Jackson, I followed your advice for how to get your cat to let you sleep through the night. I thought my cat was the exception-that nothing would work. But guess what, within 4 days of consistency on my part, my cat fully stopped meowing through the night. We no longer get woken up by her. Thank you so much for your videos!

The "just ignore them" thing is soooo hard but it definitely works. I accidentally left Nova's dehydrated meat soaking on the counter and she got at it one night, and for the next week or so, she kept jumping up on the counter which is not a behaviour I want! But after 5-6 days of me not responding and her finding nothing, she stopped doing it again. Ignoring a cat is kind of like quitting smoking: the first week is the hardest :P

@@2020Dumpsterfire -- Maybe get yourself another chair, or have an easy platform so your senior kitty can be beside you. She likes being with you, likes your scent on the chair, and it's warm and cozy, all good things from a cat's point of view. You can either alternate between two chairs or have a nice nearby spot for her to hang out with you. (Heck, it works for a young cat too.) -- I sympathize. My senior cat wants (and needs) extra attention. -- Lately, he's started getting between me and the keyboard and screen, and he lies down and wants attention. I'm having trouble resisting because he's getting old and frail, and the junior miss teenage kitten pesters him. The extra chair or place to curl up is just an idea to try. )

@@benw9949 Its actually not my chair but my spot on the bed which is only a twin so i have no where else to sit, and she has a nice pillow right next to me but prefers my pillow or my spot lmao. Its just the moment I get up I have to put something there or she'll steal the spot. I just cave and give her treats, she never bothered with treats when she was young so she can have them now. She also finds her ways to crawl onto my lap tho she prefers even closer like on my chest. She puts her paws on my right arm and basically just keeps them on me as I continue to type and work on my laptop lol. Pandemic hasnt helped the neediness, now if I just leave my room to go to the kitchen shell yowl for me.

@@2020Dumpsterfire I recommend looking up a JG video and finding small ways to help her gain some independence so you can leave the house for essential errands and likely even return to work. What he said in this video ab "enriching environment"--giving her other favorable places to play, hide, perch--may be a good place to start.

I solved this problem giving my cat a routine. I have gotten really lucky that my cat takes cues from my routine instead of time or her own desires. She knows she gets breakfast AFTER I am ready for the day regardless of me getting up at 6am or 10am. She has never once tried to wake me up because me waking up doesn’t mean food. She also knows that when I get home from work she gets a hello snuggle and then I go change clothes. Only after I am out of my work clothes does she get food so she won’t ask for it until I am done. If she’s not getting and afternoon snack today then we skip the behavioral cue. That means we can do routines whenever we want because her cue comes from our behavior. It’s much easier than trying to stick to a cat routine. Just incorporate your cat’s needs into your routine.

Not only does my Princess Cuddles wake me at 4 am, she has trained her “sister” to do the same 🙀🙀😹. They walk back and forth on my tum and chest until I get up. If I close my bedroom door, they seriously perform Reveille, substituting MEOWS for a bugle. I would not put it past them to find a trumpet and learn to play it, anything to make me rise and feed quicker than I already am. Oh and if I get up to pee, say around 2:30am or 3:00, they have no trouble following me and doing serious rubbing, all in the hope that human peeing in cat language means FEED ME NOW😹😹. But I LOVE them dearly.

My house is FULL of toys and scratching posts and towers and windows everywhere to look outside. My cat will SCREAM and throw a tantrum - only getting louder and louder if he's ignored. No amount of ignoring him works, so I'm just genuinely at my wit's end. (The puzzle toy IS nice, but doesn't stop him from yelling for what he wants - which is usually to go outside - and he DOES get to go outside, but he can't be out there ALL the time. Now the kitten is learning from him, to start crying and scratching the door to go out.) The babies are hyper intelligent, and know that if they just keep meowing louder, eventually we can't take it anymore.

My cat just runs around doing this - he doesn't always want anything. He does have me trained in the mornings tho to let him out. These two are very much like my two - the laid-back black kitty (who's also older) and the bratty teen b&w. Unfortunately, he can't just be loose at night because of the dog.

Our cat's favorite toys are Q-tips and she does that yowl when she at the bottom of the stairs, playing with them and kicking the rug with her hind legs and tearing the rug apart. She does it like she is in her happy place, killing her Q-tips. We find them often under the rug, as if she buried her kill. It's really adorable.

I work from home too. My cat howls sometimes when I’m in my office with the door closed. I have a white noise machine so she doesn’t bother my clients with her pathetic howls. But I just tell her when she does that I say Wait or I ignore her. I have a routine with her with food and play and now she knows when I’m off work. She is at the door and we play right away. She brings her toys to the door. I give her cat TV to keep her distracted. And lots of toys. I have toys for her to with. She loves cat puzzles that I give her as well. It keeps her busy snd happy. And she knows our days rhythm that I keep pretty much to an exact science. It keeps her so happy snd out of mischief.

