Great stuff as always. Learn so much from you guys. Explains why 10.5 degrees is the most common loft in golf shops as it seems to work best for around average speeds. However would really like to see a 10.5 against 12.0 at a slower swing speed. Would the 12 outperform the 10.5 as we slower swingers have been told?

Another great video with oodles of excellent information. One thing to consider is the desired shape of the shots. Lofting up usually adds a little more "draw", while removing loft adds "fade". It helps to know this when considering the "standard" loft of the driver as your starting point. For instance, if the loft you want is 9º, a standard head at 8º, lofted up to 9º, might encourage a draw. The opposite is true for a standard head of 10º, when lofted down to 9º, might promote a slight fade. To the individual, there may be a preference.

I have recently changed my stock Fujikura Pro XLR8 61 stiff shaft for a MCA Tensei CK White X 60 but left the head at 8.5*. The ball would just fall out of the sky. After watching this I changed the loft to 10.5 and could not hit a bad shot on the range. I felt like I could just hit the ball as hard as I wanted and it would just go and go. I will see how things perform on the course later this week. Thanks for all of the great information.

Great video. As an avid TXG watcher I am not sure why I had not seen this one before! Interestingly fitted only a week or so ago from an R9 10.5 head into a Ping G410 12* head with 2* up delivery giving circa 14* launch angle with c.2400 spin which seemed to come out higher and squeeze out some more height and carry distance. Seems my fitter might have got it about right! 👍🏼

My old driver was spinning way too much and when I went to get fitted for a new one, all I knew was that I wanted to get my spin number as low as I possibly could. With the new driver I'd get the odd ball that would drop out of the sky and I had no idea of the concept of spin helping with stability. That simple way of explaining it makes so much sense - I feel like I have a clearer understanding of whats happening just with those few words

The right term on spin and how it affects ball speed is more energy is converted into spin and therefore the drop in ball speed. Almost like brakes on a car works where it takes movement energy and turning it into heat. Energy simply changes form. Its not less energy transfer but rather changing into another form of energy aka spin
@clubchampionmedia
@clubchampionmedia 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Heinrich! Just to clarify for everyone, what you're referring to is when we mentioned the 12º driver having a less efficient energy transfer (or less ball compression) than the 10.5º driver which produced a bit more ball speed with about the same club head speed.

Really useful information. I play a Cobra AMP Cell Pro driver set to 10.5 degrees. I bought it used with an Ozik Matrix Black Tie 6M3 Stiff. I really like the ball flight, which looks fairly medium to my old school eye, but most people I play with hit drives way higher than I do. Makes me wonder if I'm leaving distance on the table, given how different the modern ball is. Hoping to get to a launch monitor center soon to find out.

Thanks for your feedback/info on Driver loft. Much appreciated. So if lower than optimum Driver loft gives rise to slice/hooks/dispersion, what are your thoughts on current irons with very strong lofts compared with those of few years ago? Does it follow that a 29* 7 Iron is potentially more likely to give rise to bad shots compared with a 34* 7 Iron...and so on for stronger 6,5,4 Irons? The good shots will produce greater distance, I accept, but what about less than pure shots?

I feel my driver launches borderline too high and I'm sure I'm hitting a few degrees up. I got myself on a simulator and found out i was getting 4500-5000 spin on my driver, with an ascending angle of attack. Granted I fade the ball so it'll add more, so the pro there had me crank the loft down to 9 degrees from 10.5 and now it's at about 2600-3000 with a fade. Where I play is very windy, so it would actually help me but i need to get out on the course and test it. Because if i can't get the ball in the air enough then I'm not sure what i'll do.

@garrettnobles8956
@garrettnobles8956 5 жыл бұрын
My OpenMind 4 degrees up means you have a lot of potential for distance but your main concern when swinging up that amount is what your dynamic loft is. If you’re leaning back on that thing or have it way to far forward in your stance and your dynamic loft is high 20s you’re losing distance. Your problem would be a ball that’s to high with to much spin and your miss would be a top shot. Good dynamic loft for your attack angle would be 15-16.

@clubchampionmedia
@clubchampionmedia 6 жыл бұрын
If we were to continue the fitting to dial it in, the 9.5 may have ended up giving us that slight spin reduction we were looking for - or we might have tried a shaft change as well. For the purposes of this video though we just wanted to illustrate the differences in ball flight numbers when the only variable changed was the loft of the driver head.

