Ration meter for the crew effects crew happiness. If it drops too low the maneuverability, and speed, of the ships drops, including in battle. It will also make mates that don't like you steal a ship. The round earth society is a way to increase your luck. You have to donate about 51% of your wealth (including what's in the bank) to increase your luck 1 point I believe. I can't recall exactly what it was to max out but I believe the minimum amount to trigger it was 6 gold. IIRC it takes something like 8 doublings to guarantee max fortune so around 1,600 gold, but it can take more. The best thing to do is buy up tons of silver, carpet, art, or gold, fully load your ships with food then start donating 51% repeatedly with what's left, ideally enough to finish in one shot. It is a hidden stat, the only way to check it is to go to the fortune teller and ask her to read your fortune. She'll say different things based on your luck stat. You want "What a strong fortune, you have nothing to fear in this life." That's 100% then you study to maintain it. Luck increases odds of getting the best cannons, and figureheads, at the secret shipyards that sell them, when fully upgraded and aligned with you. Cannons are self explanatory and the figureheads ward off storms and creatures. It also improves outcomes in duels, mates liking you and tile against them leaving you. Never put a mate with bad luck in charge of a ship (they drown in storms and you lose the ship) or let them navigate/negotiate. You can't increase their luck.

Agreed. Would love a Stardew type updated version of this with the dueling system from this more or less the same. Improved ship combat and customization. The current multiplayer online thing does nothing for me like this gem did. Hated the hurricanes though and if you fail game over. I also like PTO 2 also made by KOEI.

i keep thinking if I ever get my code game up, I would love to make something that built off this; I'm always surprised UW Online has been running so long, but they won't revisit a single player game? I wanted to be a cartographer (and pirate) growing up because of New Horizons, very cool to see you became a geographer because of the series 😄

They could put out a similar type game on today's mobile phones... ...but in-app purchases would sour the experience.

@@heathmcrigsby Similar here. Most people's top list is action heavy. Genghis Khan was fun, Gemfire, Simcity. I also liked the Populous games. Romance 2 is my jam, I just got into Romance 3.

It was definitely a stand out super solid amazing KOEI game, the height of KOEI golden era for SNES for certain!

I was fortunate to play the original UW with my mother and grandfather when I was a kid. My grandfather knew almost everything about the game so I didn't have to worry about esoteric stat values. He also had some helpful advice, such as "If you sail to africa during the winter months you'll rarely encounter a storm, if ever" After watching this video just now...I understand why people would be turned off by the original, especially with the lack of detailed info in-game.

Had the same thought, is the bones of this game are amazing and just waiting for some legendary hack of it.

It's open world...ish. You can explore the vast world to the point of losing grip with the game's objectives, but there's not much in the way of side quests. It's more like a true sandbox where your imagination fills the gaps.

Been playing game 1 since I was 4, and only last year picked up game 2 for the first time. My biggest criticism is that 2 of the characters, Joao and Ernst, can't go to Japan at all until late in their story arcs. It sucks, because I liked Joao's story the most, of course, as a fan of game 1. Like, you can GO there, sure, sail all around it and even find the far-away supply port of Hokkaido, but you cannot discover Sakai or Nagasaki until the story gets there, and it was a huge blow to me, so much so that I put down the Joao scenario entirely and then did not play Ernst when I went to make sure he could go there before playing him, but discovered he couldn't That said, for best "open world" experience, I liked Pietro, even if he is a wuss in battle. Storywise, you pretty much just gotta pay off an EZ debt, then you are free to screw around as much as you'd like, with little direction. Of course, you CAN do that with anyone, but from a roleplay perspective, I found his scenario made the most sense for it. Technically, you will want to adventure to "win", but I had a great time trading. The game highly incentivizes returning to Europe every 6 months in this game, so you can renew your tax-free permit for trade in ports your country "controls". At least insofar as you wish to engage with trade. The "discoveries" as they are called in game, are a really good innovation as well, and even add another layer to the educational content of the game. Catalina is also prohibitive, since she technically has no country, even if you turn yourself in to the crown and remove your enemy status. So, when you invest in any given port, the best you can do is *remove* other percents, bringing the port to total neutral. That said, there IS a "defection" mechanic in the game, wherein you pledge your allegiance to a different nation than the starting one, and I did not think to try and see if I could use that to give Cat a home. Biggest issue with Ali is having a home port of Istanbul lol, though I was very fond of the straight-up trader story he had. Pietro gives you the best of all worlds overall tho, with Genoa being only somewhat out of the way, compared to the 3 (4 if you count Cat) characters who have ports on the Atlantic coast of Europe. Funny story, I have noticed that if I do not play as Italy, as a nation they have never managed to compete at all without me-- everyone else has made plays for power and ports from time to time, but Italy just never gets past Genoa without my direct control. Actually similar to UW1, where if you did not do the work yourself, Portugal would always be the poorest of the 3 countries. Taken altogether, it gives me the impression that Italy was maybe the scenario designed for the more "Open world" minded players. Otto you could make an argument for too, I suppose, but he is such a crappy sailor it is painful sometimes lol. It is a hard trade-off to make for the privilege of a homeport in Northern Europe. I could say a lot more about 2, but if you played 1, you will love it- everything is there that you missed and more. Worst I can say in comparison, is that I liked the portraits better in UW1. There were less M8s to hire overall, but their names, portraits, and stats all painted a complete picture of each of them. and they all felt very distinct from one another to me.

My GF is huge into horror stuff, new and old. She's playing through Evil Within 2 right now. I like some of it like Silent Hill 2 but it's not usually something I'm that into.
