I think this calls for a video of places similar to Katz's that don't break the bank. A video on value for a single quality meal and not something you have to split for value. In philly we have Hershel's East Side Deli which is a great value compared to katz's.

My grandfather took me to Katz’s first time in 1951; I’m now 74 and still enjoy going there for the pastrami. There is enough meat in the sandwich to feed four people. It is an institution for New Yorkers. When I was in the Army during the Vietnam war, my father sent me a Katz’s salami; which continued the tradition, since my grandfather sent him a Katz’s salami while he fought in the Pacific during WW2. There is a neon sign that has been there for over 80 years that says: “Send a salami to your boy in the Army”. I like Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray Tonic; second choice is Dr. Brown’s Cream Soda.

I’m sure if you stand out side and ask randomly for someone to buy you a sandwich someone will. A lot of people will eat there as a special occasion so buying an extra sandwich wouldn’t be a big deal if it’s like a once in a lifetime or annual visit. Pastrami on rye with pickles and mustard is one of my all time favourite sandwiches - that one looks out of this world. It is pricey (I’d assume a good deli sandwich in the UK is about £8- $9.70 at today’s exchange rates), but as a one off, I’d pay $26 to try one!

There is an old addage in the food business that states: "it does not matter what you charge as long as the quality and experience remains consistent"; this is why Katz's can get away with charging $26 for a pastrami sandwich. Before too long, it will be $27 for the same sandwich and I predict their business will be as strong as ever.

Long lines are the only thing that put me off. You really have to commit to going there. I also love the way New York does Pizza by the slice. Not a European thing although that Joe's Pizza looks like they use a ridiculous amount of Cheese. No one knows Pizza like you Jon so have to take your advice here. Everytime I've visited Katz (albeit, i've only been 3 times as I'm from the UK lol) There was hardly a queue at all, maybe 5 or 6 people. The first time I went, i was flustered because I was in the queue and didn't know what to have and didn't have much time to look at the options. lol. Now i know to just stick with the classic Pastrami on Rye (Corned Beef if I feel like it) with mustard and a Knish for good measure. Heading back over in February and can't wait!

To put this into better perspective for those not living in the area: You are not paying $26 for a sandwich. You are paying for exorbitant labor costs, monstrous utilities and rent costs and a sandwich. Guys behind the counter are making at least $25/hour. If the business owner doesn't own the building, their rent is at least $50,000 a month. A MONTH.

Went on a self guided food tour of NYC last month. Katz lives up to all of the hype. Joe's was one of the better pizza places (I tried 10 different ones). Did not try Magnolia, it was on the list but did not get around to it.

Having just came back from Vegas/NYC the price of food is very expensive now. Katz does look amazing and I’m sure you couldn’t eat much after that. The price of drinks is what got me more than the food. A lot of UK travellers are really feeling the pinch of the price increases in the US. I want to get back to Vegas but the flight and Hotel prices are ridiculous at the moment. Thanks for all you do John. Always helped me when I visit NYC.

Loving your content, I'm a huge NYC fan, love the city and I think you nailed it with Joe's Pizza. Maybe at one time it was a good slice, but I find that something has changed over the years. I was there two months ago I brought three of my friends from Toronto and none of my friends were impressed with the Joe's Pizza, btw it was cash only, I'm not a fan of the cash only establishment and that includes Peter Luger's. Best pizza we had on our last trip was John's on Bleeker. Thanks for the great NYC videos.

Another great video! Though I have never tried Katz's, the sandwich is worth it. It is about an entire day's-worth of food, so that is about what one would spend on a tight budget in NYC. I agree that Magnolia is a tourist trap. I have been to other locations and was not impressed. I can see, however, how some people would like it. It is now a classic NY spot.

I've been to all three places (lived in Westchester County from 1987 to 2003 and was in and out of the city 5 to 6 times a week) Katz's is iconic and unique and is worth a visit, not only for it's high quality, old school deli food but also for the atmosphere and the experience - prices were much lower when I last visited but the servings are huge. I always loved 2nd Ave Deli and the frumpy, grumpy waitresses. Joe's is good but, in my humble opinion, a bit ordinary - my nostalgic favorite is Arturo's on Houston - delicious, coal fired pies (NO SLICES), good draft beer and affordable cocktails, simple, carafe wines in a very authentic no nonsense atmosphere with a piano player and jazz on some nights and a very rambunctious crowd (but NYC pizza nuts are VERY opinionated, myself included) I visited Magnolia's in the early days before it really blew up. I'm not always a fan of cupcakes - I think they're cutesy and trendy and frankly, usually on the dry side and overly frosted. The old fashioned southern style cakes and pies are much better and very authentic - moist, huge and intensely flavorful - I remember a stellar red velvet, a sublime coconut layer cake, killer old style chocolate cake, derby pie, buttermilk pie and lemon meringue and my favorite, carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. I loved the old wooden screen doors, the antique, mismatched cake stands and plates and coffee mugs and the overall grandmotherish atmosphere. Oh, try a Manhattan coffee soda sometime - sounds strange but they're delicious with a bagel or deli sandwich! Great channel, guys - always interesting and worth watching👍

I've been fooled by the fake joe's pizza before 🤣 Also, I recommend Bleeker Street Pizza, Scarr's, and Emmy Squared for pizza. And I'm surprised to here of someone who's been to Magnolia and never had the banana pudding. I thought that's what they were really known for (and frankly, it's the only reason worth going. there are WAY better bakeries in the city).
