Just so everybody knows, I’ve tried a lot of the cheap knock off brands. I haven’t reviewed them because they were abysmal. These two looked like they had some possibilities so I did try them. But all these brands that everybody’s recommending? Please don’t ask me to do so. I have thrown away many of these sets and I have no intention of re-buying anything just to review. Sorry. 😃 Remember what I always tell you: if you go for the cheapest supplies, they’ll hobble your talent. If you aren’t getting results like mine while using cheap markers-it might not be your skill at all. It could be your supplies.

Sandy Allnock lol I don’t blame you but Crayola had a marker set it has to be alcohol because that’s what he was testing and it performed very well I think it made top 4. I personally will never buy them for myself but I do have a 7 year old grand daughter whom I can by them for to use. I’m not about to let her start with the good stuff and one day she can inherit my copic full set, yah I have full set syndrome.

Bottom line - you get what you pay for in art supplies. Don't use my Copics a whole lot but love the nib and how they blend. As I responded to another comment here the SN pens are not in the same class as Copics. Thanks for your hard work in swatching them and giving your reviews. You have never steered me wrong in selecting supplies! TFS

I so appreciate your expertise in assessing the three alcohol markets. I love your artwork as it is fabulous. I learn so much each time I watch your videos. Funny thing is is that I don’t draw or color images as they don’t turn out well hardly ever. I do use lots of different media in my style of artwork but nothing where real ability and talent come in. I know my limitations so it helps me appreciate a ton yours.

Great review, Sandy! I’m a firm believer that quality is most important with art supplies, and it’s best to get a few of a really good product, than to try to make do with an inferior product with lots of colors. As you noted and demonstrated in your video, you can create your own colors by blending a few colors together and the end result is beautiful!

Love my Copic markers . Thanks for reviewing these additional markers. When all was completed and you showed the images all at one time the Copic it's clearly the best blended and you could see that even at you were working with the individual markers. I agree with the Tombo assessment you gave, very expensive for non refill and partial dry markers. Thanks again!

I love the look of watercolor and prefer it to the look of alcohol colored images so I've never been tempted to purchase the Copic markers, but I find your reviews interesting and helpful in case I change my mind! Lol!I've also learned that I don't need all the different products and mediums that are out there. I agree with you all the way that choosing quality and artist grade products are going to be the best for helping one improve one's skills. So I would rather have fewer different supplies but quality for the mediums I love.

I don't think there is any other marker that can compete with Copic. If the refills get too expensive then I can always find the best color match in another brand, like Sandy said, alcohol ink is alcohol ink. The color selections and feel of the pen is the most important to me. I have tried the SN and hated the feel of the pen and the nibs they used, they seemed too bulky and stiff. I also bought a set of the Ohuhu and don't care for the color selections, they are too bright for me, however, I do use them from time to time and find they great to have when crafting with someone who just wants to do coloring and no blending. Because the Ohuhu's are so inexpensive so it is a good option for anyone who just wants to color or experiment with color blending with the selection they have. I've also purchased a few other off brands but they don't have refill inks so I use my Copic inks to refill but it's really not worth the time it takes to refill them. AND the biggest plus, if you have taken Sandy's classes, she uses the Copic markers and teaches us how to blend them, I'm not an artist, but have learned much about blending using the copic chart (from Sandy) and will stick with what I am comfortable with. Sandy, thank you for the video as always, enjoyed seeing the different products.

My go to brand of alcohol markers are DickBlick. I invested in these markers because both the Copic sets, individual Copic pens and the Copic refills were just to expensive for me. I have some Copics as well as other brands and they all work well together. I like my DickBlicks even though they do not refill. Just replace as needed. TomBow is a reject for me for several reasons. I have moved my waterbased markers to another table (even though I have many) and have found I don't really need them. I love my alcohol pens.

Thanks for this. In the last year and a half I have spent a ton of money on copics. I chose them for their quality the fact that they are refillable and that the nibs are replaceable. I am on disability and don't have a lot of play money each month play focused on getting markers rather than refills. Just in case someone who looks at this who can get word back to Copic, and maybe they might care, I am going to be super tweaked if their half size bottles don't come with a half size price.

Have you tried the Blick studio brush markers? They are refillable and have replacement nibs. They just released several more colors too. I’ve been pretty happy with them. Right now my big project is matching them with the corresponding Copic colors so I can use them with Copic classes and the Copic numbering system easier. (Like most markers - the numbering system seems pretty arbitrary for these). I don’t like the shape of the barrel as well, but otherwise, they have a pretty similar feel to copics when using them. Certainly one to check into. :)

Just checked their website and only 8 markers can be purchased individually. Ugh. I just filled out a color chart with my 120 set and I've noticed that there are several pairs of colors that are basically indentical.

