Great rock band from the 70's-80's. They had so many great songs such as "Lorelei", "Suite Madame Blue", "Lady", "Renegade", "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)", "Babe", "The Best Of Times", "Mr. Roboto", "Too Much Time On My Hands", "Show Me The Way", "Don't Let It End", "Why Me", "Borrowed Time", "Rockin' The Paradise" etc.

I first heard Styx when I was 14 years old in 1974. It was their first hit - "Lady" played on the radio (WLS Chicago). I saved my allowance and bought the album Styx II which happened to be my second full album (My first was Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon"). I was transitioning from 45's to albums at that point. There are some absolute gems on this LP. "You Need Love" is a great Classic Rock tune as well as "You Better Ask" and "A Day" is Classic Rock mellow song with an upbeat mid section then slows back down, beautiful tune. And pretty much everything else they've released has been great. I'm a huge fan and have been since I first heard their music, I still listen to it even now to this day. I am now 63 and as many my age have said, it makes me happy that today's generation is enjoying this music as much as we did when it first came out. Thank You for the reaction.

Seen Styx live twice, unfortunately without Dennis Deyoung, but the new singer is good and the band is still awesome. If you haven't heard it yet, listen to their song Crystal Ball, it's a Styx song but it's performed by guitarist Tommy Shaw, and his voice is incredible. Very popular song.

One of the best rock songs ever written about alien abduction. Phil also nailed what was a trend in the 70's of a three-tier song. Following in the footsteps of Stairway to Heaven. Beginning with vocals, then adding in a few instruments and the final third with everyone all in including a brass section. And when most songs were wrapping up around three minutes, this one was just getting started. Styx had a lot of early songs that allowed for a closeness on the dance floor. This one starts that way, but by the time it ends, the dance floor resembled more of a Nirvania mosh. (not quite) Singer/keyboards Dennis DeYoung wrote this song, supposedly from his youthful days of watching sailboats from the shore in Chicago. Dreaming of being in a better place. Nice choice on video, as the official video drops the close to two minute futuristic instrumental.

Dennis DeYoung, he talked about the meaning behind this song. "'Come Sail Away' is a song about yearning to be in a better place," he said. "How do you get there? You go on a boat, on a ship, angels waving their wings as you ascend to heaven with them. Is there something going on? A starship to the stars? Are they aliens? Is it Captain Kirk?

Styx actually has three lead singers. Dennis DeYoung sings this song, and his style is more keyboard driven and melodic. Tommy Shaw sings the more pure rock and roll sounding songs. And James Young (JY) sings the heavy stuff. Styx has a very diverse catalog due to their three leads.

You’ll need to hear quite a few tracks from Styx before you can really “get” their sound. They are unquestionably the most musically diverse band you’ll ever hear, largely because they have 3 songwriters and 3 lead singers with distinctly different musical backgrounds. Because of that, Styx has something for everybody. Prog, hard rock, pop, ballads, folk and techno. I highly recommend Renegade, A.D. 1928/Rockin’ the Paradise, Blue Collar Man, Castle Walls, Too Much Time On My Hands, Crystal Ball, Miss America…I could go on and on! Truly one of the world’s greatest rock bands. Great vocals, soaring harmonies, brilliant instrumentalists. Enjoy!

Now these guys were an AMAZING band (they still tour, I saw them last year for the 4th time in my life). There were kind of two factions in this band - you just heard Dennis DeYoung sing on this and he was the sort of musical theater minded singer/songwriter vs the more hard rock styles of guitarists/vocalists Tommy Shaw and James Young. The tensions were intense and they ultimately broke up (Dennis left and Tommy/James replaced him and swear they would never work with him again). But although they couldn’t get along that tension dynamic and the unbelievable musicianship of all 3 made for some INCREDIBLE classic songs. To hear Tommy on lead vocals you have got to check out Renegade which is an all time classic rock timeless masterpiece. You’re going to get a lot of song recommendations for this band and they will all be good. Yes, even Mr. Roboto is good despite what some may say. Is it 80’s cheesy? Yes, I was there when it came out. And although I don’t think Tommy and James liked it I know I did. And still do! Check out more from these guys - you will NOT be disappointed.

Phil, one of the best things about progressive rock is that most progressive rock songs have multiple meanings simultaneously. With this song you have both the actual epic storyline and exactly what you and Sam got out of the song. You definitely hit the nail right on the head when it came to the actual meaning of the song. One of my favorites when it comes to the dual-messages is Witch Hunt by Rush.

The album Grand Illusion of which this song is from was considered their masterpiece when they were at the height of their musical powers IMHO. This is my favorite Styx song of all time! Take it as it is….don’t try to make more of it! The first two albums I ever bought were Styx:Pieces Of Eight and The Grand Illusion, where this comes from. Styx is my wife’s favorite band of all time! There is so much more Styx to get into ….. oh also check out Lady, The Grand Illusion (title track), Angry Young Man, Crystal Ball, Too Much Time On My Hands, Sweet Madam Blue….too many to list!

From their Grand Illusion album, “Man In the Wilderness”, “Miss America”, “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)”, other songs, “Suite Madam Blue”, and “Crystal Ball”. If you play their first big hit, “Lady”, there is an awesome live version where singer/pianist, Dennis De Young, has an extended piano intro. It is amazing!

This band was smokin' hot when I was a kid. I remember saving up money from distributing newspapers when I was 12 to save up for a "boom box". After some months, I was able to get one for me and my friends to listen to while playing ball. First two "cassettes" I got was Rush's "Permanent Waves" & Styx's "Grand Illusion" Great stuff.

I saw Styx 7 or 8 times back in '72-'73, when I was 16. They were promoting their first 2 albums on the local Chicago "Wooden Nickel" label. They sold signed copies of the LP's for $5.00 to the crowd when they played at the local, "smoky" non-alcohol teen night club in the Chicago suburbs where my GF (future wife) was the coat check girl (lots of fringed "rawhide" suede jackets to watch). They would do a set from their first album, then a full set of Led Zeppelin covers (they didn't have enough of their own material for 3 sets at the time). Finally, they finished with songs from "Styx II". The crowd always went wild when they played "Lady" as the finale. They'd sit at the old, wood telephone cable spool tables with candle-wax covered Chianti bottles in the center (a staple of club décor at the time) with us "hippy kids" during the breaks between sets. They were just cool locals who eventually made it big. They even played a concert at my high school!

I think most of us that grew up with the music of the 70s was more open to different styles as most of what came out was new and experimental compared to today. So I'm not surprised that Sam's mother listened to STYX and other hard rock, progressive rock at during that era.
