Thank you for this post. I rarely see the one sub-type of memoir that I'm engaged in writing, i.e. the historical memoir. Yes, I am writing a personal memoir and the other dimension of the memoir is a historical period, the women's movement. I am also bringing a couple of unique themes to this herstory/historical memoir. What I've learned about historical memoirs is that it requires more than the authors story. Check, clearly this story requires multiple other sub-stories that weave with mine. Are there other sources on historical memoir I should study?

Love this. Started out writing a travel memoir but found out life doesn't follow neat story structure, so turned it into a semi-autobiographical novel instead.

An autobiographical memoir is a misnomer. You either write one or the other. You either write an autobiography (all the details of your life) or you write a memoir (a component of your life from one aspect). Have you seen this video on the difference: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eZ9xrdeHtLrdeKM.html

What type of memoir do you most like to read? For me, it is travel lifestyle memoir and, particularly, if it has a French theme!

What is a how to memoir.

It's a memoir written in a format where you show the reader how to do something that you are skilled at. For example, a lot of well known writers have written how to memoirs where they use their life to illustrate how they became a writer and share their knowledge of writing with the reader so that the reader knows how to be a writer too. But you could apply it to any skill you have.
