@@NE-ex5wrfrom what I can gather from the Internet, there were originally 3 different versions of Tangled in development at Disney since the mid-90s. The first was called “Rapunzel Unbraided” and it was about two teenagers named Claire and Vince who have opposite personalities and who hate each other. Claire is a fashion-obsessed diva with a pixie cut and Vince is a pizza delivery boy with a chip on his shoulder; kind of like a teenage Shrek. They get magically transported into the story of Rapunzel where they are forced to embody the roles of Rapunzel and the Prince (here named Bastion) while the real Rapunzel and Bastion have been magically transformed into woodland animals. They all have to work together to finish the story of Rapunzel and defeat Mother Gothel or something like that. It got cut because according to Glen Keane (a former animator at Disney who was set to direct Tangled before having a heart attack in 2008. He recovered and 12 years later, he directed Over The Moon for Netflix instead) he and the studio heads of Disney wanted a more sincere retelling of the Rapunzel story. In reality of course, even though Michael Eisner encouraged Glen Keane and company to go for a Shrek-type approach to making the Rapunzel Unbraided film, it was ultimately Shrek that killed Rapunzel Unbraided cause even though Rapunzel Unbraided was in development long before Shrek was released, Shrek came out first and everyone at Disney except Eisner didn’t want to look as though they’re copying the competition, especially in a way that looked like they were satirizing themselves which was what Shrek was already doing. So Disney shifted gears and changed the title to simply “Rapunzel” and they wanted to go with a more classical, darker approach for the Rapunzel story that was closer to its original roots (although of course since fairy tales such as Rapunzel were always orally transmitted across multiple different cultures across multiple different continents across multiple different centuries, it’s hard to locate the story of Rapunzel’s real roots but you get the picture). Ultimately for one reason or another, they never proceeded with Rapunzel so they went back to Rapunzel Unbraided and were set to release it between 2009-2010 but then Glen Keane (who was directing Rapunzel Unbraided at the time) suffered that heart attack I mentioned and he was too busy convalescing from the heart attack to finish up with Rapunzel Unbraided. His co-director at the time also didn’t want to come back and decided to pursue other projects. So in the meantime, rather than waiting for Glen Keane to recover from his heart attack, Disney replaced him with the current directors of Tangled we know today and they overhauled Rapunzel Unbraided, scrapping everything from it, and they redesigned it into the Tangled movie that finally got released in 2010. Hope this info dump helps.

@@bubbles7118 That's genius, and gives me imagery for that the screenplay could've looked like during the song. She could be looking at her books for the millionth time, and it could fade from her reading each book into her as the daughter of a fisherman and a blacksmith, with the book she's reading being different each time. For the third, it wouldn't be led by her imagining herself as a princess in one of her books since it isn't just a fantasy for her to be a princess like it is for her to be the daughter of a fisherman or blacksmith. The story she creates is practically her reality. Or maybe instead of her being the daughter of the fisherman and blacksmith, it could be her observing the real characters from her books, with the story about the princess *actually* being her.

​@@CelestialBug And at the part about wondering if other girls make their own endings to stories, it could show her writing a story where she's the main character and setting it on a pile of other stories she'd written, implying she spent her time writing and bookbinding instead of painting on walls (which realistically would have run out of room rather quickly compared to how long it takes to write new books for herself)

I always wondered about how Rapunzel learned certain things, cause she only has 3 books but she seems to know a lot more than she should. Like she learned cooking from the cookbook, that makes sense. But where did she learn to chart the stars? Where did she learn the rules to chess? I suppose Gothel could’ve taught her to play but I can’t imagine she ever sat down to play it with her so why would she? And did she also teach her what a birthday is? Cause I don’t think she learned that from those 3 books either. Things like painting and sewing and playing guitar she could’ve taught herself, but where did she learn about hide and seek? Again I doubt Gothel played hide and seek with her lol, maybe Pascal was secretly sneaking her new books from a library somewhere and returning them before Gothel could notice
