Even easier, ignore SubtitleEdit and switch MediaInfo in tree view. When you see the subtitle tracks in the tree view it will tell you how many "Elements" there are. The smaller number of elements will be the forced track.

This video turned up at random on my feed. It's odd because I've just upgraded my old DVD player to an LG Blu Ray. Yes... I downgraded the firmware. I have started to accumulate quite a few Blu Ray HRD disks I plan on ripping so I can stream them properly. My caveat to this since I'll be turning 70 this coming November, I prefer having all subs displayed including Alien jibber jabber. I collect 80s horror and scifi and have an extensive collection of collectibles including a lot of movies from that period. I SUBSCRIBED so I can review a lot of your videos here and see what other helpful information you have. Thanks again!

Nice. Up until now I've been pulling down all the (en) subtitles and if there's foreign diologue I switch between the 2-3 to find the one that's forced. They're only small, so no problem with space and I often watch with my elderly dad who needs full subs, so it's good to have them all so he can follow along. Where your method shines tho is with 3D. I've just started investing in expanding my 3D library with the new VR tech that's recently been available with decent lenses (wasn't worth it until now). It's easy enough to switch subs during normal viewing, but with a VR headset on it's a bit more clunky. having it set the right subs as default all the time will make it a better experience. Got a lot of used and a few new 3D disks coming, so it'll be good to get the method down early to save reprocessing

This was pretty interesting. I've always just ripped all the English subtitle tracks, and if there is an issue when watching a particular movie I'll try each one. I don't know that I'm ready to commit to going this far, but I'm glad to know that it's possible. I also appreciate you showing how to rename items in MakeMKV. I didn't know I could do that. I have a couple of double disk DVDs I had to combine using another program, and that process stripped out the audio language names. I was able to rename them with MakeMKV thanks to your video.

I don't have the patience to analyze every BluRay. What I do now is selecting every english subtitle (without force flag) when ripping. Later then, only when neccessary, I edit the mkv with "MKVToolNix GUI" and there I can skip subtitles and make the right one forced.

I mainly rip to MKV and when I have a problem with that I just do an ISO. I'm not really into a lot of foreign films. I would say less than 1% of my Movies are foreign. Movies that are a must have(big budget movies)I buy the 4k version. I don't rip my 4k Movies I just play them on my Oppo 203 which is only 4/5 ft from where I sit. Thanks for the great explanation on this subject!! In the scenario where I want to keep the main dialogue subtitles as optional and force the translation dialogue... is the flag for main dialogue just "d" and the flag for forced dialogue is "df"?
@Techthusiasm
@Techthusiasm Жыл бұрын
Thanks! You would only flag the forced, but keeping both requires a whole different level of work to edit everything so you have the main default sub track and then the forced flagged as forced within it. This is not how many discs are set up by default as well. It'll take much more effort and manual editing.

Thanks for these videos, just discovered your channel a couple weeks ago. I was wondering, how much more storage would it use to be less selective with the audio and subtitle tracks? For example, I understand wanting to extract the highest quality audio, but what about having a couple other choices selected as a fall back? Maybe to play on non-Dolby atmos equipment? How much data would say a 5.1 surround track on a 90 minute movie take to include? Same with just including all of the English subtitles, and maybe grab the Spanish too, just in case you have someone over who would like that? Thanks!
@Techthusiasm
@Techthusiasm Жыл бұрын
It would add more to keep the other audio tracks, but not all that much if you only kept one lower fidelity audio and more subtitles. Subtitles are really zero storage. It's just a text-style set of information. It just gets more involved tagging everything right when you try to keep multiple regular subs and have any potential forced ones work properly.

Not a question about subtitles, but why do you choose AnyDVD to make the ISO instead of using the backup feature in MakeMKV? I just started using MakeMKV, and I've noticed other KZfaqrs will use other software over the backup feature built into MakeMKV.
@Techthusiasm
@Techthusiasm 2 жыл бұрын
Good question. The same process can be done entirely with MakeMKV using back up for the same reasons. MakeMKV backs up to folder structure, and when dealing with a full disc I just prefer an ISO. It’s one file. Easier to move around, copy, restore from a delete if I need it back. I’ve long had a lifetime AnyDVD license so I’m just used to using it.

I’m still a bit confused about one part. When you load up the iso on SE you see there are tracks 3 and 5 and then go back to makemkv. How do you know for sure that the one you selected is #5 because as far as I’ve seen on makemkv it doesn’t show numbers.
@Techthusiasm

The numbers for the subtitles tracks, I have found, don’t actually seem to line up in any way that I can make sense. MakeMKV doesn’t show numbers, correct. SE will give them numbers though somehow from the meta data that does make it into the MKV. They are always sequential though, so you can still tell them apart.

Lots of films have the “forced” subtitles in separate tracks without actually being flagged as forced. I don’t a list and I don’t recall on those films specifically. That’s why you have to do the process of ripping all the subs and manually verifying any time there is more than one English subtitle track in the mastering.

Is there a way to merge subtitle tracks? I just built my first plex server and currently working on ripping all my DVDs, but have run into an issue with my first foreign language film which also has some english in it. There are 2 english subtitle tracks but they each only have some of the subtitles. The first subtitle track is just the english translations for the original language audio with no subs for the english parts of the film and the second track is more like CC with the sfx labeling and the subtitles for the english parts but no translation subs for the original language parts. Is there a way to easily merge the translation subs along with the CC english subs so I can have subtitles throughout the movie or am I stuck creating a new track and copying & pasting from the original 2 to make the merged file?

I look up the official movie title and release date via tMDB, rip it from disc to mkv with makemkvcon, convert to a Plex-ready mkv containing desired audio tracks and subtitle tracks using HandBrakeCLI, then transfer to my Plex Media Server and check the Plex library metadata to make sure the transfer was successful. My theater is Atmos and my living room is 2.2. I think I would disagree. I prefer just having a single audio track with no need to change or manually select things. It's perfectly fine to use the lossless Atmos tracks downmixed to PCM output via Infuse on my Apple TV in the living room. This should still sound much better and more dynamic than a native, lossy, lower bit rate track (unless that 2.0 track is PCM to start). I wouldn't want lossy DD in there.

But also, if everyone did that, there would be no demand for blu-rays and they wouldn't exist.

Based on my experience, the best software to convert Blu-ray to digital copy with desired subtitles is DumboFab Blu-ray Ripper because it features powerful Blu-ray decrypting ability, ultra-fast Blu-ray ripping speed, and excellent output quality.

I wouldn't recommend ripping that way. You could end up with a hornet's nest of subtitles in some cases that will be very hard to navigate and know what you are selecting during playback.
