In which Joseph and Joseph ask themselves whether or not they're brokenists--that is, do we believe that the things around us are fundamentally broken? Are we status-quoists? Tinkerists? What are you?

It's wonderful to have you guys back. This podcast has contributed to my perspective and, a few months ago, I was lamenting its hiatus. Great discussion. I especially liked the part at around 22:00 regarding participation. It's an interesting angle to examine: what systems require active participation? What are the types of participation? What is the value of any given type of participation? The students must participate to validate the premise of a school insitution, and yet it can be argued that their method of participation is involuntary and thus their participation does not justify the system. So, then, it is their forced participation by others into this institution that validates it. This is not much different than prison or an asylum, and invites a person to be critical.

I feel like as I've gotten older I've become more and more a status-quoist, and I'm not sure that even comes from a place of experience per-se. In my case, I think about issues and when I look really carefully I learn about ways that the issues can be fixed, and of course the known ways of getting things fixed are by doing so through the systems in place. It is much more difficult to be a brokenist and be successful in your pursuit because even trying to make a system or framework is a colossal amount of work, and I think that's why revolutions often lead to unstable governments, because they are having to start afresh, where a status-quoist already has the full system in place, and is just shifting a brick, replacing a plank of wood, etc as a sort of ship of theseus. I agree that the level of individuals interacting which each other and creating a culture of improvement is absolutely vital, and maintaining that also means working to avoid disenfranchisement, which would be ripe ground for brokenism. Ultimately, I do think people generally will do the "right" thing even if it isn't consiously factored in as such, they'll just see it as an expected duty. This also binds closely with something else that has been on my mind a lot lately. People treat patriotism as a goalpost based on their own values or of those they oppose. Yet I think fundamentally, it's just a belief that people who you share some sort of identity with can and will do better.
