The black-masked critters that teach themselves how to break into trash bins are the perfect urban survivalists, and we have ourselves to thank for that. Correspondent Faith Salie talks with experts who have studied raccoons to find out what we can learn from them.

I've been rescuing and rehabbing and raising raccoons for a while now. I've raised close to 500 of them. Raccoons are one of the most intelligent creatures on this planet, they have a incredible memory that some studies say is second to none on the earth. The raccoon proof garbage can in this video is extremely hilarious to me there was actually a study that was based on the a raccoons memory. 100 raccoons given 10 different locking mechanisms ranging from extremely basic to incredibly intricate. By incredibly intricate I mean multiple tasks to open push pull turn left lift right slide up twist pull and open etc etc etc a task that most humans may not even be able to accomplish. 92 of the raccoons successfully opened all the locks. They were taken away for different periods of time and reintroduced to the locking mechanisms a month later 6 months later 2 years later and out of those 92 raccoons 88 of them immediately opened each and every one of those locks without hesitation. This is one of the studies that claimed the raccoon has a memory second to any other creature on the face of this Earth.

At one house I lived in we had a momma raccoon who had her summer home in our front yard. She didn't mind having her babies climb up the children and sit on their shoulders. She also loved bananas and would come up to me and gently take a half banana out of my hand. She was afraid but wanted that bananas really really badly.

I like wildlife. I like to see deer, foxes, raccoons, etc. But my neighbor doesn’t. Our local wildlife rehab place says if I feed raccoons, squirrels, they learn to overcome their avoidance of humans. Some people don’t find begging behaviors cute and demand those animals that frighten them to be euthanized. I don’t want wild animals to be euthanized so I don’t feed them (other than hummingbirds and finches).

Before I got a dog I used to put food out for the raccoons and I enjoyed watching them. They never caused me any problems. Mothers would bring their kits by and lay down as if saying, "Go play, momma's gonna take a nap." They were playful and fun to watch. I had a bucket under a sawhorse and the young raccoons would walk upside-down along the sawhorse to play with the bucket. I remember one raccoon laying on its back playing with a thick extension cord like it was some rope (and quickly removed the cord).

Prof. from Ohio can come here. There is a racoon in our neighborhood. Now we have heavy stones on the rubbish tins to stop him from opening them and strewing food all over the place. To eat a bun they toss everything else out of the tins. One night ours was eating on the roof next to my open window. Seeing him in the half-dark, I screamed!!! He didn't leave off with the bun, despite my yelling. Then he jumped over the fence into the empty lot next door . I crawled out on to the roof, took the bun and put in the waste bin. The animal returned!! Was he ever angry. I could see his sharp little teeth in the dusk. He WANTED that thing. I did take photos of the bitten bun but could only sketch him on paper.

It's saddens me the stereotype that the raccoon has been labeled with being a nuisance. Fact of the matter is man is the nuisance the raccoon is no different than you or I they want two things food and shelter and once they find those they are going to continue to frequent that location. So if you have a so-called problem with raccoons getting into your garbage can or up in your attic the problem is you man needs to take the responsibility to secure his which cans make sure his home is free of any access that the raccoon can get into if the raccoon doesn't find shelter or cannot access food anywhere on your property they will move on plain and simple

Horrible stereotype.. although raccoons are a RVS "rabies vector species" doesn't mean that they have rabies. Rabies is actually pretty rare and confirmed cases vary throughout the country. I've been a licensed raccoon rehabber for lots of years I've raised close to 500 of them and I personally haven't seen any cases of rabies in fact the last documented case of rabies in a raccoon or any animal in my state was 1960.
