The title of this one can be taken quite negatively. Some can see it as a statement that the Saturn library is bad in general and that I’m simply saying these games are ok. Not the case. I’m making an argument that not all games typically seen in some negative light are unworthy of being played. Even games that aren’t traditionally seen as good or great, can be worth a play.

Low key, I've always really liked Sonic 3D Blast, I always have a lot of really chill fun when I play it. The Saturn version is just gorgeous, too. And one of the best parts is both the Saturn AND Genesis versions have totally different but equally amazing soundtracks

Sonic 3d blast could have been amazing if it had track ball support and 2 player simultaneous/split screen. It kind of has that Marble Madness vibe.

I agree the Saturn version of Virtua Racing is good. The Genesis version I feel like actually controls much much better but overall the Saturn version has more options and features which slightly gives it the edge. I unfortunately don't own the 32x version but I hear that version is a better version of the Genesis version but it lacks the extra features of the Saturn version.

I'd include Sonic R too. Use the shoulder buttons in conjunction with the directional input for sharp turns; alone for gentle turns; both at once for a hard brake. Don't use directionals for acceleration, but the button acceleration instead. It's not hard, folks.

10:25 The flashing effect on that lightgun game is brutal. I can almost feel it in the back of my eyes. It feels like the game is attempting to reprogram my brain.

The best part of the Sega Saturn version of Sonic 3D Blast was the 3D chaos emerald stages. It made me wish there was a true 3D Sonic game for the system. Heck, I would have been very happy with a 2D side-scrolling Sonic game, since the Saturn was very powerful with 2D, and maybe still having 3D bonus stages. In short, Sonic Mania for the Saturn. I'll never understand why Sega made some of the decisions they made.

i got toshiden ura on the saturn ending era where it was so difficult to find any games at retail, and i loved it. it even had 2 hidden boss battles that where tough, that kept me coming back

If I may add one more game, I feel the Saturn port of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night gets a bad reputation. Yeah, the port is subpar and that really shouldn't have happened on a 2-D powerhouse console like the Saturn but it's still...fun? I get a bit jealous that we never got to play as that version's Maria anywhere else. And I did want to explore those Saturn exclusive areas (even if Koji Igarashi insists it's non-canon). Unfortunately, the devs that were in charge of the port just didn't really get the Saturn. A lot of the game is using VDP1, when it should've been using VDP2. Background details that are never interacted with or are barely noticeable could've been culled in order to improve performance.

The major issue for me is that a lot of the common games are pretty average in retrospect, especially in the US. It's been tough to find decent games for a decent price and that makes it rough to collect for the Saturn. I can find better games at a cheaper price on other platforms in this current video game economy. PlayStation is way easier to get into, to this day.

It’s all a matter of opinions and it matters what the gamer thinks of the game, their perception of it! Not every game is playable but I truly believe even the worst game can be desirable to someone.

I was honestly disappointed when I bought my Saturn version of Street Fighter: The Movie back in the day as I was expecting a port of the arcade version, much like you were. Yes, I think I am the only person who actually liked that game and would love to own a cabinet of it. The game was so broken it was actually fun, provided you were playing against another person. Special moves did not have cooldown and you could do one right into another, throw counters, new moves like Sagat's hypnotizing eye, and more. The home ports were morphed into Super Turbo which was not a bad thing, just not what I was expecting on top of the visual downgrade. BTW, I liked how this video seemed less scripted out vs your previous videos. The casual tone and delivery seemed more relaxed, more of like you were just chatting with us vs trying to make a presentation. Keep it up!

I enjoy 3D blast on Saturn more than most Sonic games, it's probably a controversial opinion, but I can't help liking what I like.

I've always said SF the Movie game was not that bad. Its like a reskinned SSF 2 Turbo with additional mechanics. Looks like ass but plays fine. Great video. I like the more relaxed "steaming" style of this one with your commentary. Glad to see new videos from you!

