Located on Vancouver Island, Nanaimo is a beautiful community with areas you must avoid if you plan to move here. If you know what to watch out for, the industrial heritage of coal mining, the timber and paper industry, and densely populated neighbourhoods can be avoided. Before buying a home, make sure you know about the location of the HARMAC Pulp Mill, abandoned coal mines, and over-densified neighbourhoods in Nanaimo, BC.

I've lived here for the last 14 years and have heard that the Harmac smell is nowhere near as bad as it once was decades ago. You might mention the stench of the city dump too which can be over powering in Cedar depending on the wind direction

When you're at Harmac, it's noticeable. But not a factor in the City of Nanaimo. I left the city dump out as there are so few residential areas, and every town has a dump. I appreciate you contributing to the conversation and taking the time to watch, Len.

😢😢 I grewup in Port Alberni, not that was stinky and through the tidal wave. Just retired back from Vancouver to Naniamo now. My G.G.Grandfather Captain James Douglas Warren came from P.E.I. in 1858,he opened up the Trade Routes around Vancouver Island to the Haida Gwaii. He was one of the last owner of the SSBEAVER, it sunk at Prospect Point in 1888. Most of this found out during lockdown, just heard story's before,it was left by my dad.

The smell is in Nanaimo also. The smell has been greatly reduced. Incorrect to single out one community .

Lived here since 2003. Beautiful scenery. Mild traffic issues but compared to bigger cities no problem. Divide between north and south Nanaimo income wise. Harewood once blighted is now becoming expensive housing wise. Downtown, lots of authentic electic shops, our harbor front world class. Biggest issues drug addiction and homelessness Downtown. If this state keeps up unfortunately a good portion of Downtown will be boarded up. Citizens are getting fed up with the crime and the addiction. Below 1 % vacancy, very sizable homelessness addiction population on the street. Quite town especially the winter months has turned violent. We all are awaiting solutions for what we pay high property taxes for. Feel sorry for people that have small business Downtown or work down there. The criminal courts system and Nanaimo city council needs to shape up and come up with solutions. Downtown Nanaimo and surrounding neighborhoods quality of life going south from the drug and housing crisis

This is an interesting channel, but lacks up to date information. For example I live in south nanaimo close to Cedar. In the last few years Harmac has installed mitigating equipment to minimize the "stink" of the pulp. It has been effective and I haven't noticed any strong odours coming from the mill in the last few years. So I would check with Harmac and get the info on what they've done. Acrtually the latest complaint by some residents of Cedar has been the stink of Cannabis coming from the grow farms down there.
@Nanaimore
@Nanaimore Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately people who visit still notice an odour. You are correct that they’ve completed massive improvements to Harmac that have decreased the smell significantly. However it still persists. I grew up near Skookumchuck Pulp Mill and can identify that smell being raised near a similar facility. People can judge for themselves when they come to this amazing city and Cedar. Thanks for commenting and watching!

Funny thing is, I’m downtown all day, taking pictures and videos of places and it’s nothing but tourists and happy senior citizens. Enjoy a good walk. I would say stay away from downtown late at night though.

My parents have lived across from Harmac for almost 20 years. No odors from Harmac but some from the recycling company.... The smell from Harmac diminished after emission laws changed.

I’d agree with that. I was raised in the Kootenay’s near many pulp mills and HARMAC is much less offensive.

@@janwatt5 it’s funny. I was just on the phone with someone from protection island who says they can smell Harmac from time to time. Also mentioned a low vibration hum that has been experienced by people there and on Gabriola Island. I think everyone has there own opinion and can’t be convinced otherwise.

We are from Toronto GTA visiting Nanaimo now, we bought groceries at Walmart, superstore and other local stores, everything is more expensive than Ontario. There are extra tax for juice bottles, meat, chicken… really?! In Ontario we do not pay tax for these items.

Good point about parking with all the suites. Crazy these smart city planners never thought about this. And it continues
@Nanaimore

They seem to be doing better in 2022 and 2023. Only allowing parking on one side of the road, making owners add parking to their front yard, and limiting the total amount of homes with suites. But there's still a lot of room for improvement. Thanks for watching and commenting, Kris 👍

Great video. I subscribed. We are thinking of buying a place in Nanaimo. It’s not cheap but my wife loves it. What do you think of this area Highview Terr, Nanaimo? How is the lifestyle, shopping, restaurants, Costco, movie theaters etc. North Nanaimo I hear is very nice with ocean views but it’s too expensive from what I understand.

this message may get pulled from being rather negative, but I'm say it anyway, ovoid the downtown core its starting to look like a jail now, with all the metal fences being put up to keep the street drug addict's from claiming areas as their own and trashing them...

So many people come here after reading negative comments and find that downtown is alright. These people come from cities with real problems and discover that most opinions are overblown or fallacies. I just had a young couple last week that nearly didn't come because of the trolls on REDDIT. They learned a valuable lesson about not trusting introverts. I appreciate you watching and commenting, and I agree that downtown needs some work. But its so much better here then on the mainland.