You could purchase the closest color of alcohol ink from another brand and refill with that. I have Copic and Blick Studio markers. I refill all the Copic markers and most of my Blick Studio markers with Copic Various Ink Refill (the old Copic ink refill). I also use Blick, Brea Reese, and Ranger alcohol ink in my Blick Studio markers. I’m careful with my Copic markers and only use Copic ink in those, but in my Blick Studio markers I don’t mind using any brand of alcohol ink.

Sandy, I did try the Studio 71: which developed weird blobs of material on the tips, and they re-sent me more, but I just couldn't use them, I was so turned off! Next I bought Ohuhus, and they were fine so I practiced coloring with them for a few months. Then, I saw Michaels had several Copics on sale so I bought a few and fell in love with them! The brushes are better and I love them. Now I am up to about 50 and buy a set that will blend every other week. I plan to have quite a few by the end of the year, and have let my family know if they want to buy me anything, let it be a Copic! LOL. Very interesting video! I have a mini collection of copics, bought one by one at Michaels with a coupon. Still not a colorist...had high hopes that somehow Copics would magically make me better at coloring, but not so much...still trying! That said and having read all the comments about other brands, it would be interesting to have a brand that would work for "the rest of us" non experts! Copics clearly rule for the experts...so what is the next best brand out there with cost being a consideration? Sort of like the watercolor comparisons...I'm never buying Daniel Smith, but I've seen you paint amazingly with less brands!

I am probably the only person who doesn't like Copics. I was given a small set and didn't like the over saturation. I am based in the UK and I use Windsor and Newton. They have Promarkers double ended with bullet and chisel; their brush markers are bullet and 'brush'. They blend really well and don't over saturate the paper. Results for me are better than Copic. Infinitely cheaper at an average of £2.50 per marker as opposed to Copic £6.99. W&N are not refillable but at this price point ...

We all absolutely adore Copics...and like you and many others, we have invested a LOT of $$ and our loyalty. So it just doesn't make any sense for the company to make these changes. Thank you for this comparison with alcohol markers! , definitely agree with you as far as cost and color palette. I have Tombow Abt, Copic, Chameleon.. With Copic blending it's a breeze, Chameleon follows Copic, but with Tombow particularly it blends easier on Bristol smooth (my opinion) still need to work more blending techniques to find the best cardstock. Do you have any preference as far as cardstock type? Thank you for sharing this video.

I’m partial to my neenah; if alcohol ink won’t blend on that, techniques have to change to accommodate the pens much less the paper.

Sandy, I bought a bundle of Nuvo Alcohol Markers which have individual packs of three in the same colour family for blending which is what I need as I am blending challenged. Seriously. lol I think you can get refills for them. I'm wondering if you've ever tried them. I don't need the best of the best, because I only make cards for family & friends & am not the most talented person on the planet.

My first set of markers were Chameleon, which are ok, but feel like I’m wielding a sword. I have a full set of Copics that are for my use only because of the investment and because people seem to think you need to apply CPR pressure when using markers. I have a small set of Color it! markers, I used these pre-quarantine and let friends use them (these and the Chameleon markers have squished nibs). I just bought a 120 set of Arteza markers on sale for $96.00, they have refills and replaceable nibs. I bought them mostly for practicing with the airbrush. If you sold the Jellyfish (the one you did on black paper) picture on Society6 I would buy it in a heartbeat!

Sandy, how does the Graph’It fineliner nib compare to the optional “Super Fine” nib for original square classic Copic markers? Is the Copic Super fine nib a lot thicker?

I recently found some alcohol markers called Art n Fly. They are reasonably priced, refillable and have replacements for the nibs. I think they only have around 80 colors so far but have plans to expand their line. They blend pretty well. My only complaint is that cap color doesn’t match ink in some cases and there are some colors that are very similar to each other. They have a website and can also be found on Amazon.

Lizzo Manizzo yes, I colored some flower stamps. They blended pretty well. As with any new medium you have to play to see how they work, but I’ve been impressed so far but plan to do some detailed coloring. I also ordered some Croma Flagship alcohol markers (note they also have cheaper sets called Katia and Lite which aren’t refillable) that will have refills available as well as open stock eventually. I’m interested to see how they are. I read a review from an illustrator and he said they are the closest equivalent to Copics he’s seen in his 15 years as an illustrator. They also have a website and can be found on Amazon. They’re a bit cheaper than Copics and have some available in sets as small as 12 markers up to the full set of 216 which is a bit pricey but come in a really nice case.
