Thanks for the informative vid. Subd'. I have been taking a PPI's for approx 25 years. As I recall I started with Prilosec but not long after was put on Prevacid and have ridden that train for a very long time. I got wind of possible bone fracture issues and have been on alert since. I am 58 years old. Now I have what feels like every major joint in my body has arthritis, hips...shoulders....hands.....feet.....back.......etc. For the last few years I have been asking my gastro and my regular Dr if I should stop taking this PPI but the over all consensus is that it solves my acid issues. I do get heartburn if I stop taking it....and I feel the damage is done to my bones....joints....and stomach health. I had my gallbladder removed 25 years a go as well so things are stacked against me. I have lived fairly well with a pretty decent digestive system I believe especially with the awful diet I have had for most of my life. Recently I have experienced some really odd bloating and also odd cramping like pain in my kidney areas. Sometimes my stomach will get locked up and I will feel like I cant eat a bite even though I havent eaten much and know I should be hungry. This got me watching videos like yours and I believe that I could certainly have SIBO or low stomach acid. So on my own I started taking my PPI every other day to get my stomach producing some more acid....which it sure did. I also have switched to decaf coffee and lowered my diet soda's to just one a day. One of my suspicions was that too much caffeine with the coffee along with more caffeine and horrible chemicals in the soda may have finally caught up with me. I have yet to figure out if its the coffee or the soda that is tensing up my stomach or if I had a stomach bug. I just wish there was an easier way to test for these issues. Also it seems that I would really need a specialist like yourself to put me through all of the tests to figure out exactly what is going on...SIBO....low acid....leaky gut.....etc? No doubt I fall in one of those categories. One of the only ways that I get relief is moving around and working on a project......if the project is physical and has me sweating that's even better. It seems to help with digestion and lets my stomach relax. Anyway sorry for the long ramble....I am just grasping for straws and making stuff up on my own but I would love to have a specialist like yourself help me do a more scientific look at my situation. Thank you

Wow, my dad died of stomach cancer in 2014, and he had been on PPI twice daily for a decade! I asked him to double-check with his doctor if this was absolutely necessary. But he said "anything my doctor prescribes...I don't question, I trust him implicitly". He also had pernicious anemia and osteoporosis for the last few years. I take a PPI, but only when I feel an ulcer coming on...and only for a few days. My doctor asked why I don't take it every day ... I have osteopenia...and I don't want it to get worse! Thank you for this important information!!

Great video Dr Norm. Definitely different to other videos I've seen on KZfaq regarding this topic. I suffer from the symptoms of GERD. I generally have reflux all day and up my throat to back of mouth. I still have yet to see a gastroenterologist. My GP has prescribed me pantoprazole 40mg which i have been on for a couple of weeks. It's helped to ease the discomfort in my throat though i still get reflux. I definitely do not want to be on PPI long term. I understand the importance of a healthy gut and it eats at me that i have to take PPI to help one area of my body but yet cause damage to other. I've had a breath test done and came back negative for H Pylori. I heard you mention functional medical practitioner. I've been also thinking about seeing one as been highly recommended by someone i know. I've seen a lot of fixes if someone has low stomach acid, but what if stomach acids level aren't low? How can it be treated without staying on PPI long term?

Thanks Doc ❤ My blood work always shows low sodium and low chloride even though I eat a lot of sea salt and I drink electrolite drinks (coconut water, but I've stopped now bc of the carbs). I just started taking HCl with digestive enzymes, but it didn't alleviate all the symptoms. Apparently, I have SIBO now, too. I watched your SIBO video. It was very informative. I'm going no carb with intermittent fasting. I just don't understand why my sodium and chloride are always low, but I did sweat a lot with the digestive problems, so maybe that's why. I also have exercise induced asthma, and my elastase stool test was 149. I don't take any medications except the enzymes and some supplements that I'm reducing now. I use an asthma inhaler and estradiol cream. I do have high cholesterol, but I don't treat it bc the HDL is high. The whole thing is 250. I did have an endoscopy several years ago that showed an irritated stomach and bile in the stomach. I figured that must be from low stomach acid bc enough acid would have neutralized the bile. Thank you for all this great information.

