in arena's that use hockey and basketball a lot they cover the ice with this thick plastic like material and then put the basketball court on, to protect the wood of the court its assembled on blocks of 2x4's

Impressive! The quality is great as well! I'm glad KZfaq allows this kind of quality now.

@jedimasterjack NHL arenas have freezing equipment permanently embedded in the concrete floor. This video shows a temporary freezing surface suitable for figure skating, but not really hockey. Shared hockey/basketball arenas usually put a layer of insulated padding over the ice, then install the basketball floor on top of that. They only melt the ice once or twice a year, unless there's a major problem.

Great video, its good to see how they change the floor from hockey to basketball, now i know how its done even though in most cases the arena crew leave the ice down and put something over the ice then the basketball floor.

I paused at the very beginning. Looked like figure skating, with the lights shining down on them. The coolest video on youtube, other than "American West - True HD"
@SacTownSharksFan14 жыл бұрын
They only use ice at Arco for Disney on Ice/Figure Sating events, which is only about 6-7 days of the year. They make the ice from scratch before each of those events and scrape it up when it's over.

10s-25s - They let the lampies on the ice? Whoa... and by my count they did it in about an hour and a half. Good work!

@germxv Power Balance Pavilion, formerly Arco Arena, is shaped like an octagon, unlike modern arenas which are oval shaped. I don't know if that has anything to do with the way the ice is laid out, but in oval arenas the ice and basketball court has to be laid out in the same direction because of the shape of the building.

this video is great i always wonder how they change the arena floor and now i know thanks for the video (tlapse).
@simpsonsj4 жыл бұрын
Interesting....I had read somewhere that the Arco Arena was unusual in that the layout of the ice rink was perpendicular to that of the basketball court...and this video seems to prove that (we don't see an actual hockey rink but I assume it would be the same).

Arco Arena isnt an NHL Arena. It is a basketball arena, that can convert for concerts and Ice Shows. It is more cost efficient to Set up Ice for the 5-7 Days out of the year that they hold these type of events.
@niksinthe91613 жыл бұрын
Major flaw in arco arena's design. this is truly a basketball arena. Arco was never built for any type of ice event such as hokey. Cuz the stage is in the wrong place it should be long ways not on the side talking about the stage. Though this is still even with all the drama about being outdated ONE OF THE BEST places in the world to see a basketball game. No Arena in sports gets you closer to the court then arco Great vid. RIP Arco!!!!

Most arenas use the zamboni to "scrape" the ice rather than shovel it.

@jedimasterjack This isn't for the NHL, in all NHL arenas the ice is kept in for the season and is covered with a rubber mats before the next events floor is piece together. Pumping the water out after every game would be incredibly wasteful and time consuming. That would be done when an arena only uses the ice for a specific event once or twice a year i.e figure skating, which is what I believe this ice was for.
@Fanik107 жыл бұрын
Bet that was the only major league arena to do the change over east/west,, north/south.

some places like cover the ice with some time of thing and then put the basketball floor over that that way seems way easyer

@jedimasterjack Modern Arenas don't remove the ice. They lay the basketball court on top of it.

The only time ice is laid out at Sleep Train Arena (formerly Arco Arena) is for Disney on Ice or figure skating events. Sacramento doesn't have a professional hockey team.

No wonder why Sacramento, CA needs a new arena. Arco Arena may be a "historic venue" in today's NBA, but it's no "basketball to hockey" arena.

@pheablemind12 жыл бұрын
Actually, they never take the ice off. that would be ridiculous. It's hard to tell b/c of the time lapse, but they just put insulation over it and then lay the wooden boards for the basketball court over that.
@nevermind15346 жыл бұрын
Kevin Huff they did take the ice away in this video, but that's because it was set up for a one time event that required ice. Notice that the ice wasn't painted, there were no boards, penalty box, etc. Definitely not an NHL-NBA conversion.

@davezanko90515 жыл бұрын
The appear to be taking up the floor cover that was under the ice. As others have noted, unlike an arena that also has an NHL (or minor league) hockey team, the ice isn't left down all year at arenas like this. And in some cases they don't even have permanent embedded refrigeration equipment to make ice, which may have been the case with ARCO/Sleep Train Arena, so that could actually be the pipes to cool the floor as well.
