***TIMESTAMPS BELOW***
In this video, I finalize my comparison series of the Arendal 1723 S THX tower speakers but this time against some Revel Performa3 F208s, Dynaudio Evoke 30s, and JTR Noesis 215RTs.
*REW MEASUREMENT NOTE*
I mentioned in the video that the measurements in REW are of the song and not frequency sweeps which has caused some confusion, sorry about that!

First off, great video. You put a huge amount of work into it and it was very insightful. However, for those who's ears are untrained, the louder speakers are going to sound "better". I would've level matched the speakers. Again, excellent comparison. I enjoyed watching.

Thanks, appreciate you checking it out. Yes, looking back I do wish I would have considered doing a level matching comparison as well but it is something that I will consider in the future if I get another chance of doing something similar.

I am a Revel f208 guy myself but Arendals did sound really nice. I admit that Revel speakers are very placement sensitive. It took me at least a month to get the right positioning but for music I usually turn off the subs and really enjoy the sound of just the towers in stereo or reference mode. I do have to add that they are in my home theater and the room is treated. Great video, looking forward to more like this.

Appreciate you checking it out and that is one thing I learned as well from doing these tests is that positioning and the room can make a difference but glad to hear that you were able to find a good spot for your Revels!

I was considering the Arendal S series as well, but went with Revel F 206's. I like them, but wish I'd had a chance to audition the Arendals. I can't help but think "what if". Oh well. I'm still happy with what I have and they sound great.

I would strongly argue that the Danley Sound Labs SM96 or SM80F also would be a strong player in this space. They can be custom finished or veneered when purchased to be every bit as pretty as the speakers in this video but for a far lower price and a far better speaker. EDIT: The DSL SM80F and the SM96 probably don't beat out some of these in price... I didn't realize how inexpensive the Arendal speakers are. Way to go Arendal!

I hadn't heard of Danley Sound Labs but after looking them up I can see what you mean. Although as you noted the pricing of the Arendals is still something to consider.

😂 you’re right! I did an image search for the 30 but must have picked the 50 by mistake. The one that was tested was the 30 for sure though. I’ll try to at least update the thumbnail. Good eye!

Why is there such a severe house curve being applied to the DSP? This caused each speaker to basically sound identical in the recording because we were basically just listening to the room. We lose 10db just from 400hz-1khz and then lose another 37db from 1khz-20khz. The JTR should've spanked the other three speakers significantly because of it's very well designed horn with the coaxial compression driver that covers from roughly 350/375/400hz-20khz and yet it sounded the worst. This is directly because of the house curve that's been applied to each speaker.
@RandomDistractionsYT

Actually there is no DSP, this is the pure sound from the speakers in that room. As I mentioned in the video if I didn't believe that a room could cause noticeable changes in the sound these measurements and experience definitely changed my mind on that. It certainly surprised me.
@MyFatherLoves

In all my experience in pro-audio, home theater, and hifi, I've never seen a nearly 50db drop in amplitude in a speaker's FR simply from acoustic treatment or a lack of acoustic treatment (don't know what the room was like for the recording). Even in a studio environment which is usually even further treated than you're average professional listening room, I've never seen such a huge drop in amplitude. Also, each speaker has nearly the same drop in amplitude across the all four speakers. If no Dirac, Audyssey, or manual PEQ was done, then there has to have been something off with the microphone being used or something. I'm certainly not trying to be argumentative and I'm 100% not calling you a liar. But there is something that's severely skewed in the measurements and the recording. With a nearly 50db drop in amplitude from 400hz-20hkz, there's something wrong if DSP wasn't used. The variation you see in small room acoustics with speakers is always in the 400-700hz range, down to 0hz. It's not from 700hz-20khz, besides your normal slap echo or lingering energy from having bare walls affecting your FR, not your amplitude. Maybe the mic didn't have a calibration? iPhone and similar device recordings can look like the FRs you displayed and we listened to. Either way, my point is the same. Whatever recording we listened to and the FRs you showed us, we're primarily hearing the room and not the speakers themselves. It's indicative subjectively by hearing nearly no variation between the speakers above 1khz as well as the slight reverb in your living room and is objectively shown in the FRs.@@RandomDistractionsYT

@@MyFatherLoves No worries, I appreciate the comments. Something to keep in mind and sometimes is missed when viewing the video is that I mention that the measurements are from the song. To further clarify they are the peak measurements from the RTA function of REW for the song that I play in the recording. Somebody else had a similar comment on one of the previous videos but then realized that they weren't frequency sweeps. In that comment I mentioned that if I do have a chance to do something similar that I may try to add frequency sweeps as well. If that isn't what you are referring to, I'll walk through some of the process. I do use a calibrated microphone it's the Dayton Audio UMM6 and as I said I use the RTA function in REW while the song is playing and save the peak measurements. I originally thought that going this route would provide more of a real-life experience with the speakers as opposed to frequency sweeps but again should have probably tried to do that too. In the case for this one we were in the living room and I set the microphone in the main listening position and used my Peachtree Carina, which probably has a sound signature but didn't have any DSP applied to it. We then went to his home theater room and I put the microphone in the main listening position and did the same as in the living room. If you would like to see his room, I do have a card in the video that points to Hatoraid Cowboy's tour of Rusteze home theater to take a look at the room itself. Hopefully that clarifies it and I will go ahead and update the description to add the note about the REW measurement as well as the pinned comment to hopefully avoid further confusion.

Ignoring the obvious problems with these youtube demos, i expect the JTR to sound the worst , its has a very narrow dispersion which doesn’t sound that good in normal sized rooms.

Okay, this is the way they sound to me, subjectively. So, with the F208's, where's the bass? They are a bit brighter than the 1723's and have less bass extension. This confirms my belief that Revel primarily designs the F208's to be used in a home theater environment with subs and therefore just rolls off the bass quite a bit under about 60 Hz or so. Same thing with the Evoke 30's -- a bit brighter and less bass extension. The Noesis sound quite nice; they seem to have nice bass definition, but less extension than the 1723's. For someone who does a significant amount of two channel music listening, I'd get the 1723's.

Revel f208 has great bass and doesn’t need a sub unless its for home theater or modal issues, don’t base your opinion on useless KZfaq demos.

@@Azzy_MazzyI don’t know. I used two subs highpassed at 60hz with my Revel 228be. I felt like they lack a lot of bass on their own. If they are say only 24” from the front wall they might be ok. I personally did not enjoy the 228be without subs. But subs done right makes all speakers better.

I have yet to hear a horn that is equal to or better than beryllium tweeter or even HQ ribbon, for higher frequencies. Horn has its pros, but its not for me.

I had the Revel 228be and JBL 4367 in the same room (I owned both at the same time) and I can assure you the JBL’s highs smoke the Revels. By themselves the revels are fine but next to the JBL they sound splashy and lacked separation. On the revel you could hear the high hat hit but on the JBL you could hear the ride fizzle out which was lost on the revel. One might think it is frequency response but the JBL is actually more rolled off. The compression driver is silly light, does not need to move much and has a massive magnet on it. It all just works out to a lot of control.
