for the long text, this is just my own thinkings]

@@KellySmithDavis firstly, It feels ironic complaining about the rain, when there's countries out there still dehydrated or being water-lacked. Secondly, yeah, hope so too. I mean i dont mind the rainIng itself, because the plants and nature outside gets benefited by it, Nor do i mind the cold(ness) coming from it, because i can handle it. The only bad thing about it is, all though it happened just once, when it thunders i hear the wagon of Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjost, and when i try to sleep in my complete dark room, the flash from the thunder strikes my room with light.. Edit: And i have a slight suspicion that, the mocking or attention-seeking of his, comes from the fact that i carry Mjølner necklace, and/or that i've asked him hundreds of times that i'm ready to be struck lightning down at, Because then at least i'd know he actually Does hear and care about me! 😂

I've been an anti-theist for the better part of a decade. The phrase I started saying to myself was one that you mentioned; that gods are aspects (in my case I said embodiment) of nature. That allowed me to be open enough to start seriously exploring the Old Ways. I've just started my journey, and I already feel more connected to nature, and the gods.

I’m going to be honest, I’m having a hard time with the idea that the gods that we know are just frequencies that we can experience rather than entities we can encounter. We’re gonna have to sit down when we can and talk about it so I can better understand. With that said, I’m proud of you for opening up and taking the risk of sharing your thoughts as you explore your path, because it shouldn’t be a risk at all but as we can clearly see via a couple of comments already, not everyone understands how to communicate amicably or cordially. You also had Kaia and I cackling in the last few seconds! 🤣

I honestly believe two concepts lol. Haven’t quite found the way to combine them in conversation because I still believe in the spirit world where the gods literally exist, but how we interact with in our physical realm is through tuning ourselves through ritual. And good, I am glad my frozen bath got some laughs 😂

@@TheWisdomOfOdin Now THAT makes sense to me. I can get behind our avenues of direct connection and communication to these spirits in their realms is done via aligning our inner frequencies to those of their’s in order to sense and experience them in our own realm. So to put it in a very mundane modern way, their frequencies are like their cell phone numbers- we gotta dial them direct, country and area code and all, to interact with them.

I am just coming from a monotheistic belief so I am all sorts of confused right now. My biggest thing is I see everything that is so beautiful in this world (although sometimes it’s hard to see it through the bad) and not believe in some sort of creator or creators or overseers if such things. I kind of feel we are all to be overseers yet we simply suck at it. Idk. I hope I don’t sound dumb. 🙂
