i dont know if is the same story, but here in Brazil, there is a similar story about the xtray machine the Goiânia accident happend in 1987, and as far as i know, somebody stole a forgotten radiotherapy source from an abandoned hospital , and found this glowing stuff and showed to everyone, and a lot of people went sick, almost 250 people "luckily" the material was caesium, that is much less radioative than uranium or stuff like that, but still is the biggest (or one of the biggest) radioactive accidents here in Brazil

It's interesting how we feel differing degrees of invincibility over the years. The older you get the more aware of your mortality and squishiness you become. Still, even at this age, I feel like as adults, a lot of us aren't aware of just how insignificant we are against the grand scheme of our planets existence, never mind the expanse of space beyond our atmosphere. If I was living in Japan, I know I probably would get the same stuff Aki used to Earthquake proof her house with and I probably would make sure that I picked up some air tight food storage for all my products. Especially since air tight storage helps extend the life and freshness of your food so you don't have to go out and pick stuff up from the store as often. Then I'd get a canning set up going and I would start making my own canned goods just like my Great-Grandparents since we make a lot of food by scratch. I only pray that should I be in a situation where a natural disaster hit that I would have a well stocked pantry and my place has been thoroughly protected.

speaking of disasters. There is a major solar storm that occurs every 11 years which essentially causes a planetwide EMP. And we only just now not felt it because the solar winds has missed everytime so far. The last time being in the 1910s or something where there wasn't actually that much to be affected by this phenomenon? And the most recent one in 2012 missed us by 9 days. So just in case. I say build up some funds for 2025 to replace some electrical equipment that might get fked.

The weird stories they were talking about regarding people dying or being greatly affected by radiation reminded me of a video I saw that discussed this one incident in Romania (I think) where some hikers got stranded in a snow storm out in the mountains. As they were stumbling through the snow they happened upon two large cylinders that were warm to the touch and they spent the night near them to survive. Turns out the cylinders were nuclear waste that had been improperly disposed of and only one hiker wound up surviving after receiving treatment and experiencing extreme radiation sickness.

The part about you lying down and opening your mouth to prevent a shockwave from potentially killing or maiming you is true. It's because of the pressure from the shockwave and it gets released through your orifices in your face. It also prevents your teeth from being shattered by the shockwave. If I'm not mistaken the most radioactive man was begging for them to let him die but they kept him alive to study him because they'd never had anyone be exposed to that much and they wanted to see what happens (I feel like that's what was spoken about on the Mr Ballen video he did about him). I think it's more so the plastic bottle goes off moreso than the water. The expiration date on a bottle of water is typically when the plastic would start to deteriate or whatever and leech into the water and that can make you sick.

(WARNING GRAPHIC CONTENT) Basically, from a biological point of view, the dude was dead the second that he got that lethal dose of radiation. At the time of exposure, his DNA got so mangled that it couldn't perform even the most basic functions for encoding proteins, we use proteins for anything and everything as far as cellular activity, proteins that help clear the cell of waste, proteins that signal cell based metabolic activity, proteins that help that cell mainten communication with its neighbours and the rest of the body...etc. All of which were now completely nonfunctional. That means that anything from environment damage to just mechanical wear on the body, to metabolic toxin accumulation were wreaking havoc on his body while his cells couldn't do their basic functions of maintenance of themselves and their environment; he literally decomposed while alive, all of the while he was probably in excruciating pain.
