When she starts hitting those high notes I get chills. Every.single.time. One of the few singers that do that for me! Aretha was a gift to music.

They do not call her The Queen Of Soul" for nothing! How many singers have you heard that can sing like that! I have heard many singers that I enjoy listening to but Aretha absolutely blows my mind every time. So sad that she is gone, but we can still listen to her great music.

Beautiful. NO one could bend those notes the Aretha could. I love all the little subtleties in there. Like when she was singing "I say a little prayer for you"... notice how often she would just sing "I say a little" and then she would stop singing and let only the backup vocalists finish the line... "... prayer for you". Then Aretha comes back in between with "oh, yes I do." Difficult to explain in type but such a subtle thing that would add another flavor to the song. Also, notice how they often switch roles, like shortly after that the other vocalists sing "forever" then Aretha comes back with "and ever" like she is temporary the backup. Super, .. who thinks up this stuff? These little subtleties ... who says, "I will just stop singing right here"? and then pick it back up again? So much stuff goes into a lot of these songs. Someday the world will rediscover this music, listen to every little subtlety of it and realize how truly great this was.

Well u have to understand that it was Aretha who was THE FIRST. She IS THE 1ST to star doing RUNS. Then few others followed like Karen Clark Sheard and Luther Vandross. But before them it was Aretha. She astounded the world with her vocal abilities that NO ONE had EVER did before her.

This appearance, which was a Tom Jones Special, was just vocally superior to any other performance she has ever done. She also did Call Me which is her best vocal performance ever in my opinion. She also performed The Party Is Over and a medley with Tom Jones.

And that is live, nothing prerecorded. and her singing and expression was just anomaly. I've seen a concert on youtube where they were throwing roses at her, but they did with such and amount that a presenter stepped in between songs and asked them to stop it. It was in amsterdam. I think it's still up on youtube.

You should review Aretha and Dionne sharing the song together on Solid Gold-an 80’s show that Dionne hosted weekly. She and Aretha where label mates at Arista Records where Clive Davis was president. It's pretty hard to top an original when an artist covers it but if your name is Aretha Franklin ... it's effortless. I love Dionne's version as well, but Aretha takes this song to another level. Most people don't even know that "Respect", her signature song, is an Otis Redding cover, but even he acknowledged that her cover far surpassed his original recording. She just had that talent to take a song and make it her own, definitively. I love her cover of "Spanish Harlem" over Ben E. King's as well.
