The similarities between WW I and the situation now are eerily striking. We had big powers haggling over zones of interest and vital security interests, official and unofficial alliances, a lot of political gunpowder lying around and then a spark igniting the whole thing. Few diplomats and leaders actually wanted the outbreak of a big war, but they miscalculated and when they realized that the alliance mechanisms and security demands in place would escalate a local conflict to a big European war, it was too late to stop it. It is the same as now. There are of course differences, but strong similarities remain. Serbia posed a security threat to Austria via subversive and direct action, much like NATO member Ukraine would to Russia. There is a overzealous superpower wanting to protect its client (Russia back then, now US/NATO), and going too far in attempting that (Russia´s mobilization back then, now US/UK vowing to help Ukraine win no matter what, taking back Crimea and crippling Russia in the process).

Problem with this is A. It paints Russia as a victim B. Its implying that Russia is still a relevant member in the very real three way cold war RightNow they are only relevant due to the fact they have a nuclear arsenal, the real fight will be between the US and China if war breaks out this will not be WW1, you can draw all the comparisons you want but you didn't account for the glaring fact that it's 3 nuclear powers this isn't 1914 it's 2023

Russia may fck off, giving way to russia would be the same mistake that was made during the early WWII when germany was given way. If putin get´s away with attacking ukraine he won´t stop there, the same way hitler didn´t stop after poland.

Yes and Shinzo Abe assassination is similar to how WW1 was triggered by the assassination of a famous person.

What i'm trying to get at is that the "slate has been wiped clean" of what can be defined as a cold war since the collapse of the Soviet union in 1991. But I can't deny the similarities between today and early-late 19th centuary Edit: For some reason I wasn't able to fit this into the original comment because....youtube.

The question only has meaning if we accept that the cold war ever ended

It absolutely did. Even before the breakup of the Soviet Union, tensions rapidly lessened and after the breakup, the US rather feared that Russia would disintegrate and release lots of WMDs and military know how to states and private entities hostile to the US.

It never ended. Communism didn't end, it just retreated underground. Putin took an oath to the KGB.

It ended, the USSR and Warsaw is non-existent. The US/West is now the global influential superpower… until due time

You're kidding right?? Ever heard of the Cuba crises that occured as a respons after Nato decided to place a atom bomb in Turkey? Budapest Agreement?? Broken by Nato Desipte CIA's current Director already in 1995 Minsk Agreement`? Who were never respected despite several warnings . The nazis that Vicotria Nuland put on place after US coup d'etat continued instead to commit genocide against east ukrainian Anti Nazis and civilians with Russian heritage for 8 long years while having Nato next to the Russian border training more newly bred nazi jihadists! Imagine having the Russian or China doing all that on Mexican ground or in Puerto Rico (Like US are trying now with Taiwan) We know from the Cuba Crises that it wouldn't even take a week before we would all have turned in to dust because of US eager to start WW3

Look at the official war goals of the US, the UK and Ukraine, and then at those of Russia. The goals of both sides are fundamentally contradictory, with Russia catastrophic consequences for Russia in case of defeat, hence Russia can´t afford to lose. Escalation is already inevitable, the only question is what the spark will be that will lead to direct conflict.

Japan’s Leader Compares Strain With China to Germany and Britain in 1914 Give this article By Jane Perlez Jan. 23, 2014 BEIJING - Relations between Asia’s two biggest powers, Japan and China, have been strained for months, with near-constant sniping over a territorial dispute and the two countries’ fraught history. Now, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan has escalated the war of words, telling an audience on Wednesday at the Davos conference in Switzerland that the increasing tensions between China and Japan were similar to the competition between Germany and Britain before World War I, a blunt assessment that concurs with recent remarks by prominent historians.

This is much bigger than a simple cold war. If EU detains a Russian oil tanker in international waters, then what is to stop Russia from sinking a giant LNG ship going to EU with one tiny little anti-ship missile, if the ship does not heed warnings to heave to, or for that matter, if the US sinks that LNG ship with one torpedo and blames Russia. The Lusitania or Gulf of Tonkin, your pick. There are plenty of NEOCONS in the US government.

That is not really the point. The point is that the US have commited themselves to defeat Russia by helping Ukaine win the war, which entails destroying Russia´s military capabilities, its status as a big power and ripping off annexed Crimea from Russia´s territory, which is of immense strategic value. The US have enacted a lendlease progam for the first time since WW II and have levied a lot of sanctions against Russia, which they didn´t during the Cold War. Overall the US + allies and Russia are already embroiled in a war about areas vital to Russia, but refrain from direct military action so far. Both sides can´t now back out of this war anymore, but Russia has much more to lose, ensuring boundless escalation.