Man in the mid 90s I really thought Sega Saturn and Sony Playstation were pretty even, I loved both of em equally (preordered PS; picked up Saturn a few months later so I guess I'm more partial to PS), but now it's easy to see how much better the PS is over the poor Sega. I wish I kept all my old systems instead I gave them all away... Great video.

New intro!? I actually miss the little Outrun car already! :D Good to see some love for the "B Games". Definitely agree regarding Virtua Racing though. Sega at this point were still focussed on "Arcade perfect" being the dream as it was in the 16 bit era. Sony didn't have arcade heritage, so didn't give a crap about that. Sega did catch up with the Dreamcast, hence some of the Naomi ports like Virtua Tennis and Crazy Taxi having incredible home versions. But again, they were a generation behind the curve :(

I believe the reason for Toshinden's appeal was and still is the strong art direction for the characters. It creates a strong personality that transcends the extremely average gameplay. I guess it pays to have your characters designed by an excellent manga artist😉 Music was pretty rockin' too.

I was unaware that Crypt Killer was commonly thought to be a bad game, i bought it a few years back and had a lot of fun playing it, Gale Racer is also a perfectly playable game and just like you say "it has Sega DNA in there" so its really a must for any fan of Sega racing games, as is Virtua Racing thinking about it.

Great games selection. I really like Toshinden URA on the console, there are many codes to unlock characters, the intro video is superb, and I like the gameplay. Also Virtua Racing, In the Hunt or Sonic 3D are games I also enjoyed.

This is a really good video. I like these sort of discussions where someone shares their appreciation for b-tier videogames that are often dismissed as trash. I'm reminded of Pauline Kael who often praised the virtues of "movie trash," and believe there must be a videogame cousin to that. And you can easily find far worse Saturn titles than the ones shown here. I'm a little surprised that you considered Zero Divide for this compilation. I consider that game an A-tier title that stands tall with the best 3D fighters on the console (VF Remix, VF2, Fighting Vipers, Megamix, Last Bronx, DOA, Anarchy). It remains obscure, which is a bit puzzling, but that's probably better for collectors as it keeps the prices low. Finally, I have a lot of love for Saturn Virtua Racing. That's probably because I played it when it was new, during a very cold and snowy winter of 95/96. The added cars and tracks are excellent and I wish Sega would bring those courses back. The game has a classic Atari feel and I always enjoy playing. Yes, the visuals are a little thick and chunky, but we've seen far worse. This title deserves an HD remake.

I'm probably one of the few people who actually enjoyed playing "Sonic 3D Blast" back in the day, and I still enjoy playing it every now and then while considering it to be one of the most underrated titles in the franchise. :)

