“A Chromatic Approach to Jazz Harmony and Melody”
Dave Liebman’s book is an incredible resource. This is how I will use it to get unstuck.
You should think about buying this book…it will really stretch you. It’s on Amazon for around $48.00

I like that "ram it in" approach. I try that frequently.

Dave Liebman was one of the most profound tenor players in the late 80s early 90s. His sound was so good and he would weave in and out of something cohesive to these long ambiguous lines like this one with no real tonal center and it always sounded so good. I would love to hear more players do that as well as he did.

I just found your video series and am starting to go through them one by one. Going to try your 'ram the line in' technique. Also, the "Ted Talk" was very inspirational! Great points and thanks for that boost. I am one of those folks - decades long player - with little learned theory along the way, playing fits and starts, but just rededicated myself a few years ago and finished an online one-year course in it because I felt so inadequate in that area. Glad I did, it built some confidence, but until I did that, for years I suffered from the 'less than' syndrome much as you spoke of. If you teach students, they are lucky to have you ! Thanks for what you are doing here.

Then. I’m told books aren’t the only way; after collecting a whole library of books 📖 😮🎶🎵🎷

I love this even though I’m not stuck yet. I am so new to jazz language, I feel like I have a million miles to go…..and I’m trying to forget I’m older so my time to be able to play is shorter than most. Speaking of “cramming in” I want to cram in as much learning and playing as I can in my years left to roam this earth. Your videos are real and refreshing. If I were in your state, I would enroll in your classes because I think you are a fantastic teacher. Oh, and Dave Liebman IS amazing. I will definitely buy his book! 😊

Great video and playing! Love the approach and eager to do a little pitch/set class analysis to figure out what makes that line so interesting. I've never been into filed reeds myself :)

Denis DiBlasio! When I heard the name, my ears perked up. I went to school with Denis. He was a great player then too!

Excellent. Why does this line work everywhere

Extremely strong internal structure so while note per note it could be dissonant, the wide intervals make it sound in

So, are you saying that, no matter what key you're playing in (key of the song), you are inserting these lines in their original pitches regardless of key? Very cool if so.

Yes. Because of their tonal ambiguity they work in multiple harmonic scenarios. Some uses are better than others though. But, whenever you use one of these lines it will stretch your ear and stretch the harmony

@@geralddeloach1391 I've always considered myself an "inside" player, so this will be great for me.
