My left-handed dad taught me a lot of things as a child, so I picked up a lot of his characteristics. I call myself ambidextrous, but not exactly. There are some activities I do better with one side over the other & vice-versa. I've had an injury to my left shoulder & that has really crippled me. I also mouse with my left. I'm a neuroscientist & this has always fascinated me. Although science is my game, I'm pretty right-brained.

There’s a term you should know about that exists to describe your “ambidextrous” characteristics, as you call them. Start referring to yourself as cross-dominant instead. Now that I mention it, I’m actually kind of surprised that you’re a neuroscientist that doesn’t know about cross-dominance…

My granddaughter was born without the left side of her brain due to a brain injury in utero. She has defied a lot of odds. She's not typical but don't count her out. Language Is tough. But she communicates. Total miracle. The neurologist call it neuroplasticity. I think we've only tipped the iceberg on what we know about the brain And how adaptable it really is. My granddaughter diagnosis is Cerebral palsy. She has been going to therapy unit since she was an infant. I think it worth noting. That other children with the same diagnosis with both sides of the brain don't do well as her. It's really a head scratcher. Thanks for the info.

I'm glad I wasn't so strongly left-lateralized that I experienced any difficulties as a leftie. Maybe I just got used to being in a right-handed world but really I never noticed any persecution for being left-handed. It was just a neat trivia fact that so few people wrote with their left hand to me. The way I like to think of my hands is that my left is the smart one that does smart/tricky stuff like writing, while my right hand does strong stuff like bouncing a ball or other athletic stuff.

I used to have a friend who was left handed but used to believe that he was right handed. So , he had a problem with handwriting and he was actually surprised when other kids in the school wrote with right hand easily. He used to be very introverted because of his bad handwriting and it also effected his grades . One day when other kids jokingly asked him to write with his left hand , as they thought it would be more worse , but he took it seriously and started practicing to write with his left hand and he was actually good at it. His handwriting changed and his personality too , it is stunning how small things can effect people a lot , many people don't even believe in his story but it is true . Now he is a District Football player and he want to play for India one day.

If you ever see this, I’m curious if you know whether he is left or right footed. As someone who is 100% confident that they are almost entirely right handed, I’ve been having doubts about possibly being left footed. I always used my right foot like everyone else and struggled as a child. Now that I’m older, after having tried to experiment with it, I somehow feel more naturally drawn to the ball with my left foot. I’m still not sure which one I am, because my left foot is years of experience behind my right foot even if it is my strong foot. I wonder if your friend experiences any similar cross dominance.

During practicing skating 20 years ago I had to start practicing turning left as effectively as I was naturally doing right. After about 5 years i became aware I could eat as well with my left hand as I did right. So it made me realize I could write almost as well left handed. Anyway very interesting. Came naturally by concentrating left so much.

I'm so lucky as a left hand I was always protected by my dad and big brother against the bullies. Before I started school, my aunties would mock me to "encourage" me to use my right hand but my dad told them where to get off. In school, an older male classmate bullied me for being left handed and my brother came to my rescue.

He was lucky, I got hit every time I used my left hand till I finally gave in and started using my right hand. But as a teenager, my left hand suddenly started taking back its dominance as I randomly started eating with it and everything. If I am totally unconsciously starting to right something I do it with my left hand.

I'm cross dominant, my handedness was tested when I was young because there is a strong correlation with learning difficulties and cross dominance, both of my hands have the same reaction times and I vary my hand depending on the task. I'm not true ambidextrous, as I'll favour one hand depending. I also don't have a dominant eye as they switch from time to time. I believe I am close to 50/50 in my brain usage, give or take a few points. I probably use the right slightly more as I use it to write with but my left arm feels naturally stronger. What I've always wanted to find out is, if there is a correlation between handedness and use of inverted controls on computer games?

ME TOO!!! I find that regarding activities that require finesse and control in my wrist (i.e; writing, brushing teeth, combing hair etc.) I execute with my left hand, and physical activities like throwing and catching using my right. A strange exception to this rule is that I somehow prefer arm wrestling with my left, despite the fact that my right arm is naturally stronger. Also I'm left eye dominant but strongly right footed.

I'm ambidextrous... I can do almost all activities including playing the guitar, writing and sports equally well with both hands. If there is a deficit in one hand due to a lack of training I can catch up to the other quite fast with a bit of training. Unfortunately it's something I started to actively refine rather late. Had I done it during my schooling days I could have excelled during that time. I see most people cant and it sort of bothers me that it not natural for most to use their hands like this. As for your question, I dont naturally use inverted controls in gaming but I do know a very right handed guy who does.

Depends on which side the person I'm talking to (I don't cup my hand), for talking in the phone call I prefer using my left ear... (probably because it can hear better?), but now I'm thinking about it, I think nowadays I kinda prefer the right ear (probably because now my left hearing getting worse than my right?) 4. I use my left hand first (closed all the finger, then opening it one by one from the thumb to the pinky), then continue using the right hand (or using the right hand for counting the tens decimal place) 5. Both... (with the thumb pointing to the front) 6. Mostly left for the bottom part (below the shoulder), right for the upper part (above the shoulder) 7. Left hand holding right hand (standard for marching) 8. Left on top without thinking, don't have to watch myself to do it the other way, just have to conscious about it... 9. The same way as you do... The other way around is confusing... 10. I don't understand... 11. Right on top...

The term goofy-footed in snowboarding, skateboarding, surfing and everything to do with sports in that area actually originates from one episode in an old Mickey Mouse cartoon, where Goofy is seen surfing with his right foot forward, left foot back. This eventually caught on as a name for a right-foot forward person on a board, so thanks Goofy, for that.