I'd go a step further and say the SF The Movie for Saturn is better than the arcade game, which felt too much like a cheap MK/Street Fighter hybrid, as you mention. Final Fight Revenge isn't nearly the worst fighting game on the Saturn, but it's damn sure the strangest. A US-developed game that only released in Japan, and required a peripheral that also didn't come out in Japan. However, critics tend to thumb their nose at anything "different," as evidenced by critical rejection of the Street Fighter EX series or the action spinoffs of Syndicate and X-Com. Krypt Killer isn't a GREAT lightgun game, and it's clearly a lazy/ugly PSX port, but it's nowhere near the worst light gun game. It's not Virtua Cop, but it's a serviceable light gun game. Like Street Fighter the Movie, and Final Fight Revenge, it's all right. There seems to be a theme here.... Racing games are ALWAYS going to have an issue on console, especially when you only have the option of digital control. The decision to go with polygon cars is stupid, given the Saturn's strengths were as a 2D powerhouse, but I don't see a particularly BAD racing game here. I'd give it a go, if nothing else. It's not Outrun, sure, but it's not Frisco Heat either. Sonic 3D Blast, yeah, I have to agree, it's a fun enough game. It's not a true Sonic game by ANY measure, and yeah, it's a Genesis port, but it's not a quick-and-dirty port. A lot of effort went into improving the renders and making the game look prettier, though you ARE right that it's a 16-bit game on a 32-bit platform, and emblematic of Sega neglecting Sonic in the 32-bit era. I have to disagree about it being "for kids," as it requires a fair bit of patience and curiosity to find all the flickes, especially in the later stages. There's no excuse for In The Hunt to slow down the way it does. Even the stock Saturn was better at 2D than the PlayStation. If you can, it's clear you should get the PlayStation version. That said, it's playable enough if you don't have the ability to play the PSX version. Virtua Racing isn't bad at all. None of the home versions had a lot going for them, at least not on the contemporary systems. I'll play this over the Genesis or 32X any day. Toshinden URA resolved the most urgent issue with Toshinden, Remix, and Toshinden 2 - the speed. URA is a hell of a lot faster than the predecessors, and felt a lot snappier than a lot of 3D fighting games of the time, (obviously bar Tekken and DOA). And it retained the Toshinden 2 soundtrack, which is still my favorite fighting game soundtrack! Can't really speak to Galaxy Force 2, but it certainly looks hella nice on its own. Not being arcade perfect isn't the same as being BAD. And now, we come to the real issue, which is that people don't know how to give any nuance in their reviewing of games. Due in part to the nature of the internet and the mainstreaming of the 7-10 scale in reviewing, people don't know how to differentiate a game that's shit from a game that's all right without being amazing. And that's really the issue with these games, and many others that people casually look down on as "bad." In most cases, they're not. They're not the greatest games, but they're good enough fun to be had. As Caesar said in History of the World part 1, they're nice. Not THRILLING, but nice.

Kind of off the subject. But. I absolutely love the Street Fighter movie in all its corniness. The scene where Raul Julia gives that speech. Wow. Love it so much. The fact that Raul Julia played M Bison because his kids loved the game. That just adds to the lore of that movie. And I thought the game was fun to play. Love the channel.

In The Hunt's slowdown on the Saturn is just horribly lazy programming. Or just unskilled perhaps. A game like that should've shined. You don't buy In The Hunt because of price. At least here.

Sonic 3D, to me, played like the 80's game "Marble Madness"!

Big fan of Sonic 3D Blast. The Saturn version is the main version IMO because the graphical upgrades significantly change the atmosphere of the game. And 3D polygon bonus stages look great. BUT most of all it has IMO one of the best game soundtracks of all time, at least for me personally. Jacques score is just so nostalgic for me. 3D Blast was one of the first titles I got for my Saturn back in 1996 and to this day I will listing to Rusty Ruin and Diamond Dust level music on KZfaq. The gameplay itself is a good bit of fun. And still to this day I can pop it in and run through the game fairly quick.

I think the main problem SF movie had was even though it plays like SSF2T it lacked the actual feel of the game because of the weird hit detection and animations used. I personally didn't mind seeing the actors from the movie playing SF characters but the animations and hit detection just didn't help so the game took more heat than it should have. Fist.........so glad I didn't buy that game even though I heard it was a follow up to Pretty Fighter X. PFX might not be the best fighter too but it's way better than Fist and shouldn't be ignored just because people didn't like the original version on snes.

Loved this list! I agree with you about all of these, and it seems like the commonality between most of them are "looks pretty bad, but plays well." One game I would throw into that same category that I see people online dogging on all the time was "Iron Man - XO Manowar". Yes, the graphics are pretty terrible, but the coop experience is what makes that game fun. When you have two players trying to coordinate their actions to keep from getting killed by the environment and each other, the gameplay honestly reminds me of 2-player Contra, and I had a ton of fun with it with my friends.