Few things you can try to help with this: - Blood type diet (search for a video called ‘An introduction to the blood type diet’ by Louisa) - Steaming your food for 15-20 minutes to make your food less dense, reduce cooked food toxins, and retain more nutrients and enzymes - Eat more raw food, raw food retains all nutrients and enzymes otherwise destroyed by cooking with none of the toxins and denatured proteins in cooked food which might help with digestion

Hi, If an endoscopy shows minor scarring of the esophagus indicitive of reflux /gerd, is the scar always a result from high stomach acid, or could low acid still be the cause of esophageal scarring?
@DrNormGutHealth

Reflux contains acid (less if you have hypochlohydria), and also bile, pepsin, other digestive enzymes. and microbial end products. I would imagine any of these other factors, particularly bile would be inflammatory/damaging to esophageal tissue.

What about drinking habits, like drinking before or after a meal?
@DrNormGutHealth
@DrNormGutHealth 2 жыл бұрын
If you're talking about alcohol, I took a look and was suprised by how little data is available on this. My takeaway is moderate drinking likely has little impact in terms of hypochlorhydria / achlorhydria risk. Beer / wine stimulate acid (not surprising since they have some nutrients), distilled beverages do not. Here's a paper on this (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/labs/pmc/articles/PMC1374273/). When it comes to binge drinking / alcoholism, all bets are off - rough on liver / intestinal mucosal surface, etc., and may impact stomach acid production. This review cites a book by Bode and Bode 1992 suggesting alcoholics may be impacted for gastric acid secretion (pubs.niaaa.nih.gov/publications/arh21-1/76.pdf). Perhaps I should have included this in the video, but was looking for more data to support.

@oldxebeche 2 жыл бұрын
@@DrNormGutHealth Thanks a lot. Your video is great, I just thought, naively so, that there should be plenty of literature about how beverages (water, sugary, carbonated, caffeinated, alcoholic) influence gastric acid. Maybe it's just not a big issue for healthy guts because as you pointed out acid levels are restored much faster than food is digested in the stomach?
@DrNormGutHealth
@DrNormGutHealth 2 жыл бұрын
@@oldxebeche I see your question goes beyond alcohol. I didn't include these beverages since they are not linked to low stomach, but things we eat or drink do impact acidity. Water reduces acidity (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18473176/), as do fats (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/956391/), but other drinks / foods in general increase acidity with proteins being the most potent stimulant of acidity.

@alexforce9

Coz you need acid to kill pathogens. And you are confusing things. A healthy stomach can handle the acid it produce. It doesn't get inflamed by it. Coz its lining its fine.

@@alexforce9 what you are saying doesn't make sense because doctors prescribe PPIs for gastritis to shut down production of stomach acid. Again what would be causing the inflammation if it's not acid ?
@alexforce9
@alexforce9 Жыл бұрын
@@no_country_for_real_men The PPIs work on gastritis coz your lining is already inflamed and gone. So the acid irritates it. Gastritis is kinda of a mystery - some get it from bad eating habits, others from drinking, h pylory, autoimmune, ect. Low stomach acid my get you gasttis coz you cant digest food properly , it rots in your stomach, bring pathogens in it, gas, bloating. Irritation all around. Also - you need good digestion to get nutrients that you need to build your stomach and its lining. You need proteins and minerals for that. (Zinc, and glycine comes to mind) And you need strong stomach acid to digest proteins. Thats why they give you digestive enzymes with your PPIs. To help you maintain digestion. Stomach needs about a week to heal if its not too much damage. So PPIs help to stop the irritation, so it can restore itself. But they dont cure gastritis. You still have it.