I went to a catholic school , in kindergarten I was "corrected" from using my left hand , when beginning to learn how to write. Overall I believe it had a massive impact, or shifting , on who I was to become. I actually did not think on it much , I grew up thinking I was weaker as I was using my non dominant hand much more, when working out ,my right arm would tire more and my shoulder would give out. I thought couldn't throw a good punch for the longest time cause I'd always use my non dominant hand. I still to the day am right handed , though some what ambidextrous, it definitely has opened my eyes to letting children be pioneers of thier own bodies , as far as deciding what hand feels more natural to use. I'm not including all the whining, but I wish I had been left alone. No pun intended.

As an ambidextrous person who my kindergarten teacher thought I seemed to favor my left, I was taught to write left handed, I can say with experience of what you would have had to go through, that your Catholic school teaching you to write right handed was most likely the best thing for both of you. Writing left handed sucks and is totally uncomfortable and takes a lot of extra practice in a totally different manner than right handed people, plus you can’t use a binder to write in, a spiral notebook sucks (I figured out how to write backwards in it instead but not until college) unless someone is extremely left handed dominant (they don’t have a right hand just kidding, but not Really) then they should be taught to write right handed. As far as throwing punches or a baseball etc that’s different, but whatever your difficulty was being a lefty who was taught to write left handed, I guarantee you that your schooling would have been more difficult to go through as a lefty.

I try to work with it so that I could use it if I really needed to. I play guitar now so that is also working my left hand and I used to play clarinet. I was always extremely right handed. I even cut with my right hand and then pass over the fork to the right to eat. However I do not understand these issues. If I want to do something with the left I can do that just fine or with a little practice. I can use scissors, a mouse, and I can support with my right and do the action with my left, and use my left if it's just closer to an object. Writing/brushing teeth is a little harder, or tying your shoe laces ''upside down.'' (I can do it but it took several tries.) If I do it right handed I open with right over the left, pass with right thumb between two fingers and go under. Set up the right loop over the left thumb.Curl left over the loop. Pass with left thumb to right thumb and index finger. Pull. I did not realize there were all these little motions until I tried to open with the left hand and curl the right over the loop! I do believe the motions with both hands are the most difficult and interesting. Do more people feel this way? Can it have something to do with lefthandedness in the family or is it just practice?

@@hugoq2511 ..... The first point of interest is the recombination frequency of humans and how recombination increased at meiosis in concert with rising intelligence. The seminal paper (the first) is "Mammalian Chiasma Frequencies as a test of two Theories of Recombination" Burt-Bell, 1-April-1987, Nature. The frequency of recombination in humans is astounding and this points to recombination as a driving force of our brains evolutionary rise.

I'm cross dominant, meaning I write with my left-hand, and favor mostly everything else with my right hand. I can't perform tasks equally with both hands or switch between the two, so it isn't ambidexterity. I always have a hard time answering people who ask about my handedness, it always just leads to some convoluted explanation that ends up at "I don't really know? Both? But not really?" Because handedness is typically determined by which hand you write with, I'd be considered left-handed, but writing is basically the only thing I use my left-hand for, so it gets very confusing. I've just resorted to telling people I'm cross dominant and going through with that whole spiel.

I'm ambidextrous, until I was 6 I actually had trouble crossing the midline. Now I'm basically right handed when it comes to writing, it feels natural to write with both but my handwriting when writing with left is at the level of a 1st grader. Pretty much everything else (apart from typing on a smartphone) I use both hands equally well, though right probably bit more often. I still default to using my left hand if something is on my left side rather than crossing the midline.

At tennis practice, my teacher would tell all the students to do a fore-hand. Of course, since everyone in class was right-handed except me, it was their fore-hand and my back-hand. When I do a fore-hand, it's their back-hand. And at school, there were only right-handed desks, and they only provided right-handed scissors. As a kid, I always wondered why the seats were only for right-handed people, why the scissors they provided in school were all right-handed, and why the teacher couldn't just remember to feed me the ball from the left side and feed the ball from the right side so all the kids in tennis (including me) would do a fore-hand, and why they can't have little tables for both left and right-handed kids (although there comes the issue of left-handed people bumping arms with the right-handed people), and for their to be right and left-handed scissors for all the kids to use so nobody, no matter their handedness, would be uncomfortable. But then one day, in 7th grade, when I was doing my math homework in my textbook, the question went something like: "According to a recent study, 1 in every 85 people are left-handed. If that's true, how many percent of the population's left-handed?" or something. I was _VERY_ shocked to see that problem and so, the next day, I looked it up on google to see if it was true. It said "approximately 10% of the human population is left-handed, and 90% is right-handed." And so, the question I asked myself, why all the left-handed people had to go through unnecessary discomfort, (the right-handed scissors are straight up PAINFUL to use, though) all of it was finally answered. It was because we are rare. (why we live shorter lives, according to a study, is actually because of all the discomfort we go through, but dunno if that's true) So if you're left-handed, be proud. (We also have a whole day to ourselves, it's on August 13th, btw 👍🏼)

I'm confused. I write with my right hand, but can use my left if I want to. I eat right-handed, which is simply good manners where I come from. I play snooker left handed, as I do archery and throw a frisbee. I can switch from right to left whilst batting in softball. I pitch off my right foot, which is -- apparently -- unusual for a right-handed pitcher (it gives one heck of a spin!). I play golf right-handed, but putt left. I open doors and jars left. And my right hand does not know my PIN number. Oh, and my watch is on my right wrist. Someone explain that mess!

"Left out" doesn't refer to the left (vs right) side. This is left as in the past tense of to leave. Leave out. Left out. "Out in left field" refers to the fact that that's where you put the least skilled player in baseball because, since most batters bat right, very few pop fly balls are going to left field. If most batters batted left, right field would be the dumping ground.
