Logic defaults to a balance knob for panning on stereo tracks but this might not be what you need. The balance knob can kill the signal coming from the opposite site. For stereo tracks there are better options like "stereo pan". Stereo pan allows you to include both left and right information in your panning decisions. This will still maintain stereo width while you pan instruments in the Left to Right spectrum. Have you tried binaural pan yet? It's a really cool feature for placing instrument in a 3 dimensional space, perfect sound design and film scoring.

Never knew this and I have used Logic for years…guess I should have read the manual.

You’re in good company. I’ve been using Logic since 08 and I learned about it just before I made the video 😂. I’ve made it through about 25% of the manual. It’s a tough read but worth it.

Is there a difference if your using USB, Midi and loop? Thanks for the response
@SojournerTracks

MIDI can capture a physical keyboard as digital audio that you can then manipulate. USB also captures MIDI but often the synthesis is actually taking place in your computer and the keyboard is used as a controller. Loops are just prerecorded audio segments.

If you double click the knob when you put it in binaural panning it gives you way more options and it is really rad

Your video did a great job of explaining the single stereo track. Most of the videos only addressed splitting the stereo track into two mono tracks. Your insight was invaluable!

Thank you for the lesson. Learning about panning and binaural pan is another tool I needed to have in my production toolbox. Very helpful.

This only applies to actual stereo tracks. If you record in dual mono you won’t notice a difference. But it’s still great info to have. I always record dual mono because I want 8 record buttons for 8 tracks.

When you are using the strero pan with electric keyboards do I need to use two different tracks meaning one for left and one for right so they want be as hot or should i used one stereo track and leave in stereo position?
@SojournerTracks
@SojournerTracks Жыл бұрын
If you are capturing a stereo signal from physical keyboard (not usb or MIDI), then you will need a left and right input, meaning 2 tracks. In this case you could just keep them as separate mono tracks but I would combine them into a single stereo track and then use the stereo pan.

I guess for binaural pan when you move the knob such that signal is coming from back of your head, the algorithm flips the right and the left channel. This is what I observed on listening carefully. Let me know your thoughts.

I haven’t tested it myself but it makes sense to me. To my understanding all the binaural feature is really doing is cohesive adjustments to level, panning and eq. It’s all psychoacoustic trickery but it sounds pretty close, to my ears. I’ve been using the feature pretty heavily on my latest project.

Similar things are achievable natively in Logic but the panipulator does it quickly and it’s free!

@@SojournerTracks Anything special in Pan knob plug-in? There are 2 pan plugins available on the Boz site.

The “pan knob” isn’t very different from what you already have in Logic, seems unnecessary to me but “panipulator” is great for doing more critical listening things: switching in and out of mono, swapping left and right channels etc. It’s a completely different tool.
