They key is to stop at some point, once you have ticked the boxes you must reach a point where your next expenditure is limited to replacement and care. Quality is always worth spending on but it still comes back to cost per wear, I have expensive shoes but I have worn them almost daily for 25 years. Upfront expenses now a bargain.

My father at just shy of 80 years old passed away and always bought nice clothes for himself. For example: He never wore jeans and never owned chinos. He never shopped at high street general mens clothiers but shopped at boutique shops. He did this all his life and I remember going with him one day when he bought a pair of leather ankle height boots that cost $215 (in the 70s). When he passed away, my mom attended to his belongings and he had several closets in the home beyond his standard closet. In them she found new clothes with the price tags on them (not worn). I watched my mom become very bitter because knowing that she had to survive on what was saved (and what was not) she saw all these clothes as excess and nothing more. In one week she boxed everything up and donated it to charity (including his luxury car) as she did not want to see it and said it made he sick to the stomach. The hurt was so strong that she never asked her sons if they wanted anything from his estate. They were married for over 50 years and she felt betrayed.

What a terribly sad tale. To spend money on oneself is laudable from time to time. To spend money on oneself at the neglect of others, especially ones family dependents, seems downright selfish and cruel. At least the clothes were of help to others less fortunate.

@@billyo54 Mind you, my mother never went without and if she wanted a new car for herself or fur coat she got it however, it goes back to the topic for today: Is there a point where one can spend too much on clothing for oneself? As a child when my father bought those beautiful leather boots in the 70s, those same shoes would cost approximately $1,100 in today's dollars. That seems excessive as I am not sure how many people buy shoes at those prices today. As an aside, my dad called the boots 'car shoes' as they were shoes he would wear to a venue but would never walk in them on the streets. Bless him . LOL

Gosh! What a sad story. It sounds like there was perhaps a lot more going on during those 50 years beyond the contents of your father's closets, which your dear mother must have been fully aware of. The most telling parts are the abject disposal of his car (a conspicuous luxury) and the fact that neither you nor your brothers were offered anything from his estate. I am so sorry.

As long as you and your family have a decent shelter, food and means to live a good life, you do whatever sartorially. Even a pair of chinos, sportscoat and loafers can set you apart from most people these days. A lot of people in bigger cities these days dress as if they worked in the nearest gym.

To USAF Mark. (1) don’t buy MTM; buy bespoke. If you’re on this journey, it’s where you’ll to wind up anyway, and when you arrive you won’t want to wear anything else. So, get there sooner. (2) don’t commission a suit. A suit isn’t versatile enough for your purposes, and you don’t want this one suit to become your off duty uniform. Instead, commission a navy blazer, a sports jacket (brown or olive green w/subtle check maybe), and 3 pairs of trousers. This will allow you to put together multiple combinations, each looking great.

Literally came here to make the same as your second point - i was about to suggest he get a blazer first - will get far more use dressed up or down - especially as his daytime wear is his uniform rather than a business suit

Hi. Bought some tweed cloth from Fabworks (Dewsbury) and Abraham Moon (Guiseley) and had my fabric made into a superb 3 piece suit and extra trousers by a superb tailor based in Guiseley. Picked up the lot on 11th May (2024) and wow, what a result. Raymond Andrews, so much credit to you, sir. £715 for a 3 piece suit and trousers, using my own cloth. Anybody around the Leeds area, checkout the aforementioned names. I love Tweed herringbone cloth. Raymond is a magnificent tailor. I went out on Sat evening in Kirkstall Brewery after picking it up, with my wife into Leeds. Wore Trickers Tan Bourton Brogues to finish the ensemble. Too warm for the full 3 piece so I had just the waistcoat, trousers and pale blue shirt and shoes... It looked amazing. 👏👍

It’s an interesting question. I’d suggest slowing down a bit and buying wisely, perhaps some quality pre-owned bargains. Your taste and probably your size will change over time (both are always evolving throughout our lives). At 22 it’s important to start saving and investing. With compound interest rates the difference in later life could be hugely significant.