That forest in Crypt Killer gave me Castlevania64 vibes, and then I saw that the game was made by Konami :) (keep in mind I was multitasking so I'm not sure if he mentioned it at the start of Crypt Killer segment)

Sonic 3D Blast suffers from feelings of massive disappointment rather than terrible quality. Graphically, it has aged well for the era, the sound track is good, and as you said, the gameplay is simple. Good in short bursts. I'm willing to bet that if this wasn't a Sonic game it would be a cult classic or a hidden gem.

I love Sonic 3D blast.. it's a spruced up version of the Gen/MD game and that's good for me as I loved that.

I love Virtua Racing...... on 32X. But, I played a lot the Saturn game, because it add a ton of new features like modes, cars, tracks, and have a wheel compatibility!!! The new tracks are great, and the kart is very fun to play with the wheel.

Toshinden URA's fine. Was a little bummed at the weak Virtua Racing port. The Saturn shoulda crushed it.

Given how complex programming effectively for the Saturn was, it's amazing most games ran as well as they did.

Honestly even tho the Street Fighter game's graphics didn't age well, it's kinda cool that they kept the traditional SF moves and used digitized graphics. I never played it but it doesn't seem that bad to me at all.

Sonic 3D Blast is perfectly fine, but also perfectly unremarkable. It's exemplary of many Traveller's Tales games; technically impressive but in terms of gameplay and design, very by the numbers and unimaginative. I always thought Sonic 3D would've been received better if it didn't have the "Sonic" brand attached to it and had just been a 16-bit showpiece with its own IP.

In the 32 bit era I went to the Playstation due to several factors. Interesting that on "our side", Toshinden was a landmark. Toshinden 2 is a best fighting games of the classic PSX era. I remember how Virtua Fighter looked from last century when compared to Toshiden. The sega had to race to launch Virtua Fighter 2 and do justice to what fans expected of the Saturn.

Bring the hate but, Sonic 3d blast is probably my favorite Sonic game ever. The music is amazing. The game actually looks stunning on crt as its one of the few games that supports the Saturn high resolution mode. Its in 640x480 instead of standard 320x240. It also has awesome 3d half pipe stages. Really love it.

Never knew people hated Sonic 3D Blast. Sure, no one liked it too much, but hating? Plus, I think one of its biggest flaws is that it doesn't have a save system of any kind. They could've spare one for the Saturn port.

I enjoyed the subject and the vid itself. I also once naysay'd Saturn VR; but I changed my opinion 10 years ago when I replayed it and found it had all those good qualities that you mentioned. It loses the fast arcade Sega feel that the 32x version nailed, but all the extra content and extra polygons and colors make it a fun 1-player Saturn game.

Aww man virtua racing with carts could have beat Mario kart to the punch if they would have included power ups the arcade dryving dynamics were solid.

There's this strategy rpg that came out in Japan called Ronde for the Sega Saturn and it was an attempt to go 3D that graphically looks absolutely horrendous, so much so that it effectively killed the Majin Tensei series that it's a part of. Now, I wasn't around at the time so I can't exactly say that what I think about it right now is what I would've back then but I gave it a chance recently and it really isnt that bad, of course having the animations turned off helps the speed of battles tremendously. I'm hoping anyone who's a fan of Atlus games gives it a chance.

Thanks for giving honest opinions. For me, since I try to keep all the major bases covered, I will get the "best" version, but it's good to know that the lesser versions on one of my favorite consoles aren't as bad as people hype them up to be.

Reappraisal of games I initially don't get on with is a huge contributing factor for why my collection just keeps growing.

Speaking of Sonic 3D Blast, it has exclusive special stages comparable to Sonic 2's. The Mega Drive version has easy special stages, but the Sega Saturn version is far more challenging due to the halfpipe format used. You have to clear a special stage per act to get a Chaos Emerald. Playing a second special stage in the same act gives you an extra life upon clearing it.

Most of these games were shit on for graphics alone but playing them 25 years later, "good" graphics are way less important to the retro enjoyment. Great video!
