In today's video I share with you my thoughts on zero waste items and ask the question, are these zero waste items really worth it? There are some sustainable swaps that I love, some zero waste items I don't love so much and a few I regret buying. I hope you find this video helpful and don't make the same mistakes as I did!

Hey Immy, great to see you today. Thanks for this video... such a treat!! I would love to learn more about compostable meals for camping or anything related to this topic. I have been an outdoors enthusiast for many decades but my eating habits have changed in the past few years, and so have the products on the market. I would love to learn more about plant-based camping food in general 🌿🏕

I purchased a tin set from Ethical Superstore, the brand is A Slice of Green. I have had this for nearly three years and have used both parts for different occasions. I got a Ethical Superstore Gift Voucher as one of my Wedding presents. My husband and I asked for money as the main gift but a handful of people wanted to give us something more physical so I asked for physical items or vouchers. Two physical items included a Aloe Vera plant and a Cacti🌵

I never realized how attached I am to my reusable lunch & snack containers until... in order to spread happiness and promote plant-based eating amongst my colleagues, I share homemade vegan snacks & treats... and if my peeps at work forget to return my containers, there I am running around the building on a repo trip. PS - by far... hands down... the most popular treat that my colleagues love are those amazing Immy Pecan Coffee Vanilla Brownies. People ask for them by request... there is now a sign-up list for whose turn it is next for the brownies... and people promise to return my reusable snack containers. Thanks for sharing that comfort food recipe with us Immy... it is so popular 🥰 Loving this video... only half-way through.

My business cards are plantable!! They do actually sprout 😂 but some heavy rain drowned out the little sprouts and they weren’t able to grow into full fruition... you could try planting the smaller paper discs in a pot inside and that bag outside to compare! Edit: watched more of the video and that’s literally what you did 😂 hope they turn out!

I find using my double walled Clean Kanteen has been lovely but I recently got a narrow mouthed one from a 2nd store for only a dollar that I find easier to drink out of. I still like my kanteen for ice cubes and such but it tends to slosh a lot out of a wide opening. I use my cloth napkins and bring my own utensils to work so I don't use plastic all the time. I have tried to get my workplace to adopt the same practices, even offering to buy them their own kanteens to use rather than the single ice-cold disposable plastic bottles our work offers, with a brita filter pitcher in the fridge to use instead. When I go to town to shop I always bring my own lunch and water bottle to save money rather than go out to eat.

Metal lunchboxes - I find wrapping my sandwich in a liner like a fabric wrap or beeswax wrap helpful and I do like that my yoghurts are secure! The ones with clips are also really handy for storing like cereal bars and open packets of stuff whilst camping (not backpacking so much but average camping!- I also save Christmas biscuit tins for this). The big elephant box makes an excellent loaf tin for baking banana bread. You will need a liner paper but it’s handy as you can store it in it too

I got one tin from my partner for Christmas some years ago and bought one second hand. My layered tiffin I rarely use, because the layers are too small for my lunch 😅 but the other one I use more often. But in the end I use the old Tupperware every day, that I already had when I was in primary school.

I love that you give things a good amount of time before you decide if they are a hit or fail. Things to think about like the heating factor of plain metal tins for lunches is really important, something i'd have completely forgotten about until the day i went to use it. I admit i have got a bit excited about buying reusable things but thankfully i did my research and i have tried not to overdo buying. Its definitely fun to buy new stuff and always gives us that thrill but the biggest challenge in going low waste is actually going "hey do i need this really?". In reality i do one meal a day type fasting during the working week, and for me buying lunch boxes in any form is an absolute waste of time! But I still cant help but browse websites selling them!