Do you guys think the way companies advertise the adjustable hosel stuff is a bit deceiving?. I don't think most people understand that "changing the loft" is NOT really changing loft but simply opening or closing the face so you "square" the club when grounded at address. If A head is stamped 9.5 but really measures 9.8* that never changes....so if you lower the loft 1 degree all you really do is open the FA or if you increase loft you shut the face.......I always get drivers with exact specs bc if someone makes a major "loft adjustment" all you really do is make face 3 or 4 degrees closed or open which kind of sucks.....Hence the need to "cherry pick heads" and keep these things in neutral.....Getting wrench happy is not ideal bc you shut and open the face....not really change actual measured static loft
@monotts5218
@monotts5218 6 жыл бұрын
Agree. Tom Wishon has done an excellent video on adjustable lofts explaining the open/closed heads.
@heatingworld911
@heatingworld911 6 жыл бұрын
Ya, if a player needed 10 degrees I would guarantee if they cherry picked a head that was measured 10 and neutral or maybe a little open FA that would have better numbers than a head that was artificially "wrenched" to a certain loft. I know from experience I had best results with adapter neutral or a slight adjustment....If you get wrench happy it gets goofey spin and not as consistent
@Mjwest23
@Mjwest23 6 жыл бұрын
Heating World if you have this knowledge though, wouldn't this help if you can find your optimal for the weekend golfer for a longer period of time? And adjust accordingly as your swing changes or speed changes. Or if you don't adjust the face angle at address, the closed or open face could help shape your shot to where you need it. I just think it's a matter of explaining the adjustable hosel to the consumer. You're right, I don't like it explained as adding loft. Most golfers won't square the face angle. But with the knowledge of how it works I think it's extremely beneficial and helpful to adjust along with your shot.
@heatingworld911
@heatingworld911 6 жыл бұрын
Ya, having the info is no doubt the key......bc it gives people flexibility....if they hook or slice they can realize close or open the face to help. I just know that most people are clueless and if they have a 10.5 head and think it goes too high they just jack it down thinking oh great now my head is 9* but they also just opened the face like 2 or 3 degrees. It is much like when the hosels have a standard or draw mode....all that does to draw is make the club more upright lie when you go to draw mode. Overly upright likely causes toe misses.....The hosel thing is fine if you realize EVERYTHING you are doing.....it is just that when you attempt to change 1 variable you are always changing 2 or 3 things rather than 1. Every click of wrench you are changing face angle and lie angle....multiple variables. That is why Tour Issued Heads are measured for exact loft, lie, and FA.....they cherry pick the specs they want.....

I have my driver set to 8.5 degrees, I have a pretty consistent swing but no matter what I do I can't get the ball flight lower of the spin down, I've had the ball actually hit and come back in the fairway and even when I put the ball more towards the middle of my stance I still only get about a yard of rollout. My drive averages about 240-250 total distance, and the high ball flight gives me huge issues going into the wind because it goes up and straight down barely 200 yards out.

As someone with Driver SS of around low 80s I have been told by number of Pros I need to look at loft 11.5*/12.5* so I can produce enough height/"hang time". Appreciate it's a generalisation depending on swing etc but yes/no? Also told that higher lofts produces less side spin and therefore slices. Lastly, as before, can you recommend Club Fitter near East Midlands, UK
@clubchampionmedia
@clubchampionmedia 6 жыл бұрын
At that swing speed it is likely you'd benefit from a higher loft of 11º+, assuming you aren't creating excess launch/spin in your swing in other ways. More backspin should stabilize the ball flight for you as well - as you saw in this video the low lofted driver produced the most curvature and widest dispersion.

Really liking your videos! What are your thoughts on the Titleist 917 D3? It performs very similarly for me to how you described the SLDR, in that when you strike it well, it's brilliant, but when you mis-strike it, it's very difficult to control...

Depends on many factors but any time you have a lower spin head (CG further forward) you're likely to sacrifice some forgiveness. Good head though! Did you see this video we did on it? >> kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kM6WrZVqsdyoYKM.html

TXG Tour Experience Golf I would like you make me a driver. When I give you my numbers you can pick model, loft shaft, ( I prefer 44 inches, which I will still choke down) kick point or bend profile. Your video with Lindsay Knowlton caught my attention because my numbers are close to her starting point on that video. I am 78, but play younger. About 13 handicap due to terrible short game. My swing speed with driver is between 88and 94. I could do 94 if I were sure I would not snap hook left. Pretty straight ball flight, maybe soft draw. Accuracy important. Maybe ping g400 max. Don’t know if I want to put 500.00 in a shaft since I may not own it as long as Lindsay will enjoy hers. Angle of attack as high as up 5 or 6 but I can adjust. Right now I am playing 9.5 callaway razr fit. I could hit it fine with the stiff shaft that was in it but needing more height, I put an adila nvs 55 A flex in it. Works ok but maybe want the advantages of latest tech. On track an last year, I had them put a 43.5, 70 gram 3 wood shaft in a club and got the following: 5 to 6 pos. A of a, 18+ dynamic, 16.4 launch, 2200 to 2400 spin, 88 to 90+ sos and carried it 215 to 220. Dispersion is ok with any club I’ve owned, after getting used to it. Anytime I push right it is usually more alignment issue than trouble closing club face. Fast swing produces duck hook. Downcock firm and fast for my age. Want this to be my last investment, at least for a while, so please get me in a setup that is best for me. Make fairway metal 18 degree. I normally carry it about 190ish. I have been hitting tm rocketblz 5 wood at 19 degrees Ozick 55 r shaft. Contact me by phone for credit card info and any additional questions. Bill Johnson. 702 579 5586 or by email at carbilj@gmail.com btw I am 5’ 10 and 190 lbs medium size hand 3and 3 eighths longest finger 7.5 wrist crease to longest finger. I am right handed. Currently playing ping g30 irons with graphite shafts with senior flex. Have golfpride lite 25 gram grips to get more swing wt. they are standard size. Like the wt. don’t like the texture so much. Have always enjoyed win dritech but again I want to know where the club head is. Club heads do not have to match nor do the shafts. You pick. Talk later. I live in Nevada so I will be able to use them ASAP. Anxious to get started. Bill

