An analogous situation is employers pay employees different amounts to do the same job, and then employers also try to encourage norms around not sharing compensation information in hopes of keeping wages down for at least some employees. At this point in time, talking to your colleagues about compensation is far more important than worrying about price discrimination.

I don't get how people are so uncomfortable talking about how much they make? I have no problem with it, and I'm one of the lowest paid civil engineers in the country with my years of experience and professional license. But I also tell them I get perks like free health insurance paid by the employer, 3 day weekends every other week, paid holidays, 150 hours of vacation time each year that rolls over into sick leave the next year if I don't use it all, but my time off never gets denied. plus I get to work from home and set my own hours. I can't find benefits like those anywhere else that I talk to.... at least not in the area that I live, and I have no intention of moving because my house is paid off and I don't want to get another mortgage or rent.

Because a lot goes into compensation and people are incredibly simple minded when it comes to comparisons. It is highly personalized. What people do is compare titles and pay, but NOT their resumes. Maybe for simple work, this works, but two engineers with the same title can be paid wildly differently based on many, many, many personal factors like years of experience and accomplishments as well as labor market conditions vs the company's need at the time as well as salary negotiated. Not to mention the impression you gave during the interview. Nevermind the years worked at the company itself. However, you can get a better idea of your worth based on this more nuanced comparison. Like Josh might have more years over me, but I think I went to a better school. But this all comes down to what your employer values in each of you. And ultimately if you think you can get better pay you go and put yourself up for sale.
@ocaraevil

it is like the other comments, if you are working on a entry lvl job or factory work. maybe . every other job depends on the negotiation and wants/needs of each part. ex:i am willing to work on a 4 hour shift in a fast food for 10 an hour. i went to the interview and convince the interviewer that my work worth 10(the company is in need, experience, appearance, grit , likeability or none of that and just better negotiation skills). so i got 10 and the company usually pays 8. why everyone should be paid 10? 'if the others employees think they should get payed more. is just a case to go to the employer and show why you are worth more and ask for a raise' there is no way to show appreciation to a good working employee vs people who just want the paycheck if everyone earn the same.

The increase in costs in a small grocery store vs a larger store is also due to their wholesale costs. Smaller stores often pay higher wholesale cost per unit because their orders are smaller. Many times wholesalers offer lower prices per unit if the store buys a certain number of units that smaller stores can’t afford.

Or any kind of sale or products ending up in discount stores. Usually by Black Friday all the clothes and shoes on sale are on their way out of season. You usually don't have the best looking pieces during this time because wealthier people already bought them all out at full price. Wealthier people don't have the patience to wait for a sale. I am pretty well off and really don't wait for sales or look at prices much anymore TBH. Though with inflation and all I'm starting to look for more sale items on food at least.

Here in Europe smaller stores frequently won't have price lists or price labels. I avoid those because it not only means prices might be different but mostly because of the pressure to "buy something" to be polite for wasting the sales person time or to be "rude" if everything is expensive or not worth the price. That frequently applies to bakeries, butchers etc. Then, small business owners get angry nobody shops at their stores anymore, but they're the ones keeping us away by making it hard to compare their prices with the largest stores in the first place.

Well, I don't, but I feel bad. I also hate places where you have to ask for the price like butcher shops and bakeries, for example. You start asking for prices and you clearly see they're unamused when they know their prices are higher than the supermarket across the street and that you won't buy anything from them. They do it because many people believe their items are better just because it's a small business (or street tent), which I find quite silly. I treat those things as commodities, unless I can clearly see a large difference. Still, I only pay extra if I believe the added value is higher than the price difference. @@chrism3784

This only applies to family owned businesses; I have no issues shopping at big name brands like Aldi or Paul (bakery). The only time I never get upcharged is when I shop with my ex who's Italian. The reverse happens to her in Asia. She gets upcharged for almost everything because she's white. Apparently, in Europe, Asians immediately get the "tourist price". All of these are actions ANY customer can take, and it becomes more of a reward for doing an action. You are rewarded for your loyalty, or your action of hunting for coupons. It doesn't matter what you earn, or what your mood is etc. If a website tells me "This item is $50, but clip a coupon on the app and you get $3 off", then I decide if my time in downloading the app is worth the $3. I am totally fine with this. Instead, if the software will detect if I am on an app, and give me cost $47, and if I am on the website it will charge me $50, I do not think that is correct.

That example doesnt sound like market discrimination. I might not be a professional about that but it makes sense to offer items in certain areas that are likely to sell and this is just attempting to meet demand in that area. chances are if a product isn't available in an area than market research may have indicated that the region is uninterested in the item so instead it goes somewhere where there is a market for it. Now if lower quality products are given to that market while a similar market receives a higher quality item, but overall the items are the same, then that sounds like market discrimination to me as the lower quality items likely will go to lower quality neighborhoods where people might be more likely to purchase what they can get just to survive while more well off neighborhoods are wealthy enough to be more choosy. Thats just my opinion though.

