I remember seeing that miniseries when it was a 1981 rerun on PBS. I happened to be in 7th-grade Old World History back then and we were coincidentally studying Claudius and other Roman Emperors at the time. The show was marvelous and really pounded home the fact that he became Emperor because his neurological ticks and physical disabilities made Senators and Patricians believe he would be an easy person to control, but instead, they all found out the hard way that in reality Claudius was a shrewd, clever and ruthless leader by having them all killed before they could act.

The reason why Commodus has such protagonism here is actually pretty accurate. He popularized gladiators to get people’s favor, and got killed by one.

Bisscute mocking Commodus was hilarious 👍 Good movie, fantastic performances by everyone especially Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix. It definitely shows a very brutal time in history. I think my first couple times watching I felt the same way, and I wished Maximus had lived. However, upon further viewings its the absolute best way the movie could have ended. Maximus completed everything he needed to do on Earth, and was finally free to go home and reunite with his family after all those years.

Most of gladiators were slaves or ex-slaves, but some were free men who fought as a job, with a proper contract, led by a proper manager. They were considered in the same way as prostitutes and actors and basically as any kind of outcasts. They were often referred to as “infamous” (people with bad reputation).

"Gladiator" has at least three things in common with the epic "Ben Hur" (1959). 1. Both films are set in ancient Roman times 2. Both films are about a wronged non-Roman seeking revenge on a Roman 3. Both films had supporting actors who got screwed by the Academy Awards. Stephen Boyd (Messala) and Joaquin Phoenix (Commodus) were magnificent in their roles.

Apollodorus of Damascus, under Emperor Trajan (about year 100 a.D.), build a bridge across the Danube, to unify the new conquered province of Dacia. Imagine how hard it was 2000 years ago to build a 1Km+ long/15m+ wide bridge across the longest European river... And, if they did this on the farthest province, just imagine what they did in Rome, in Costantinopole, in Alexandria... If you have a 5€ bill in your wallet, that aqueduct you can find outside of Nimes in France, it was build by Romans and still stands 2000 years later. I'm overwhelmed by the greatness of that civilization.

Slave who became emperor Publius Helvius Pertinax (/ˈpɜːrtɪnæks/; 1 August 126 - 28 March 193) was Roman emperor for the first three months of 193. "Bread and circuses" (or bread and games; from Latin: panem et circenses) is a metonymic phrase referring to superficial appeasement. It is attributed to Juvenal (Satires, Satire X), a Roman poet active in the late first and early second century CE, and is used commonly in cultural, particularly political, contexts. In a political context, the phrase means to generate public approval, not by excellence in public service or public policy, but by diversion, distraction, or by satisfying the most immediate or base requirements of a populace, by offering a palliative: for example food (bread) or entertainment (circuses). Juvenal originally used it to decry the "selfishness" of common people and their neglect of wider concerns. The phrase implies a population's erosion or ignorance of civic duty as a priority. This phrase originates from Rome in Satire X of the Roman satirical poet Juvenal (c. 100 CE). In context, the Latin panem et circenses (bread and circuses) identifies the only remaining interest of a Roman populace that no longer cares for its historical birthright of political involvement. Here Juvenal displays his contempt for the declining heroism of contemporary Romans, using a range of different themes, including lust for power and desire for old age to illustrate his argument.

So glad you were entertained. I used to watch this movie every week. That HanZimmer soundtrack is epic. This is based on real stuff. Marcus and Commodus were Caesars. Commodus was a gladiator trained guy. Rumor has a gladiator was his real father. He ruled in Rome while Daddy was out of town. His guards one day tired of him and removed him from office. This is a better version of 1964 FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE. There were lots of gladiator and Hercules type movies around then. Most really cheesy. Keep the faith, babe.

Romance languages! Derived from Latin, after 2,000 years, they are more related to each other than to Latin itself. Spanish (489 million) Portuguese (283 million) French (77 million) Italian (67 million) Romanian (24 million)

Marcus Aurelius was a fantastic emperor, in the film and in real life and like in real life, he failed his son. Fathers focus so much on what they'll create and leave behind (and obviously to their sons and daughters) that they forget that once they're gone, their son will SOMEHOW have to take over and hold onto what they've inherited. How on Earth do they expect them to do that if they failed them as a father?

43:34 He was originally supposed to be the one in the final scene buying the little figures in the arena. But before they finished shooting the whole movie, the actor passed away in a bar from a heart attack. Instead of recasting and reshooting the role, they made it where his character dies in the movie.. The actor had a very long career in to movie industry.

ancient roman generals paid their armies from their own pockets. Soldiers' pay was made in three instalments of 75 denarii in January, May and September. Domitian changed the intervals to three monthly and thus increased pay to 300 denarii. Under Severus he raised pay once more to an estimated 450 denarii. Caracalla gave a substantial increase of 50% probably to 675 denarii.

The huge German guy is Rolf Mueller. A big time bodybuilder in the 80s after Arnold. He was amazing. The undefeated gladiator is Sven Ol Thorsen. Ben acting in Hollywood since 1980. First movie was Conan the Barbarian. And to this day, has never learned English! 😮😮😮

Have you ever seen Rome by HBO and the BBC? It's a 2-season show about the end of the Republic and the start of the Empire, with an amazing cast (not that many famous Hollywood folks, but lots of experienced stage actors etc). It features many of the historical characters one would expect (Julius Ceasar, Marc Anthony, Cicero, Cleopatra, Augustus, ...) but much of it is shown through the eyes of 2 soldiers coming home from the Gallic war.

3:50 No, that was a fellow Roman, so that was a smile of recognition as he held back his blade.

The soundtrack was one of Hans Zimmer's early ones before he started doing everything. I also recommend his soundtrack to Hannibal (2001).

I love some of the accuracies of the film, like the story Commodus told about Claudius, concerning the buzzing bees, which really happened.

@@BissFlix I stand corrected! Claudius was very clever and devious and had numerous people assassinated and he had spoiled many plots against his life, but my latest fact check shows that this particular story was invented solely for the film. Yet, it would have been along the lines of something Claudius would have said and done during his reign, so the story on the surface certainly seemed to be factual. Best to you-

I took the "death smiles at us all, all we can do is smile back" to heart. Other than my belief that some of us are leterally born for war, smiling back at all of my near deaths in iraq and afghanistan kept my mind clear of any possible ptsd.

10:45 during the roman principate or early imperial era the title of Princeps (first citizen) was what we call emperor and the title was not mandatory to be inherited by blood but it was chosen by the current caesar with the "approval" of the senate. At least that was the theory behind the process.