Dear Jackson, precious advices of yours as usually :). What i have noticed while observing my many cats is: they talk to us in two ways 1. using voice and 2. using eyes when we use to keep eye contact, i always know what she wants when i look in her eyes, also she knows what in my eyes! good things he recieving from my eyes or my "no", last time i'm using gesture shake hands in special way and she knows it means "no" or not now. cats are clever they learn very good.

Jackson Galaxy, I just want to say a huge thank you. My fiance and I are adopting 2 stray cats soon.We are getting Sarabi the mom and Ginger her baby home tomorrow. I am so excited and have been preparing (mostly shopping lol) so much trying to welcome them to our home. We have never had cats before and the shelter did told us one of the strays is afraid of human and might take a lot of time to warm up to us and that we might never be able to pet her. This worries me so much. I don’t mind that we might never be able to pet her but I would hate to see if she can’t get used to life with us. I binged your videos to try and prepare myself as much as I can. And though I still have no idea what’s going to happen, I now understand so much more about cats and I feel as prepared as I can be. I am so excited to see them tomorrow! Thank you!

@@tee3219 I think the kitten helped her just as much! Kitten naturally warmed up to humans very easily and it's getting more confident in our home every day! This help mom to relax a little and explore the space as well! She's still skittish around human. She stares, hisses and extend her claws if we get too close (for some reason more often in the morning). But she is improving at, I think, a great pace! Hopefully, she can relax and fully be integrated into her forever home soon.

Its really more of a natural dominance dance between owner and cat living in a living space. I admit to being a fiddle for her to play with and boy can she play a remarkable melody, only thing is, I enjoy it as much as she does. When she demands her dinner at lunch time so be it but she seems to always regret it come dinner time. 😉😋

This was very helpful - I got a cat during COVID (not on impulse!) and I think in the early days I was so keen to meet her needs (violin) that she sort of calls the shots now by just sitting under my chair and staring with a rumble every now and then. 95% of the time I'm happy to take a break and play but as you said, eventually we're going back to work and she'll be really confused and abandoned :(

FYI, cats pawing at cabinets isn't necessarily for food. i've never kept cat treats stored in my cabinets, but i have a cat who will try to get inside by kitchen and bathroom cabinets anyway when he's excited and bored. for him, it's a forbidden, novel place to explore, and he likes being inside small, cozy spaces. (and as someone mentioned in another comment, if he makes enough noise trying to open the doors, he knows i'll come to give him attention, which reinforces the behavior.) i have to be careful closing my dresser drawers, because sometimes he'll hide inside those, too.

Mr Stripes, my childhood cat, had Grandma absolutely whipped whenever she would visit us for 3-4 days, usually a long weekend. We kept the cat treats in this one pantry, there were claw marks on the door where he'd try to break in. He'd pace, meow, try to get us to open that door to feed him a treat, but we just generally ignored him unless it was bed time and we had to lock him into his layer, the rec room and garage. He knew that time of night, knew he was getting a treat, knew the ritual of getting locked up. He really didn't pester us cause we ignored him, but when Grandma came around, she sat in the den watching TV or reading most of the day, that cat would howl at the pantry, she'd swear at the cat, feed him a treat every 20 minutes to get him to shut up, then he'd howl again at the pantry for a treat, she'd get up, feed him another treat, swear at him. Cat had Grandma trained, that was the ONLY person he'd howl at the pantry for treats lol. Didn't see her for 4-6 months, within 30 minutes of her in the house he'd start howling by the pantry for a treat.

Jackson- I set up a storage crate so young Lily (a blue tortie) could jump from the bed to the window, where I added a catway board to the sill, and jump to a nap basket on top of a storage crate stack. She is such a good jumper now, that she greets me when I come home by leaping to my shoulder and nuzzling both cheeks. (is she French?) Thank you for your advice- she's my first indoor cat (I couldn't face having another cat killed by a dog) and I never knew I could be this close to a cat.

Our puddy used to shout repeatedly at us as soon as we got back home from doing the food shopping when he was 6 months old and we first got him as a rescue. I told my husband to ignore him. He then tried dashing past us, getting underfoot and racing in and out, clawing at the carpet in the dining room where we could see him. When we still ignored him, he kept jumping on the cupboards where we were wiping down the shopping. At this point we said no ... placed him gently into the dining room and closed the door in his face. He would shout and shout. When he stopped for more than a couple of minutes, he was let back into the kitchen. It took only 3 food shops for him to calm down and behave! As soon as he started shouting, I'd say no quietly and he'd stop immediately. Cats aren't daft! They're highly intelligent and we should gently teach them manners just like we teach our dogs to behave in the home. Jackson Galaxy is BRILLIANT 🙂

hello Jackson ! can you please make a video about how is it ok or not to leave your cat alone when you're on holidays ? I've met several people who told me they just left their cat ( it's a cat ! they can survive like this! )alone with enough food/water, and how their cat behavior might have changed afterwards. It's maybe for 3 days but someone told me 3 weeks !!! i feel in my stomach that's not ok ! thanks for your videoooos, bisous from France !