I hit my 9.5 with 15-15.7 launch carry 245-250, but it is super high, I cranked my driver down to 7.5 thinking that would fix my launch, but all it did was change my carry to 220-230... oof...

Great video - however while 145 MIGHT be the average for an AVID male golfer (I’d say 140), but not avg for all male golfers. More like 125-130.

Quick question, i have 12 degrees of loft on my driver, ive had it a few years now and since improving as a golfer i now notice that it spins up in the air a lot... last time i checked it was around 3000+ rpm.... I don't seem to get much roll either... would it be worth me purchasing a 9.5 degree head? Thanks, Love the video's, this has become my favourite channel.

@clubchampionmedia 6 жыл бұрын
Make sure you test lower lofts on a launch monitor Peter, but if you're spinning it over 3000rpm with your 12º then going down in loft would very likely help.

TXG Tour Experience Golf thank you for the reply I tested it at the range tonight and it was at 1900 lowest and 2200 at the highest so lower than I thought with the ball launching at 16 degrees the numbers looked optimal. Keep up the good works guys!

Super interesting subject, this was done with different heads of the same model? What would this experiment look like with one head and using the loft sleeve to adjust loft?
@clubchampionmedia
@clubchampionmedia 6 жыл бұрын
Different results possibly, using the loft sleeve to change it would have affected the face angle.

Hi TXG..a quick question..i'm currently using M4 driver with 9.5 driver loft...i'm having a thought to adjust the loft a slight higher..but if i'm not mistaken..if u adjust the loft higher..the clubface will slightly close..the doubt that i'm having is that i love to hit a fade for driver..however, after i adjust the loft a slight higher and try to hit it..i dun get the fade no more..does it really effect the direction of the ball if i adjust the loft?
@clubchampionmedia
@clubchampionmedia 6 жыл бұрын
Adjusting the loft up does close the face a degree generally so that may affect your ball flight pattern. Test it out though, you'd have to see what occurs in real life for your swing.

well, i've tested it out on the course..still trying to understand the twist face technology...Overall , i think my ball dispersion has been great after using m4 :) ..thanks

You cannot make the conclusions from what you’ve shown. If you correct carry distances and spin rates to 150 mph, you’d see that there is practically no difference in carry. What will change is launch angle, and, like water flowing out of a hose, if you increase the angle, you’d get a little more carry for same flow speed. Spin loft IS the parameter to examine, but it would have to be quite high to get a decrease in distance, for this ~100 mph club head speed. But strike is king!
@clubchampionmedia
@clubchampionmedia 6 жыл бұрын
From our test: 8.5º was too low spin, 9.5º was close, 12º had too high spin. Sure you could knock off the 2MPH of extra ball speed that you're referring to on the 9.5º and maybe then the carry distances would be similar for all three heads - but what about total distance, stability, dispersion, performance in the wind, etc. The point of the video was to make golfers aware of the differences in performance that occur when only changing driver head loft, and that was accomplished.

Do you guys have any suggestions for someone that has a decending drive angle at contact? I'm currently .5 handicap in a 8.5 Titleist 915 D2 8.5 loft A1 setting. With a Aldila RIP 86 gram shaft! I've done this to reduce back spin. I feel I've lost some distant, do to weight of shaft!
@clubchampionmedia
@clubchampionmedia 6 жыл бұрын
Unlikely that any shaft will make a significant reduction in your spin numbers Cory, you may find something that helps it a bit but nothing will be as significant an influence as your attack angle. That being said, I think you could look into a lower spin head. If you can, find a location with a launch monitor to demo a 9.5º or even 10.5º Taylormade M3 with both weights moved forward. That is a super low spin head, and the added loft should help you achieve a bit more launch as well for more distance.