This is a good update on the old knowledge of cookies being used to track your activity. 10 years ago I gamed this system to get better pricing airline flights. I would use my computer and then delete the cookies. Sometimes the prices would fluctuate depending on which competitor website I had visited previously. I also would go into work and use various different desktops. I would get a wide array of prices on flights that were on the same websites with the same airlines and same times. All completely identical but for different prices. So I encourage everyone to do a lot of price comparisons. Try deleting cookies, using different browsers, different laptops and mobile devices and use them in different locations like work, library, home, friends house. Even use VPNs. I'm sick to death of discriminatory pricing for online groceries. If you're imobile, disabled, don't have anyone to help you and need to eat, supermarkets very quickly push up the cost of everything you usually buy, by 20, 30, 100% in some cases. If you choose a brand that's always been cheaper, watch them push that price up to match the price of what you've previously bought to keep you poor. In a country where you have multiple options, this isn't so bad. Just choose a competitor. But in smaller countries where companies hold market monopolies, some of the most vulnerable people will end up paying more than they should. I want this to be illegal. It's predatory and it's obfuscated in ways that consumers should not have to deal with.

Likewise, a ton of places have "ladies nights" where women drink for free/less...which arguably discriminates against men and nonbinary people. ALSO: I was waiting for them to mention the "Pink Tax" ~ manufacturing products which are identical except packaged to be marketed to women AND price is raised several dollars higher. (often the package colors are pink or purple but not always) This is also the case with dry cleaning fees and haircuts whether or not clothes are identical or hairstyle length is the same! There truly ought to be a government rebate for being female cause you know companies will always do these kinds of things

I don’t feel like that’s quite the same kind of discriminating pricing… a woman is free to buy the non pink razor or the plain black screwdriver. They often just don’t. I do agree there is a general markup on all women’s clothes however… but then again women don’t usually buy $300 basketball shoes, bespoke straight razors, sub zero camping gear,or RGB computer components either ( all of which have intangible benefits that target men ) So some of that is simply demand economics

Visting a much less wealthy country, it was interesting to see a number of historical sites having a 'tourist price' significantly higher than the price for nationals of that country. Honestly, I don't feel that much objection to them doing that, since if you are visiting from overseas, you are wealthy enough to afford international flights and accommodation in the country (and the different pricing was prominent and clear on their websites, so I was hardly being blindsided.)

Gentrification is a good reason to argue for it. If you are coming from a country with a significantly higher currency value, and you are visiting a very touristy place, the tourists can jackup prices and make it too expensive for local demography, unless higher prices are charged for them. A lot of popular tourist destinations like Bali suffer because of gentrification

Such an amazing video. I have noticed that prices in apps like Uber and Uber Eats that had my AMEX Gold card saved on it were consistently more expensive than my wife who had a lower tier VISA card loaded on hers. Dynamic pricing to screw people they think will pay more for something. The conspiracy theorist in me can't help but think AMEX knows about this and is getting something out of it, what with their monthly "credit" benefit. Very suspicious I think.

online stores in our country somehow do something related to this by not showing the cheapest available versions of the product until the next day of adding it to cart or after you received it the product. one can beat this by opening plenty listings of the product then keep checking the bottom of the page then open a cheaper listing. Keep doing this until you find bottom of similar prices. basically, you don't choose the first/top listings that come up on your initial search/click or tap.

We desperately need to pass laws to prevent this! Once corporations decide it's okay to discriminate and turn on the tech to do it, they'll lobby to keep it and raise prices over time to the max they can bleed us for. They won't look at what we're paying for rent, food, etc., and why should a corporation get to decide where our money goes anyway? Turning this back off will be near impossible once it's in place.

Some stores (lokking at you hardware and electronic stores) price discriminate between online (national competition) and offline (local competition). However, many of those same stores offer "store pickup". So you can order it whilst you are standing in front of the item and watch an employee picking it off the pile and carrying it to the piickup counter. Hotels love to do the same: walk in customers get milked whilst online the same room is 30-60% less. So I book online whilst standing at the reception and then say "Oh, I have a reservation". This is very counterintuitive because they have to pay the booking platform a hefty fee, but even if you point that out they won't budge and rather pay the booking platform too (instead of pocketing more money)

I feel only one of the examples you gave near the beginning is truly price discrimination. That being the car salesman part. when you mention the hotel and airline tickets increasing during a holiday I don't see that as price discrimination because during those times people typically are more likely to travel and need places to stay during their stay which uses up the limited supply of airplane seats and/or hotel rooms for that duration of the holiday. Because of this it looks more like a supply and demand issue rather than a discrimination issue.

I used to work at a small business doing t-shirts and when we have jackasses and we would make them pay a higher price if they were rude or complicated with the order. Customers can think it's unfair, but we don't need an attitude or waste our time. If they complain about the price the owner would discount it if they were not rude or anything like that. Otherwise, if rude, all sales are final. We don't need a Karen or a Kevin or mental gymnastics. I mean, 20-ish dollars for a shirt, especially if it's customized when the customers would STILL complain about the price! Yeah, you can get something like that online, but you're getting it in a store where using the heat press is hot, the ink and printer costs a lot, we gotta pay rent or lease for the store, and we gotta design it as well as make a profit and pay me. I really hated working onsite at the job because of the rotten attitudes of the people and I have an anxiety disorder. So I had enough on-site work after 2 years. So, I was a little offended by this video or feel a little guilty. The owner just didn't want to deal with attitudes and again, a small business. So bottom line, don't be a douche bag in a store like that. Otherwise, you'll get a higher price.