@@MsRainingDays Hi there… I tried to post a link here in my comment on 10 ways to combat slugs in your garden, but it wouldn’t take. There are basically two schools of thought when it come to dealing with slugs… one method is to repel the slugs, the other method is to kill them. Your values will influence your decision. I live in northern 🇨🇦 and because our temperatures are colder than the southern parts of the country, we have very few slugs. One year we did get a few slugs in the garden and my partner set up beer traps. This seemed to work OK, but not 100%. There are other systems such as copper strips etc but we have never used them. If you search the internet for suggestions on dealing with slugs in your garden you will find plenty of info there. Thanks for asking, I hope you find a solution, and have a great day.

@@MsRainingDays Sorry for the confusion… I posted the link several times in two different comments and it did not initially show up… but I see now that it has... twice… I hope this is helpful.

I got the ceramic porter bowl and love it. It's heavy but it fits so much and feels so nice to hold. I think it makes all of my warm bowls and salads look so much more appealing. Big fan. Do you have it in the UK?

We have one metal tin and I carry it everyday, it’s my “good kit” that holds utensils, a straw for our kid and a cloth napkin. It works ok for leftovers, but more often we end up using it to split a meal or snack from the farmers market. If we are planning a picnic we use glass containers, but I don’t normally carry them everyday because they’re heavy and breakable.

Love the tempo in your videos, gives time for thoughts. About gardering, I work as a garderner and did listen to a talk about different soil mixtures todayy. One reasearcher and her student had looked into diffrent recepies of a garderners notebook dated 1912. He had diffrent recepies for 70 diffrent species and sometimes diffrent soils mixtures for diffrent stages in the plant development (sowing, potting re potting). The student had then made a study for her bachelor to follow one of his recepies (dont remeber all the ingredients but leaf-compost, and, soil from the ground outside and composted cow dung was some of the components), made one mixture her self with local resources and then compared these two too an store bought baged eco-soil. She grow lettuce and compared thw weight of the harvest and also the maintanace and how much water they needed. In sweden, most store bought baged soil have an base of peat, so not that sustanable (plus the plastic bags and transportation and so on). She acctually got the biggest and tasteiest harvest from the old recepie, it also hold moisture better and the lettuce heads got more compact. The store bought soil had too much nitrogen so the lettuces did become to lose and bitter. The 'historical' mixture did thought got more weeds in it, about 21 species in about 1-2 m2 . I found that very interesting and inspiring to make your own soil. And then really closing the circle when growing your own food if you dont need to buy all the soil. I have a composting toilet because I live in a tiny house partly of grid (have electricity), I alway thought that when I buy a real house I will get back to 'normal' toilets but have started to re-think that. Sorry for the long comment but just felt the urge to share :)

ah never apologise! This comment was SO interesting and insightful, I really appreciate you sharing. Yes! Peat free is the way to go. I'm hoping in the future when I have a small place of my own I will be able to make my own compost and mixtures as you said. I totally agree they will always be better than store bought. Gosh what an interesting find, thanks again for sharing!

Fun video! I'm not sure how accurate it is but I've heard we should be careful of planting seeds paper as some plants might be highly invasive in certain regions.

First of all, your hair looks amazing! For the tins, would you recommend them for multiple day hikes, we have take glass containers for all day hikes but they are heavy and we dont have any plastic Tupperware or stasher bags. We do have some plastic baggies from our non zero waste days for trail mix and such but cant use them for food items as they squish and I dont want to buy another items unless I need to. For the seed paper, my cousin passed away a year ago and I wanted something special so i got cards for her immediate family and a few of my family on seed paper as memorial so they could plant them. I gave them two, one to plant and one I wrote on just in case they wanted to keep that one as they can be sentimental. I had a local lady special make them and they had a bird on them and she loved nature and her art business name was chickadee but it was a nice way to honor her and what she mean and my family loved it. I havent planted mine yet as I'm in a rental so once we are permanent I will and everytime I see it, i will be reminded of her and all her amazing qualities.

One of things I regret is my slice of green clasp boxes for same reason due to a clasp getting loose so going for ones with silicone lids that was watertight. Bento splash box are my faves I think. After say 2 to 3 years. My son needs a bigger box so replacing his slice of green one with a bento splash box