That is some very good sage advice for everyone Ash. For my work as a guide, I invested in a number of Harris Tweed blazers and waistcoats some time ago. They always feel like I'm wearing a big warm and comfortable tweed hug. I can dress them with up Chino's or down with jeans as needed, depending the job and location at the time. It doesn't need to break the bank but if one puts some thought into it and invests wisely, sure it will coat a little more at the start. Those well thought out garments, will stand the test of time, and travel throughout life with you.

From personal experience. I bought nice clothes from my late teens to early 20s. I never wore them; then, they just then didn't fit. Also, all you need is a nice body for clothes to look nice; now, all of my clothes are cheap store brand clothes that look expensive, and nice because they fit my body frame well.

I learned to laundry suits at home in my washing machine. I regularly go to flea markets, thrift shops and alike which sell pre-owned clothes. Suit separates are very affordable. All I have to do is to pay the alterations. All of the trousers, jackets and blazers I've got are pure wool. Ofc I'm also learning how to press a suit. I think I've spent more money on wool and cashmere scarves than to suit trousers and jackets. 😂

I have to say, I buy all my smart/formal clothes used. I have learned how to do simple alterations and how to resole, re-welt and refurbish goodyear welted shoes to a good standard only relying on a cobbler to do the actual outsole stitch as I cannot do that without a very expensive machine. I try to buy British or European made shirts and ties and suits/ suit coats from what were British firms. It is possible to buy these items a LOT cheaper than well known fashion items. We are lucky in the UK in that respect.

In my opinion, a very simple method to keep the peace in a partnership or marriage is to make a budget for your monthly expenses. Each partner should have a certain amount of money on his or her disposal, that he or she can spend for whatever they want. It doesn't matter if this is 20, 200 or 2000 USD per month. Just talk about it openly and honestly, come to an agreement, make a budget and stick to it.

What I would say: Learn how to invest in stocks and start putting money into the s&p500. You won't feel guilty if you invest more money into your future than you spend on clothes. I also see style as a somewhat passive hobby, personally I have investing and finance as a more active hobby. Also sometimes it's better to find a passion for the clothes you have rather than going for perfectionism, I think that's something to get to over time. 👍

There's enough quality advice here for several videos. My favorite tidbit of wisdom was to marry a woman with an expensive hobby. My wife's hobby is flying to Japan to visit family. The postal service just delivered my almost new Crockett & Jones Islay boots and she asks, "How much did those cost?" I replied, "Not as much as you paid for 12" more legroom on a flight to Japan". She comes back with, "That's not the same thing". Yeah, tell me about it. 10 years from now I'll still have these boots while her "premium" economy seat lasted just 21 hours.

People may scoff at the idea of the King wearing repaired clothing. But remember that "throw away fashion" items have only been around for about 30 years. Prior to that, everyone (even royalty) never threw away clothes just cos they were damaged. They had them repaired. The idea of buying a new item just cos it was damaged would have been considered absolutely ridiculous and utterly frivolous.

If you have items that have not been worn or seldom used then yes you are spending too much. If there are substitute items without loss of quality, then yes. If you dont have disposal funds and savings - then yes too much. If you feel guilty or uncomfortable such to ask, then yes too much - but there is a way. Start with inexpensive classics; get use to suits, shoes and dial it up with every purchase - take time and resist a spurge on expensive ID ehancers - they are costly mistakes

Buy quality items and you will not spend more long term than people buying new fast fashion items every year. You may even spend less per year after the initial collection is acquired and you enter the maintenance phase. Furthermore, dressing well may lead to more income and may in fact lead to a net financial gain, not a cost.

Whether we like it or not, human beings are highly judgmental creatures and will definitely form an impression of you based on your attire and your demeanor. For this reason, I would say that spending money on quality, classic clothing is a worthwhile investment in one's self and in one's earning potential in the job market. If clothing is a passion of this young man, and if he knows how to save money, and has few other material indulgences, then I can see no reason why he shouldn't spend his hard-earned money on some quality suits, shoes, and accessories. My only concern would be this: at his age, and in the circles in which he is likely to move, he may be so over-dressed as to be completely out of step with his peer group. -As we all know, part of dressing appropriately is understanding the dress code, be it informal or formal, that exists in every social situation and seeking to be well-dressed without looking out of place.
